>Monthly Reading for August: Babel-17 by Samuel R. Delany
FUCK MORE THAN 2 POVs FUCK GRIMDARK and FUCK FEMALE PROTAGONISTS
Jace King
I'm reading Cugel saga through the dying earth, are a lot of Jack Vance's stories written like this? It's fun, but unusual.
Asher Powell
You had one job nigger
Lincoln Morris
The pacing on this is fucking glacial, I'm exactly halfway through but I've read 200 page books that managed to cover more plot by their midpoint. It's alright but I wonder if it got hyped for the length
Also it's pretty fucking derivative, so far we've already done prison, a ringwraith chase and a journey through a haunted old castle.
On a scale of 1 to 10 how much do you rank the SJWness?
Parker Green
Yeah, Cugel and Rhialto the Marvellous are pretty random. It's all about the prose and dry humor, the plot is almost secondary. Good stuff though.
Ian Price
there's two main women in it so far and they're both competent, also there's a background plot where gypsies are probably being put in concentration camps and that's presented as bad so maybe you guys won't like that.
Landon Bennett
>What are you currently reading that isn't webtrash? The monthly reading of course!
Lame. None of these are inherently bad and can be written well.
Gabriel Hill
More than 2 povs (excluding interludes or single use ones) has a pretty low success rate from what I've read
Charles Hall
I would say all Vance's works are like that, and even those of almost all classic SFF writers. They were forced by the market to write that way, which is why i have a hard time enjoying old authors.
Wyatt Ross
I know. I did it to teach thread cunt a lesson about punctuality. Or maybe I'm phone posting and got too lazy to remove all those >
Multiple POVs are only used to pad out the wordcount. Any good story from 1 POV can be told in 60.000-80.000 words. But try to find a publisher who would sell fantasy novels this short...
Elijah Brooks
>Forced by the market Nah that's just how based Vance wrote. He pretty much redefined the market.
Josiah Scott
I don't think there's something necessarily wrong with a book that doesn't cover a lot of plot. I think Titus Groan is the classic example of a fantasy story with almost no uniting plotline, but it works because it instead spends its time developing its world and characters and bouncing them off each other in sequence. It's built like a spiderweb, with a lot of interconnected small interactions instead of one grand design, and that's still compelling because there's a fundamental coherency to the structure. If a story sucks it's not because there isn't enough in the plot, it's because it's written poorly.
Landon Ramirez
I love it when POV changes include the same lines of dialogue.
Julian Howard
>Ron Paul in Sydney This sure is fiction alright
Carson Morgan
It really was the market though. The average author had to write one novel and a handful of stories each year, otherwise he would fail to build (or keep) an audience. In such an environment, plot and structure are secondary, and your novel is nothing but a series of random encounters that pile up until they fill 200 pages.
Dylan Fisher
Do not change POV in the same fucking scene. Looking at you Dan Brown...
Kevin Long
Retards shouldn't be allowed on the internet.
Matthew Nelson
I hope you're not mistaking third-person POV for first-person.
Hudson Roberts
Read it. It's pretty good. Only slightly Sci-Fi though, without spoilering it.
The Sirens of Titans had an interesting spin on it. Same person but different POV due to memory-washing
Brody Carter
Even 3rd-person POV should stay inside just one characters head, it gets really annoying when it starts bouncing around everyones thoughts in one scene.
Thomas Howard
Oh fuck, disregard the last reply. For some reason I thought POV was switching character perspective in the story.
Josiah Peterson
>reading chris wooding
Nolan Martin
Seethe
Joseph Lopez
Thoughts on The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant?
Parker Gomez
Yeah but this isn't Titus Groan, it's a pure action book the author just spends way too long on each action sequence.
Like them going through this castle thing takes 3 days in story but one of them is only relevant as the characters wasting time, has 2 instances of character revelation/development and about 3 mini setpieces and it takes fucking forever to go through.
Just looking quickly at the book it spans from chapters 32 to 45 which is 125 pages of the book version for something a decent author would cover in maybe 40-50 pages.
It's either underedited or deliberately being kept long to be marketed as an epic fantasy lol
Jayden Ortiz
It's good and pays off amazingly but I can't guarantee you'll make it that far. You need to know that the protagonist is an utter malcontent going in and accept that or you won't make it through
Reading Islands in the Net. Wasn't expecting a story from the pov of someone cool with the corps taking over the world.
Jaxon Harris
Yes. They are more successful or less, but once you've caught the Vance voice -- a wry mannered wink, maybe -- you'll see it in much of his work. It's playful. Lyonesse is great because it's fairy tale more than high fantasy. Planet of Adventure was fun due to tone and a series of setups and payoffs more than any depth or plot. Araminta Station the same but elevated due to the delightful addition of its passive-aggressive sub-race, the Yips.
I think Yea Forums probably has the highest concentration of potential Vance fans you're going to find. I'm saying this to comment on him rather than on Yea Forums, if that makes sense. But tldr if you like Cugel you're likely to find something to enjoy in his other works.
Blake Phillips
It's superbly rich and superbly derivative at the same time. Like someone who tried to do a knockoff and was too creative. I read it when I was young and still remember many scenes and settings from the first two Chronicles. The Sunbane, Saltheart Foamfollower, the Bloodguard, Nom. Maybe it's just good '70's grit.
Recommend you power through the first one. From there decide. The unique elements grow through the series rather than being lazied out as is usually the case. If, having read the first you want more of that you'll get it. If you don't then safely drop.
Is it good? Good to know. Bumping Lyonesse up on my to-read list. I'll add that Cugel fans would probably like Prince of Fools. Say what you will about Mark Lawrence or grimderp or whatever, the protagonists are basically a carbon copy of Cugel teamed up with your typical s&s barbarian. Good banter and bad situations made worse by his own cowardly decisions. Obviously not on Vance's level, but few are. >OMG carnelian light lol God, that book was a chore. The cringey rape element was unironically the best part of the plot.
Lincoln Lewis
Girl Next Door Ripening
Levi Anderson
Why do serious people think science fiction is the lowest form of writing?
Colton Howard
because any enjoyment of anything is beneath them
Colton Walker
Because they're retards. They don't even know most scientists grew up reading science fiction; even the "low brow" sci-fi of someone like Edgar Rice Burroughs. Here's Carl Sagan himself praising Burroughs' Mars series.
