There was something called Sakoku, the period between the 17th and 19th centuries, when Japan was completely isolate from the world. I’d argue you’re both correct. Shintoism is definitely at their core and gives them a great sense of natural wonder and sense of place as humans in the world (humans aren’t the center of the universe), while Zen defines their focus on impermanence and minimalism.
