It is important, it just has no place being taught in university classrooms. They should serve to endow students with skills applicable to their desired field of work. Poetry is a leisurely activity. If anything, college dorm rooms should come stocked with a diverse anthology of classical poets.
don't know whether first post best post or worst post.
It is important. But only to the upper class and poets themselves. The rest can have football and brewskis and macdonals.
What universities do you people go to that the majority or even a notable amount of students are liberal arts students and not kinesiology volleyball bio major tomboys and chad's and wannabe chad first generation immigrant guys, packs of fashionable yet still strikingly anonymous gooks getting a vanity degree in something that doesn't require linguistic abilities, and boomer Africans/paki/Indian immigrants hoping an engineering degree will buy them a new home in the suburbs with an ensuite for four generations of ancestors?
I understand epic poems like Beowulf or The Iliad, that's different. But just poems and all that is such a waste of time.
Just a big public university in my state. Of course most people study meme degrees and the Chads study business and the incels study STEM stuff, but some, like me, are studying English.
And in my English major they're making me study poetry and I have never felt like my time was being wasted more
Every artist worth a damn reads poetry. Avoid it if you're a philistine/pleb/bugman/cucksumerist.
Imagine believing this.
What can be gained from poetry? Give me one good reason I should read it
I study English literature in Mexico.
Euphony
Like I said, it's only relevant if you're an artist. Avoid it otherwise. All the great writers, film directors, painters have read poetry. If you don't plan to become a great artist just don't do it.
That's what music is for
Is Mexican university good?
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
>"No"
Music is just delanguaged poetry
Yeah, pretty good so far. It's actually the best in the country (UNAM).
t. jelous cunt
Jealous that I don't go to a Mexican university? Holy shit, the delusion.
You have it backwards. University is exactly the place for poetry (and history and literature and philosophy). Work skills should be taught at vocational schools.
Life's pretty good. I don't have to deal with the nonsense described here: Nor getting myself into eternal debt (or any kind of debt for that matter) like Americans. Also I'm in the best uni in my country: en.wikipedia.org
Poetry is interesting but a lot of so-called poets have no idea what they're doing. The past 50 years have seen a complete over saturation of poetry and apart from a few exceptions (transtromer, for example), it's a field that encourages naval-gazing and mystifying bullshit. It's a very easy way for dumb and uninteresting people to pretend as though they're just beyond your comprehension.
The real issue is that free-form and other modernist and post-modernist poetry require a knowledge of the canon to understand how and why they deviate or subvert from pre-existing norms. A lot of the best poetry came out of the early 20th century. But nowadays nobody is taught that unless they opt for a dwindling handful of colleges or private schools that still teach by the classical model. So as a result, modernist poetry is no longer an end point but a starting point for young poets. So they just think poetry is some vague bullshit about expressing yourself in the most cryptic way possible, and they get to call this "art" to put it beyond obvious criticism.
The internet has also had a deleterious effect on poetry, because even if you know what you're doing with the form that doesn't mean you have anything worthwhile to say. And while the internet brought a destruction of the monoculture, the way it silos people into subcultures and echo chambers has just produced thousands of people with identical aesthetic sensibilities, with audiences incapable of any form of judgement beyond identification. It's similar to how comedy has moved from laughter to clapping - at that point it's something that looks like comedy, and imitates its form and structure, but isn't comedy. Judgement is bracketed out and replaced with agreement.
Honestly the lowest soundcloud rap is better poetry then what is being produced by art school students. At least rappers have to account for cadence and the melodic quality of language, which by intuition alone is closer to actual poetry than Rupi Kaur and her imitators.
becuase professors are sodomites and poetrry is for faggoqueers like shakespeare and dantey

Poetry is suppose to be learnt and memorised during nursery to enlighten the soul and fill your spirit with happiness and memories of old times.
Its taught at university as a joke, rubbing the lost wisdom in your face as you struggle to point to America on a map
your female parent is a whatever you said
no the point of ppetry is to impress whamen with how sentisive your are
America is a shit country. The social climate is riddled with shitstorms and muh culture rants. The individual wants to surmount the highest peak yet his culture wants to be dragged along. Technology has made echo chambers of social platforms, and personalities have degraded into expression-per-cue occurrences. Finer points of humanity have been eroded by said shitstorms, and the level of crime, muh racism, obesity, and shoddy workmanship have left the few men worth their weight in gold trying to keep shit clear of their family members’ eyes and ears. Universities should be more strict and serve first to instill sold work ethic, then to endow students with skills. Poetry comes only after a student has become a self-sufficient member of a working and intellegent society. Otherwise, we get flooded with retard trophy wife moms and their stupid little soccer teens buying Rupi books and lauding her while they watch Opera act amazed as part of a sales op. The retardation currently present in this country has permeated every crevice of the arts and sciences. The only ones who are safe are the sober-minded men who adhere steadfastly to their hard-fought values and diligence. They are the ones who produce work worth gold, yet it is ultimately corked in a bottle and set afloat on a rolling sea of belligerent fuckwits. This is precisely what the beginnings of shithole country looks like
Why do undergrads pretend that poetry isn't important?
