Holy.... I want more!

I was in a classics mood recently and opened up my used copies of Beowulf and Chaucer only to find that they were both ruined by high schooler tier commentary. I must have first bought them when I still thought old annotations were cute...

A high school lit teacher used to give me extra books to read because I was one of the few actually interested. At one point he gave me Benioff's City of Thieves so we could talk about how film / movies changed novel writer's priorities. I remember the margin notes were totally asinine questions (like: "which of the protags do you identify with? Why?") and he asked me what I thought of the book before class started one day, when the classroom was like 90% full. I told him it was a fine novel, but the notes in the margins were stupid and distracting.

He stared at me for a minute, blinking, before saying, "user. . . it's my book. Who do you think wrote those notes?" Feel kind of bad about it now because his notes were obviously his frustrated and frustrating attempts at brainstorming discussion topics for a class that didn't care about literature.

I feel very intelligent now

You shouldn't, these were all written by teenagers.

I doubt they grew up to be any more intelligent

>Get a second hand copy of a difficult book.
>There is one single line highlighted (the most vapid and accessible one to focus on) in the first couple of pages after which there are none

>buy a used copy of candide
>every other sentence is underlined and has "heh" written next to it

STOP TRIGGERING ME, BIGOT

It's horrible. I'm sitting here watching a formula, drinking for the first time in a week and sobbing! This is the climax of the movie- the eschatological culmination of the comedy- which represents generically most movies today. I have missed all the build-up, the cheesy romantic crap, the gratuitous social conflict, and have come into it at the climax. I have inadvertently idealised the romance, the conflict, the resolution, so that now I am weeping over this climax- but it is a denouementish climax. The conflict had already been resolved, the end remains to be seen- It is more like the eye of a hurricane than anything else. This is a style that Hollywood has added as the classical comedy. I am fucking weeping! - All value judgment suspended partly by the whisky, - partly by the suspended moment.
Oh, now comes the denouement, and I might as well stop watching- Makes me sick. Ach. Oh. At least it was short (13m30sec.) The movie is "Playing from the Heart."

That's the rest. I don't think the Sherlock fanfiction was his, the handwriting looks different.
