What are the best books about obsession?

I'm looking for literature that has to do with obsession; Sméagol from Lord of the Rings is the perfect example, but I am not a fan of J. R. R. Tolkien.

Taking the above into consideration, which literature would you recommend?

All maximalist literature includes obsessive characters because all maximalist literature is produced by obsessive writers and consumed by obsessive readers.

The Monk, Frankenstein and The Phantom of the Opera. Ambrosio, Victor and Eric are obsessed: women, death/life, women again...

Lolita
Actually read it, it's all about his severe psychosis and obsession with delores.

Nice post, do agree.

The Collector - John Fowles

The 26 Enticements, The 4 Delights, The 6 Punishments.

It's written by Carlos Garcia Lopez, and it's an attempt of reconstructing the life of an early 19th century painter/mystic initiated in a cult of Cybele, whom after having a series of visions of the goddess decided to start a series of works painted with his own blood. He eventually succumbed from some sort of infection/blood loss.

Half the main cast is obsessive

Hubert Selby, Jr., The Demon.

The protagonist moves through a series of obsessions. (There is no supernatural element to the story, the title notwithstanding.)

Excellent book. Selby certainly understood the subject.

Addiction and depression are both forms of obsession you dullard, and they're the core of the novel

Naomi by Tanizaki it's 10/10
