Cyberpunk absolutely fails to capture the sheer pathetic nature of it all. I've never seen or read anything that could be considered cyberpunk that didn't make it look cool and somewhat fun and exciting

Well, that seems to be your personal opinion because perhaps, cyberpunk looks more aesthetic and wild than our lame and ugly world. The truth is we are living in the first stages of a cyberpunk world without those aesthetics.