Is it because Science is a newer phenomenon and it will need more time to produce a Shakespeare or something? I've always wondered this.
Oliver Stewart
people are stoopid
Eli Hall
Because it is. It's still enjoyable, but it is to literature what video games are to art
Andrew Martin
because they are pretentious subhumans
Sebastian Kelly
I gave The Wandering Inn a go. I can't believe you people played me like that
Wyatt Kelly
Why bother?! That's a trash list.
Jason White
I'm at the end of book 3 and can't stop.
Chase King
Some do it to shill. Some do it to troll. No one does it because it's worthwhile.
Joseph Scott
I heard it has gender fluids in it which makes me glad I dropped red rising when they starting singing as a form of protest
Sebastian Sanchez
Webnovels are for people too dumb and uninterested in pirating anything actually good.
Webnovels are like Runescape.
Dominic Jackson
honestly, I'm not sure why I'm so reticent to it. My writing isn't much different. I just get this kneejerk reaction when I read it.
Carson Diaz
>My writing isn't much different. Better set up a patreon and copy them then and rake in that sweet, sweet, cash.
Samuel Davis
Yeah the writer of wandering inn is at 8.8k$/month now.
Josiah Fisher
eh, programming pays better. I'd prefer to be published
Benjamin Bennett
should i read the wasp factory next or begin the codex alera series?
Nathan Green
they've got a lot of intelligence, wisdom, and experience you don't understand. instead of reading science fiction which is contrary to basic observable universal principles they read xianxia to live in accord with dao
>I'd prefer to be published Being published in the SFF genre doesn't even get you that much unless you're in the top 1 percent of authors. As a newly published author you'd be lucky to make even a quarter of that.
Ethan Campbell
Telegram chat?
Brody Cox
>Is it good? Interesting enough, it starts a bit slow but then stuff really happens. Depends on how it ends though.
Joseph James
> programming pays better Not for most programmers.
Chase Wood
Save yourself from codex alera and read something fun.
Jayden Carter
>Wasp Factory It's like Watership Down 2: Electric Boogaloo
Jack Allen
alrighty ill go with codex alera . thanks user!
Robert Evans
Eye of the World any good?
Robert Miller
lotr clone
Asher Ortiz
Series doesn't really start and get good until book 2.
James Nguyen
I haven't read either so that won't bother me
Luke Jenkins
Saying this as one of the few people around here that doesn't outright hate the series, do you really want to read a 14 book series? At least 6 of which are trash and even the good ones are sloggy. It was a decent series to grow up with but wouldn't recommend it to anyone these days.
You should have stayed on the retard train until MC gets cucked by his rival.
Gabriel Morris
I have read enough of The Methods of Rationality to not only know it's shit but also entertain thoughts of suicide.
Jace Miller
Let's just say I had just taken a cursory glance at its cover, does that qualify?
Camden Adams
What is it about anyway? Is it just like one of those youtube videos picking some movie, series or book apart?
Wyatt Richardson
I think it's Harry Potter rewritten with Harry being as autistic as the fans.
Jack Ramirez
imagine the snarkiest, most psuedo intellectual redditor and insert that personality into harry for the first book (I think it's just the first one, I gave up very early)
Levi Lee
It's a piece of Harry Potter fanfiction wherein Petunia marries and scientist and Harry is raised as some polymath Ubermensch. It does try to pick apart the "magic system" of the books but does so in a way that will have you pacing around the room inbetween paragraphs while the second-hand embarrassment dissipates.
Fuck, it's written like a script as well? Why would anyone subject themselves to such a thing?
Colton Gonzalez
No, I pulled this off tvtropes because it is indicative of the work. The actual fic is regular, serviceable prose, even if the author does have an annoying propensity for em dashes.
Jaxson Ross
>Readning anything but non-fiction
Gavin Carter
Oh, that's a slight relief then. Still autistic as fuck. I'm also amused given how often I hear "rational" atheists insist scientists always accept evidence at the expense of their theories, but there he's insisting something that just happened is impossible.
Aiden Cook
But gormenghast is shit. Your opinion has been discarded.
Hudson Williams
Harry also rejects the notion that what she did was magic, a poorly defined concept, and states she must be a god, a different, just as poorly defined concept.
Justin Scott
It's shit and the author repeating phrases ad nauseam made me want to kill something.
David Nelson
What was it, "Leper, outcast, unclean!"
Gabriel Robinson
Okay fags, I just noticed that I forgot to cancel my Audible subscription and can still get 6 audio books for """free"""" Recc me some good fantasy that is available on Audible pls
Ayden Russell
The science in the book is correct, and anyone who says otherwise keeps failing to provide a counter-example. This is a huge misinterpretation of the passage. He clearly was shaken by his world-view being shattered and the book highlights the very human incredulity. Later, he is frustrated at her explanation by "magic" rather than the event itself.
Joshua Wright
wrong thread bud
Andrew Bennett
Reading Wheel of Time, I am at book 5. Really I don't think the series is great, many characters are annoying and unrealistic and the chosen one story also isn't great. But at least it's easy to read, good after a day at work.
Carson Thompson
Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy (Stephen Fry narrated one) Tigana Lies of Locke Lamora
Robert Hill
Don't read past 6, 2-6 is where the series peaks, it's mostly downhill from there. It starts picking up around 11 but then Sanderhack takes over and it goes to shit all over again
Is malazan any good? I've heard conflicting things about it. I don't want to read it if it's just some random guys OC universe for his D&D campaign.
Logan Martinez
You can read them in any order really. Left Hand of Darkness, Word for World is Forest and Dispossessed are loosely (very loosely) related.
Blake Gomez
i wouldnt say they are trash, if you like world building and characters they're fine but the plot definitely drags
Hunter Perez
Human writers are now obsolete. I just tested out an AI story generator. Costs $0.10 per 1,000 words which is about 2 pages. I bought $1 as a test. That's 20 pages. It's a lot more expensive than humans, but it's worth it for the extreme customization and personalization. You always know what you're going to get and you don't have to waste time and on money on trying to find stuff you'll like. To start off, you select from an assortment of tags. For this experiment I chose, "LitRPG, Harem, Sex, Dungeons, Town Building". I was not disappointed! Each 2 page increment allows you to decide what happens next. That way I'm both the writer AND the reader! As a bonus, you're allowed to sell the story you created!
Dominic Roberts
can i read any of these out of order? or do i need to follow a particular path?
Christopher Wilson

