I don't like Jeff Bezos.

the abiity to retain information from an e-ink screen is literally 0, you're wasting your time using e-readers.

That's for LCD, not e-ink. E-ink is the same as paper because the flickering does not exist. The flickering is what erases memories and why TV and internet use are horrible!

I like reading on my phone/paperwhite. The dictionary feature is comfy and some books just aren't meant to be carried around in physical form.(400+ pages)

They're fucking shit and I wish e-book threads were banned on Yea Forums. I bought a fucking oasis and still ended up just going back to the library because non-physical books are a fucking scam.

why

Is this because we are conditioned to quickly consume media on screens and forget about it?

They are pretty good (at least kindles are) but I still tend to stick to physical paperbacks even though they're hard to come by where I'm from.

i have a paperwhite and it's great
no eye strain, free books, light and comfortable, and i can read in the dark

you should eat a raw vegan diet, read from actual paper books and get a mating partner from africa

I used to hate them (muh traditional paper feel), but then I got one (paperwhite) and now I can't stop recommending them to everywhere. They're great.

I bought a kobo and I've probably already saved money by downloading epubs and reading them on it.
It's a really convient way to read pirated ebooks.
Also getting a backlight on an ereader is mandatory unless you are reading outside, you won't be able to read jack shit otherwise and strain your eyes.

E-Ink is the same as reading a regular physical book.

Not related to OP but by enormous chance does anyone has an Epub or .pdf of the book "The Killing Star" by Charles R. Pellegrino and George Zebrowski? I've had no luck in finding it but I believe in miracles

i could only find audiobook

So did I
Thanks for giving it a try, always so disappointing to see some book who's not available in eformats

I have a kindle but I'll probably give it to someone and buy a Kobo because I don't want ads or apps or reccs or internet on it. the Kobo system is more stripped back.

the obvious advantage is saving space. i have probably around 400 books, i've moved twice and it fucking BLOWS to move them back and forth, up stairs, etc. its great to have a couple thousand books in your pocket with a great screen, battery life, and backup light.

the disadvantage is the almost total loss of the tactile dimension of reading. remembering what i read is assisted by where the passage was physically on the page and the time spent underlining it or whatever. its not that big of a deal bc e-ink is a huge step up from phone screens but a paperback is ideal for me.

the best set up would be a couple hundred physical copies of your essential reads and a Kobo for everything else. i love the pragmatic minimalist approach of only owning an e-reader but i'm really attached to my book collection.

definitely worth the >$100 bucks

>the best set up would be a couple hundred physical copies of your essential reads and a Kobo for everything else.
THIS

e ink displays emit no bluelight and you're literally looking at ink, same as on paper it applies positive or negative charges to make the ink sink or float, more comfy to read on paper but for the first read of any book do it on a kindle then if it's good and you'll probably re read it then buy a physical copy, if you read a lot they save you a lot of money since you can get books for free

If you're a retard this might be true.

e ink displays still has an a screen brightness which affects eyes too as far as I know? so it's not totally a book equivalent.

Heresy. Sacrilege. Demonic.

no it doesn't

if the backlight isnt on(my kindle doesn't even have a backlight) there is literally zero brightness.

you can turn it off completely so yes they are so long as you don't use the backlight

you do need backlight most of the time tho. Too dark to read comfortably otherwise.

no it isn't, it's got the same response to light as ink on paper does, you'd only need the backlight in places where you'd also need light to read a book

no you don't

because it's basically ink on paper

that's why they sell them without backlights

because you don't need one

because its ink on paper

mine doesn't have a backlight. its fine.

go to BestBuy and hold one with your own faggot hands and look at it with your own faggot eyes

>buying proprietary shit
Should've got a got a good Sony E-reader if you're a richfag or a Kubo if you're a poorfag. Anything that doesn't let you load it up with any .epub and .pdf you can find on the internet is always gonna be trash.

>the disadvantage is the almost total loss of the tactile dimension of reading. remembering what i read is assisted by where the passage was physically on the page and the time spent underlining it or whatever
when i read something on ereader that i definitely want to retain i highlight it
kindle let's you export the highlights so after reading i'll go through them and make anki cards to make sure i won't forget

I do both due to certain conveniences of each. Like if im going somewhere in the city or something that doesn't have access to a a comfy place with coffee ill usually bring my physical book.

But when i'm home i usually read PDF versions of books that i cant find in amazon stores.

Recently i've been going to goodwill and buying 25 cent random books and reading them and learning completely random things. Its nice and i could do this forever, guys.

Imagine not hoarding a shelf of physical books so you look like a pseud when people come over, ebooks suck.

got an tolino shine 2hd, which is a german brand (newest models are shine 2hd for price, shine 3hd for some features you dont need, vision 4hd for waterproof and epos for bigg screen) used for 45€ which is nice.
got one because books became too expensive and on the first day i already pirated (harhar) 60 books which is also nice
now i can go outside with my backpacl without being scared of books getting damaged and it also takes way less space
only had 3 out of 10 pdfs which didnt appear on the ereader. epubs work fine

wow anki, thats a very good idea

this the set up im going for as books are pricey and my kindle is great

>people come over
huh?

E readers use a front-light that reflects off the surface of the display rather than a back light that blasts directly into your eyes. It's essentially just like reading from paper with a lamp.

they have side mounted leds, which can be completely turned off why are you spreading misinfo? I own the product and know how e ink works so I know you're wrong here's a video explaining e ink displays

you can use the backlight or you can use it without any artificial light

Expalins why I retain less of what I've read when watching shows/browsing 4channel afterwards.

I bought the new Paperwhite for that sweet 32 gigs of storage
only thing i don't like is that it doesn't have warm lighting, but i only use it on the lowest brightness setting anyways so it's not that big of a deal

wait does reading on a computer/phone actually decrease retention? someone please answer

no, it's a meme

>when people come over
I keep seeing this argument being made on here and I don't understand how it could even be thought of having any weight on 4channel. The people visiting this site usually don't have a lot of visitors.

No it's not.

any sources?

Anecdotal but yes, when I read from physical books I can remember much better

This is me.

I used to think it was garbage until I used one.

I can download all the books I want, the screen is great, and I carry it everywhere.

i torrent the physical books im reading because i prefer the backlight on my kindle when im reading at night

moderately based and redpilled

For the first 3-4 books I have read on reader this might have been true, but after I got used to it, I can safely say that there's no difference for me between ebooks and normal books.
I even tested it a bit because during uni iI have read a bunch of compulsory books on ereader and when we did plot test about it I always scored perfect or high.
Sure, maybe nit the best method to test it, but I feel if you don't let yourself get distracted and get familiar with an ereader, you can retain as much as you could from a normal book.

Not him, but the feeling is kind of different with a physical book. It is a physical object so you tend to appreciate it more even though its sole purpose is just information storage.

I got a Kindle Paperwhite recently, it's pretty good. I would have probably got another e-reader if I lived in America since I don't like the botnet but I can't really complain so far.

Which model do you own?

wouldn't read at all were it not for my kindle

no way am i giving my money to the paper jew when i can download virtually any book i want for free

you are disabled

E-books are nice. They're ideal if you travel and move a lot. Moving a large library really is a pain in the ass. Having a backlight for reading in the dark is very practical as well. It also saved me a lot of money. I still appreciate physical books, nothing can really replace that new book smell and the rustling of paper, but e-books are just a lot more pratical in a lot of situations.