Good post. It seems that culture is slowly deteriorating interior to the university system, and that the hopes for a brighter future lie outside it. These soundcloud rappers aren't the best artists available today, but at least they put a modicum of effort into their craft.
Because it isn't
Because your betters know that a Chinaman's bugman existence consisting only of SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING all the time is unworth living. t. math grad
...
Why pretend that anything is important?
Let's look at a room, full of shit, you name it. Books, poetry, opinions, feelings, news, history, and an electric sign that says raw money made, not play money, but real shit, like liquid work, and a man beating a gaggle of disabled children, old people, and work shy people to death.
What in this room matters?
That's right, only that sign that explains the raw volume of liquid work that is being produced. That's all that matters, if it doesn't make that real liquid work, no play pretend shit, but real money, then fuck it.
If you're not making more liquid work by empowering your mind with that poetry, then even his man beating children to death is a more valuable member of society. He was the most valuable thing in that room, but even still, I'm sure those other books help people be more productive, or at least have a greater potential to do so than poetry.
I'll be honest, it seems likepoetry is something used to hypnotize simple minded people like children and colored people. If your doing that hypnosis style poetry, that's quality, but otherwise you're just being a degenerate, like gay heroin, accomplishes nothing and likely reduces your productivity because you're all covered with flowery feelings and emotions and shit, and thoughts, rather than the feeling of raw work, feeling like a champion, swinging that hammer, sweating, knowing you did something instead of just thinking your doing something, regardless of the fact the that thing you are doing is literally just thinking. Pointless thinking.
I like work.
You like work.
Don't shirk work.
Don't smirk work.
Don't hurt work.
Work work work.
I like work.
You like work.
We like work.
We are work.
Life is work.
Work work work.
Good is work.
Bad is shirk.
God is work.
Ham is shirk.
Or Another, i'll try again, I'm a real poet
Work is sex, it's just making kids
Doing my deeds, so I can call them my dids
My hand penis makes hand children
My beast penis makes beast children
Labor makes children, in women and men
We wake up tomorrow, and do it again!
This, mine maybe not perfect, but things like this, work songs, are real poetry.
Gay post
americans get student loan debt because theyre actually retarded with their finances. illegal immigrants in the country with half a brain get free rides and so much extra for shit like food that they actually make a few thousand dollars from repurposed grant money once theyre out of uni. really makes you wonder if those illegals deserve it more than actual americans for being smarter
I guess the sole intention of poetry is to make women wet. It is a tool for facilitating reproduction (the old in and out). I don't know if that works anymore, though.
It can also represent the identity of a group, kinda like a framework of reality to face the world around you. But I guess that necessity is not satisfied with poetry anymore, but with another forms of art.
this
how about you try to say that in less words and with less obscenity, gaywad?
Universities are obsolete and filled with faggots larping as scholars. Anyone who sits down and says I will write a poem, or I will write an X of any other kind, is gay, where gay means useless self-important twittering. Any good writing comes from having something to say, and poetry comes from saying it quickly and with carefully chosen words.
I've never felt more sighted.
Americans have student loan debt because universities are now country clubs are charge admission accordingly.
I've always felt poetry was something personal from the heart and trying to recreate it and give rules to it defeats the purpose.
In that sense I completely agree with the movie Dead Poet's Society where Robin William's character makes them rip out the pages of the text book. As long as you're writing from your heart what's inside you and have something to say then your poetry is good in that it serves its purpose.
Trying to have classes on it in a school where most people don't care is stupid.
gay
turbogay
Because contemporary institutionalized poetics is about sex, and sex sales.
>Universities are obsolete and filled with faggots larping as scholars
That is because they have been turned into vocational schools
Aristophanes and Socrates were right, institutionalized education is impossible. The university is a library that scholars gather around, well, the library is online, the scholars are online, and the university is full of sodomites browbeating each other with the consensus that they're collectively doing something useful.
There's no other way to get people to care about contemporary poetry, which is, however, one of the career paths they imagine for themselves
Why do universities pretend that they are important?
Tons of people care about kkb, Trapt, The Mgmt, Joy Division, etc. No one likes sentimental whaargarbl from pseuds who think iambic pentameter makes sense in English.
Holy fuck lmao
youre so illiterate you think contemporary poets write in iambic pentameter, this is embarrassing please stop
All modern poetry is without exception meaningless bourgeoise sentimentalism. There is no value of it beyond evoking the most petty of emotions. Even then, music does it better. In the year 2019, there is no reason to read or write modern poetry other than egotistical masturbation
I can agree with the sentiment. I value ideas more than prose. It's a question of whether you care about the plating of a meal or just want to eat something delicious. Poetry is nice, but certainly not important, and should be the last thing ever taught in a school. You can't make someone appreciate poetry by having them write essays on poem fragments from a textbook. It's no wonder most of the populace despises it.