I can't wait for perfect VR with a story-telling super AI to weave plots.
Camden Hernandez
Even if you only like 0.001% of books and only had a goal of reading 0.001% of that, that's still far too many for a lifetime.
Luis Ortiz
You still have several decades left to wait.
Isaiah Sanchez
When I was a child I believed that I was born too late. When I was an adolescent I believed that I was born at the right time. As an adult I know that I was born many millennia too early.
Isaiah Gomez
Is this how Arrand releases one book per month?
Logan Price
They're all independent stories, you'll just be missing some background and context if you read them out of order.
Camden Parker
Maybe if you include shitty webnovels
Lincoln Butler
I can't wait for functional cryogenics so I'll actually be alive when perfect VR becomes available.
Thomas Jackson
If you read his books, his MCs for the most part are the same but in different settings, a horny man looking to cum deep in some wet cunny. It's not hard to write when you have your priorities straight.
How was dungeons deposed 3? Did he try to write harem shit again, or did he focus on his story?
James Brooks
But that implies you have the tens of thousands - hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for their services. Are you some bitcoin millionaire?
Daniel Richardson
I just made this up. Certainly could easily exist with current technology though. Maybe it does actually somewhere.
Hunter Murphy
What is it that draws you to scifi and fantasy so much ?
Angel Barnes
I am hoping that I can sell all my organs and limbs and get myself a torso-sized VR submersion pod if I sell all my rights and let them use me as a test subject for experiments.

