There are many better novels than Crime and Punishment, user. You might just be in the entry-tier phase where you think any decent book you read is the greatest of all time because you have a very narrow field of reference.

The Brothers Karamazov

>There are many better novels than Crime and Punishment, user.

Name one.

Anything I name you will call shit, and I'm not in the mood to defend my literary tastes right now. Just read more and eventually you will see that your high school reading requirements are nothing compared to the great works of literature out there.

well, for a start, Дocтoeвcкий's Пpecтyплeнie и нaкaзaнie is infinitely better than garnett's crime and punishment

>Just read more

I might if somebody would recommend better novels to read next. Usually people like to recommend their favourite books, no idea why you have to be so asshole about it:

>teheheh I know so many better novels but I am not gonna tell about them tehehe

Harry Potter

Finnegans Wake

Try Pale Fire by Nabokov. If you want people to arbitrarily throw out books that are “better” than c and p then there’s one that I enjoyed “more” than c and p

tell us your tastes and people here can give great recommendations, the problem is people like you come here from plebdit and say
>i just read crime and punishment now tell me your secret big boy books
even if you read one more dostyo like notes and then said which one you preferred people would have something to base a recommendation on

I'm almost 200 pages in and I feel like I know where the story is going and I have no interest if it is just going to be another mediocre ending where Doestoevsky tells me to just deal with reality again and not be a sperg. Should I continue?

Well my other favourites are Berlin Alexanderplatz and Sun Also Rises

Envy by Yury Olesha

i don't really like hemmingway but based on
>Berlin Alexanderplatz
you could go down the james joyce route or if you want to stay with german literature gunter grass.
good starting points for those two would be dubliners and the tin drum respectively

You couldn't name a single novel?

Yes...YES

You beat me to it.

I think the Grand Inquisitor story pushes it over the top as Dostoevsky's best work.

>not in the mood to defend my literary tastes right now but I will attack you and call you a high-schooler for yours
brilliant

he kinda is but he's also kinda right, you're clearly just baiting for a pointless argument completely devoid of any goodwill that you're trying to engage in. Pic related is my entry, OP is pretty fuckin good though

Pathetic manlet, either play the game or shut up.

yikes

The single book that convinced me to never read anything from Dostoevsky ever again.

I can name off some that I prefer more, you’re welcome to disagree.

Danielewski, House of Leaves
Camus, The Plague
Steinbeck, East of Eden
Nabokov, Lolita
McCarthy, Blood Meridian (DEFINITELY not for everyone)

I'm also just starting to get into serious literature and would appreciate your 'recommendations'.

Is it really bad? I read c&p and heard that karamazov is even better than that. So was quite excited to read it. Your comment has been a wet blanket on my

Story is a disguise for philosophy. You need some life experience to appreciate it, come back when you're older maybe.
I've fucked up in ways similar to rodion (ambition etc) so I could relate.

he's gonna tell you to read the bible

I just got tired of the unrealistic emotional grandiloquence. I had been looking forward to it for years too but got disappointed. Crime and punishment was alright. Karamazov was just too much. Other Russian authors are still alright.

Pale fire is a poem though so it's not really comparable, or am I missing something here? I realize this might be an opinion thing

pearls before swine

you forgot to change
>Дocтoeвcкiй
try harder next time, faggot

Reminder that Dostoevsky was a Tatar, don't read his books or you'll convert to Turkic islam.

TBK is severely overrated. For the last time, you don't need god to be moral. Dosto seems to think everyone would be an absolute sociopath if not for the concept of an all seeing authority threatening them with punishment if they do bad things. Ivan (the strawman atheist) has a crisis because he acts out virtues even though he rejects god, as if people suddenly become monsters as soon as they deconvert. Absolute shit-wit theist tier trash

empathy is not morals, brainlet.

none of u murimutts will never understand Фёдop's words. fuck you

empathy + reason = morals

if anything, superstition gets in the way

unironically this

Ivan is a better character than literally any other character written by atheists.

Faust, Moby Dick, Glass Bead Game, Magic Mountain, Lolita

>Camus, The Plague
>McCarthy, Blood Meridian
Not OP but c'mon bruh

Dostoevsky, Fyodor. Dislike him. A cheap sensationalist, clumsy and vulgar. A prophet, a claptrap journalist and a slapdash comedian. Some of his scenes are extraordinarily amusing. Nobody takes his reactionary journalism seriously.
The Double. His best work, though an obvious and shameless imitation of Gogol's "Nose."
The Brothers Karamazov. Dislike it intensely.
Crime and Punishment. Dislike it intensely. Ghastly rigmarole.

This is where I realized you were a retard

t. Speedreader or never read any of his books

The three things he bashes over and over in his books are Turks, Jews, and Poles. Quite the pro-Yea Forums combination I must say

The grand inquisitor story is a meme. Ivan’s chat with you know who at the end of the book is superior

Based. Vonnegut does not get enough love on here.

Yeah it's better but The Grand Inquisitor is still pretty fuckin good.

Not even Dostoevsky’s best

I like it but The Brothers Karamazov and Demons are better

Pale Fire is a novel with a poem called “Pale Fire” in it

>BTFO 4 posts into the thread
How did he do it?

In Youth is Pleasure
Hell yeah Demons, that was my joint right there.

I literally can't. it's the best novel ever written.

If you’re a fan of Russian literature and Berlin Alexanderplatz then consider reading Petersburg by Andrei Bely. One of the best works of Modernist literature out there, and although it’s not really underrated, it’s not talked about anywhere near as often as it should be.

Thanks friend. I have read the poem and then assumed that the commentary after the poem was written by an actual person trying to desipher it. I feel stupid now. I have to go back and read it asap of it's really that good. I did enjoy the poem.

It’s a shame you didn’t finish it at the time, I bet it would have been an interesting experience reading the rest of it thinking it was real. In any case it’s a phenomenal book and you should definitely read it all.

Read the melancholy of resistance of krasznahorkai, thanks me later

Did not include many English novels, because I don't generally read English novels.

Hunger, though it is pretty much the same except for the murder and multiple characters
