Aw, thanks user :) It's such a unique and dense book of concepts that it's hard to explain just what's so great about it. Calvino himself has an astounding way with words, and just the physical descriptions of every city in all their detail - in the span of usually one or two pages - is enough to make all fifty-five cities feel diverse and yet connected by some several themes. Then, there's the driving idea behind each city. In a comment from Calvino about the book, he revealed that many of these cities were written over several years as a journal of abstract ideas he would have at certain moments or as a result of certain events. Eventually, he put them into a concrete form, and the result is a stunning collection of parallels between those two themes of abstractness and concreteness, and how they work in tandem as a commentary on the trends and tendencies of cities in the modern age.