How is talking about cryogenics, VR and how shitty reality is not perfectly suited for a fantasy and science-fiction general?
Grayson Evans
I don't have to deal with people and their bullshit in reality. I just have to deal with them in fiction. At least in fiction I can drop the drama and walk away anytime without consequences.
Justin Price
It's got some thicc thighs. Is it's purple vag super tight? That looks like it can take a good slamming.
Chase Brooks
Im reading it and Ive no idea whats going on. The prose is allright though.
Sebastian Edwards
The reason Malazan got so big was because when it was released, most books handheld you so tightly that it got annoying. Malazan just drops you in and you figure shit out. If you are a brainlet that can't retain information and need books to handhold you, just drop it.
Wyatt Bennett
Nice

Are you that user that was on the underwater binge?
Fanfics aren't books, and this isn't a fanfiction general. Please see As if liking Harry Potter isn't faggy enough, you brainlets actually discuss the merits of its fanfiction. YIKES! . Kek. You just gave those 2 litrpg fags boners
Big story reveal at the end. Like the last quarter is just big plot plot plot plot
Alexander Rogers
new to sci fi, reading dune for the first time, so far im liking it alot but the protagonist Paul/Muad'dib is someone flat to me, i understand that being a mentat might lead to a less interesting character since theyre more computer like, but thufir hawat and even pitir were mentats with more personality than him. does he ever gain more charisma or charm or are we supposed to appreciate his situation and and how he responds to it?
Jason Adams
>Dwelling beside a body of water is tonic for the weary psyche. Sea smells, sea birds, seawrack, sands - alternately cool, warm, moist and dry - a taste of brine and the presence of the rocking, slopping bluegraygreen spit-flecked waters, has the effect of rinsing the emotions, bathing the outlook, bleaching the conscience.
David Ramirez
Read the first book and find out if you like it.
Charles Diaz
>Ulysses isn't a book
Benjamin Reyes
Do you enjoy fantasy races in your novels user ? Personally I think they're ok as long as the author does something new with them and doesn't just follow the basic tropes for elves live in trees and dwarves inside mountains.
Cameron Cruz
I like what George RR Martin did with dwarfs where they aren't exactly a race like in Tolkien but more along the lines of a genetic birth defect.
Post SHORT examples of your own purple prose you think is good.
Elijah Wright
The party that I would later refer to as the "Barbecue of the Revelation" took place on an ordinary summers night. I can recall the mix of sensations I experienced at the exact instant we all looked up at the sky. The aroma of brisket being pulled from the smoker and the thud of it hitting the wet grass after the self-appointed grillmaster dropped it in shock. The faint whine of mosquitoes mingling with the constant wails of crickets. The feeling of the label on my beer, damp and cool from the sweating bottle, peeling under my tightening grip to reveal smooth glass beneath. The rivulets of the liquid trickling down the back of my throat, ghost of my most recent swig of cold porter. The joints in my neck cracking as I rapidly turned my gaze skyward. The sounds of conversations being aborted and replaced with gasps. Shouts of rapt, horrified wonder at the sight: the appearance of the great, prismatic, pupil-less iris of a cosmic eye, outshining the moon and the stars as it undulated in the blue-black veil of the sky that chased off the last of the sunset.
Chase Sanders