And yes, I do personally read poetry. I've done several collections this year and written some of my own. But, it's very pretty puddle-shallow garbage, ultimately. The novel is the superior medium.
Look at the song Kids by The Mgmt, it expresses the truth about being a boy raised by a single mom in a subtle enough way that it was acceptable in a decade of extreme feminism.
This
As soon as universities stopped being about learning for learning's sake and for being a better person as a result and more about getting you in, out, and in the workforce, they became a meme
Aesthetic satisfaction
why don't you kys nigger faggot?
Poetry is aesthetic story telling.
It has a place along with the rest of the arts.
This whole thread confuses me. Its upsetting to see so many people on a "literature" board being so dismissive of poetry.
Im not going to sit here and ramble about why poetry is important or comment on the university system, but I think that you should all reconsider your negative stances against poems. If you are on this board, it is because you read (or claim to), if you read then you are seeking to learn (or be entertained), and poetry has a lot to teach (or things to imagine!)
You dont have to love poetry, but to be so dismissive of it as a waste of time seems to me to be the mark of someone who does not truly understand the potential merits of it. Its as absurd as saying that fiction doesnt matter because it isnt real, or that non-fiction isnt relevant because of writers inherent bias.I strongly urge everyone to sample a wide spread of poetry until you find someone who resonates with you because at the end of the day the greatest gift poetry can give you is the sense that someone else feels the same as you do, or conversely the ability to understand an entirely different/unique point of view.
>some faggot thinking his mexican university is good
>people dismissing poetry as pointless
>"there are no good modern poets"
>"Poetry is aesthetic story telling"
>"Universities are obsolete and filled with faggots larping as scholars"
Congratulations, Yea Forums, I will be leaving now.
Great post.
I would say that the last nail in the coffin was the 60s counterculture and the Beats. The Beats knew what they were doing, but their imitators took the freedoms of prose poetry from Ginsberg (who took it from Rimbaud, Baudelaire, and Whitman) and just went feral. The conflict between the artistic traditions of poetry and the rising innovators who want to expand what poetry can be was won by a flood of retards who simply concluded that modernism was victorious over the naive constraints of past traditions and cultural heritage.
>Honestly the lowest soundcloud rap is better poetry then what is being produced by art school students. At least rappers have to account for cadence and the melodic quality of language, which by intuition alone is closer to actual poetry than Rupi Kaur and her imitators.
This is a keen observation. Contemporary popular poets and poetry (as seen in poetry slams, instapoets, and creative writing classes) exist in environments where evolutionary pressures don't challenge the artist to create aesthetically or technically innovative work. Instead, what survives in those environments is what conforms to social norms, and what successfully spreads or shares itself (which usually involves emotional provocation - anger and amusement cause people to share things on social media) - i.e. they are places where rank attention seeking, narcissism, and sociopathy reign supreme.
All trash. None of them say anything interesting because they are all politically correct. The song Kids by The Mgmt isn't really a prose poem, but talking about its rhyme scheme sounds silly compared to its subversive and important content.
Look at the song
One of the reasons Germans abolished poetry from their education in 19th century was that they realized that poetry cannot be taught and 99% depends on person’s innate talent unlike other subjects where you can make significant progress without talent.
Poetry doesn't make any sense to me. When I attempt to read it I am incapable of understanding it. It feels like I'm reading unintelligible nonsense. This applies equally to modern and older poetry, and the only exception is when a poem is very straightforward with what it is attempting to express.
the purpose is to say something so important it can only be said in coded language, by this definition, you will never be shown poetry by an institution.
This is such a common reaction to poetry on Yea Forums...
What you should try to understand is that all language can be understood as a kind of poetry (a sort of coded/ordered arrangement of language), and formalised poetry was the original information technology of humankind - things like rhyme and meter were extremely significant to the geographic and temporal transfer of information, of morality, of law, of cultural consciousness/influence...
A lot of people don't understand that poetry was and still is (such as in advertising, and memes, and political speech, and religious worship) extremely utilitarian. Its framing as a now-irrelevant tradition of 18th-20th century print culture is one of the great mind tricks that has been played on people. You probably hear and see poetic devices every single day, and you are touched by it emotionally, and you understand it perfectly well in its context. Of course you are going to find it difficult to fully engage with the poems of the past, which were culturally relevant in ways that seem antiquated, and were preoccupied with recording and aesthetisizing and sharing internal states of human life. There were no search engines, internet, or social media back then to electromechanically record your mind's wanderings - people did it with ink and words.
> all language is poetry
how egalitarian of you
I defy this thread to name a 20th century poem more important than Kids by The Mgmt
Because it is important, depending on how you decide to see it. This boards real cynical lately, I wonder why that is.
