>The first stage of the economy’s domination of social life brought about an evident degradation of being into having— human fulfillment was no longer equated with what one was, but with what one possessed. The present stage, in which social life has become completely dominated by the accumulated productions of the economy, is bringing about a general shift from having to appearing— all “having” must now derive its immediate prestige and its ultimate purpose from appearances. At the same time all individual reality has become social, in the sense that it is shaped by social forces and is directly dependent on them. Individual reality is allowed to appear only if it is not actually real.

These are really poor suggestions.

This is pretty good.

Sapiens is a books with its own issues but does argue that over time we've gotten stupider. For the Brawndo brand shit I guess No Logo. I must cogitate on non-fiction for a bit, some K Mart realism would fit the bill, but I guess Book of Dave is very similar in a few ways.

couldn't tell you but I've read the thread equivalent

I don't know... but I get the feeling that people used to find for instance titles (what one is) more important, at least in my country. Parents had for instance respect for teachers, trusting them before trusting their children whereas the opposite is now true. People didn't second guess their doctors with advice they found on google etc. People still seem to think it's important to have a title, but it doesn't come with automatic respect and admiration.

Any kind of blind faith in people probably isn't all that healthy, so I'm not gonna say things where better. But I'd rather have people aspire to be doctors than blinged out gangsta rappers.

The lack of discretion social media puts one at risk of, assures that it's a nightmare of dissembling and evasion: The show never stops, the stage has no boundaries, and private conversation prolonged and searching enough to develop thoughts worth committing to print, fails to ensue.

Honestly it's the same book I thought of. One of the stupidest possible futures imaginable, with 'pop culture' monoliths guiding everyone's behavior.

You lack the protagonist that recognizes how stupid everything, but past that....