Stop samefagging. No one wants to read your writing. This isn't the critique general.
Jayden Rogers
I like it. I didn't use to, but now I do.
Josiah Diaz
Are there good novels where a female protag gets a monsterboy harem with a lot of romance? asking for a friend
I do as long as there are no dwarves or elves. I prefer stories with one race though, unless having multiple races becomes a larger part of the narrative.
Silo series by Hugh howey maybe? Metro series by Dmitry Glukhovsky if you're up for a more Russian experience. There's also a whole genre dedicated to describing the right before, during and the aftermath of various apocalyptic scenarios (nukilar exchange, viral outbreaks, alien invasion, zombies, etc.) - sadly, most of that is badly written.
holy shit it would be so cool if he actually uses AI generated text for some characters in his book. we would have to wait several years for it to come out though

/sffg/, I just realized that this cool villain I planned out has no personality or emotional complexity to it. I had a villain before who was more complex and despicable but I dropped him because he was a paper-thin political allegory that didn't fit the tone of the story

weakness is a big theme of the story, especially for the main character who's the weakest person in his group. I was considering making the villain someone who takes advantage of people's insecurity and sense of powerlessness and uses it to direct their anger to his purposes. It's only when the MC realizes he's been lied to that he turns against it.
The thing was, it actually worked as political commentary, but it fucked with the tone I wanted for my setting. Maybe I could change that though.
The whole deal with the villains in the setting is there's a handfull of factions at war and the villains of the story are actually the weakest faction, but the most unstable and dangerous. I'm wondering how I can play on this to keep the villain I want and the villain I need
Lincoln Martinez
Imagine having opinions such as that and sharing them without shame or restraint

Oof, sounds like it's a pass then. I don't mind MCs losing but it sounds like he'll be losing to that little twerp Lysander, that's a no for me.

Is there a website similar to novelupdates but for western books, where you can search with more specific tags other than 'fantasy or sci-fi'?
Sebastian Parker
Naw. We only have goodreads which uses readers tags, not official.
Mason Watson
I'm half way through black sun rising. This shit sucks.
Asher Ramirez
Go back to reading sanderson
Jacob Adams
I was actually thinking about that earlier. What a great fucking book, the author nailed internal thoughts real fucking well, not to mention the entire plot revolving around a priest traveling with the fallen top figurehead of his religion who has to perform loopholes in order to help others.
Evan Ortiz
To the user that wanted tower climbing books a few months ago. Try speedrunner by adam something.
Logan Robinson
I actually read that story not long ago. It was okay but didn't lead anywhere exciting enough for me to care about its impending sequel.
Jackson Bailey
What do you do after you've read all the good Fantasy and Sci-fi books? And I do mean all of them.
Aaron Jenkins
read the bad ones
Dylan Perry
Kill yourself, because you are delusional to believe you even scratched the surface.

How new do you think I am? Using reverse psychology for recommendations won't work on me user. We are not all readlets and brainlets in this general.
>can't up with anything I haven't read so he just gives up
Evan Sullivan
It's my favorite fantasy series of all time. So unique and boy does it heighten and prolong the tension until it's unbearable and when it finally comes to a head, there's nothing like it. The Gap Cycle (sci-fi) is somewhat in the same vein and highly recommended. Anyone read The War Within yet? Thoughts? (no spoilers plz)
Why do I feel somebody gets buggered frequently in this novel?
Elijah Barnes
>thinks I will give him recs and let him think his little reverse psychology game worked
Elijah Miller
Just admit you can't think of anything.
Jonathan Jones
/sffg/, I'm struggling to find a way to make my villain interesting. I want to base him on a real person, but the person I want to base him on has such a distinctive personality it's going to be a paper-thin allegory and I want to be a bit more subtle
Noah Bennett
I have a lot, but I don't want to let you feel you've won. Maybe in a few threads you can ask properly and I will give suggestions. Otherwise fug off with your weak mind games.
Jonathan Cooper

