Why do you call them public schools when "the public" is precisely who they are not for? I never understood that.

Because they were originally schools Tht allowed students in regardless of religious affiliation, occupation or place of origin and were overseen by boards of governors from the same ‘public’. In addition most such schools began to provide for the education of ‘poor scholars’ in a locality as an act of charity and were not run as ‘private’ schools for the profit of the proprietors.

I’m not bragging. I won’t get in for a start. I just have seen threads here over the years of people mythologising the place and the exam and wondered what people thought of the institution and the manner in which it seeks to test for ‘excellence’.
