Late-capitalism is garish. The hyper-engagement with its matrices saturates the senses. It creates a disconnect between individuals and their own daily actions. If you live a life integrated enough into late-capitalist institutions, you probably feel like you're floating aimlessly from one distraction to another, in a timeless loop, consuming decontextualized regurgitated culture, always waiting for "something" (anything) to happen.
It's more severe than the simple worker-product alienation of Marx. People identify more with the middle class lives of the people they see on their screens than their own situation, which they always perceive as somehow temporary.
