How the hell do I get through Leviathan. I want to read it for the purpose of gaining a basic understanding of Hobbes enough so I am not a blithering idiot in discussion, but the 17th Century text is so hard for my tiny brain to understand. Any suggestions? I’ve only gotten to page 90 and I decided to reread it as I was almost clueless with some of the grammatical and syntactical differences when I began reading.
How the hell do I get through Leviathan...
>im dumb boohoo
you already failed.
Mass literacy was a mistake.
Just read Schmitt. All the good bits of Hobbes plus more updated for modernity.
you do not have to read hobbes
Also, you bought penguin. Buy literally anything other than penguin.
Hobbes isn't very hard, just concentrate. If you're really desperate then you could read this, Hobbes' De Cive, a kind-of first draft of leviathan written in Latin, which is translated into modern English. It has practically the exact same core argument as Leviathan (but doesn't include some of Hobbes' first section of leviathan on human nature, which is actually pretty important to understanding the broader claims). That said, you'll miss out on all the memorable quotes from leviathan.
Ignore this retard (but do read Schmitt)
You should have started with Calvin.
I tried reading the Prince and I had the same problems. The did has like 7 commas in every sentence I get completely lost in what he's trying to say.
I’ll check him out.
It is not hard, just annoying and it ruins the fun. It feels more like a chore when I need to decypher this sentence which has a semicolon with no independent clauses, French syntax, and wordes spellt like thisse.
