Why are there no renown American playwrights?
Why are there no renown American playwrights?
David Mamet was hugely popular, he won a pulitzer, 'mamet speak' was a thing. He shot himself in the foot when he turned into a conservative but he was big.
Hamelton is loved the world round
plays were and are too aristocratic for americans to into
>who is Tennessee Williams
Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, etc.
Sage for obvious reasons
yet New York is a theater capital
Was going to suggest that same as well. Come on now OP.
Why is there no sub-saharan african literature of great value?
Have to have invented writing to make literature.
They're barely even human. Their descendants' works are praised out of proportion in America. Like a proud father putting his kid's shitty doodles on the fridge.
Things Fall Apart is pretty good
Neil Simon was pretty well renown.
>Tennessee Williams
Literally who?
what is your definition of value?
Gonna recommend Neil Labute
Theater was huge in America, the expression “will it play in peoria” comes from theater.
Edward Albee, Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, Woody Allen
Everyone needs to read this guy's plays, especially Buried Child and True West (his script for Paris, Texas is haunting too). Brilliant man - had a problem with the drink but that's expected.
Also no one mentioned: Tony Kuschner or August Wilson or Wendy Wasserstein or Neil Simon (to a much lesser extent) or Tracy Letts. Try harder.
>artist wins fame and gets money when young and becomes conservative later in life once his personal fortune is secured
I don't know Mamet user, but the sketch you've given describes nothing else than
BASED
AND
REDPILLED.
Long story short, American theater is all about economics, failed relationships, advertising (especially self-advertising and people people who are tired of it), drunk actors, ex-football jocks, aging war heroes, Southern hothouse atmosphere.
I wanted to mention Richard Yates as a playwright but it looks like he wasn't.