No. One. Cares. Come back when you have a book for us to read.
Daniel Jackson
>implying what you'd accept any of the suggestions >implying that you'd actually read any of the suggestions you accept

You can reply to this and have the last word. I'm done giving you (you)s. You probably living a sad existence because it's Saturday night and you are trying to mindgame total strangers on the internet into giving you things so you won't feel so alone and useless.
Sharing an interesting YA book I read recently. Reminded me of a mix of The Giver and Divergent with a fantasy element thrown into the mix. Not the best thing I've ever read but the premise was interesting.
Just dropping the reader into a world is terrible writing. Your reasoning reminds me of justifications for terrible game design (just git gud). Malazan is just bad because it's empty escapism written in a convoluted way. So only brainlets thinking that they're smarter than they are like it. Don't bother with it. Read something worthily reading instead.
>the author nailed internal thoughts real fucking well Its not good at all. The author does way too much of this its done with very little art. It's like a treatise on the characters' insecurities and shortcomings. Every page is full of self doubt and mediocrity that everyone is constantly wallowing in. Its a very cool setting, and it should be an enjoyable adventure, but it feels almost like the author is afraid of having fun. But why?
Kevin Green
how do I make a general grevious-esque god of the dead into an interesting villain?
Cooper Richardson
Give him a background instead of just hurr god of death xd Has he always been the god of death, does he enjoy it, does he get power from it, does he only do it because someone must be the god of death or else something bad happens if not o e picks up
Dylan Gray
Curse my fat fingers and this small cellphone, wanted to delete something and somehow oressed post instead. Anyway you get the idea. I don't mean to make him some comedic relief guy like Terry Pratchett's Death, but give him some motivation, a personality or whatever.
Henry Adams
Coldfire is based. Gerold Tarrant is 100% /ourguy/ Nah homie. Read something besides Malazan. There's good and bad in any genre except for litrpg and chinkshit
For sexy S&S? If you want a story where the author is clearly putting his fetishes on full display without it being TOO degenerate then check out the Bloodsong series by C. Dean Andersson. I've only read the first book, Warrior Witch of Hel, but a good chunk of the story is dedicated to a female character being chained and tortured throughout the entire novel. Also Quorthon from Bathory dedicated a song to the author so that's kinda neat if you're a fan.
There's also the notorious Conan story Xuthal of the Dusk (The Slithering Shadow) that pretty much created the formula of 'half-naked barbarian with half-naked female companion battling Lovecraftian monster' that you see in countless paintings and drawings. What makes it notorious is an S&M scene involving two ladies that Howard included because he desperately wanted Weird Tales to buy the story and maybe even turn that scene into the cover art (which Weird Tales did kek).
Neuromancer if prose and ambience are your thing, Snow Crash if you appreciate satire and eerily accurate predictions of the way the 2000s have turned out thus far.
Oh shit niggaz, for once you are not talking about fantasy.
Simulacron-3 by Daniel Galouye. It was loosely adapted for a movie called 13th Floor (worth a watch). There's also a few YA(ish) novels that are suspiciously similar to Ready Player Gay. One is The Eye of Minds by James Dashner (the writer of the Maze Runner series). The other is Erebos by Ursula Poznanski. Unlike Simulacron-3 I have not read these so your mileage may vary. There's also a boatload of litrpgays based on VR but those are all uniformly horrible and should be avoided.
>Snow Crash if you appreciate satire and eerily accurate predictions of the way the 2000s Nigga wat?
Nicholas Foster
The echo-genomics joke just clicked for me last week. I think I've read color of magic/light fantastic over 20 times during the last 10 years

Don't base it on a person.
Write down a list of objectives. Write down the sum of knowledge, and known/unknown information. Then work on scenario: a run down of plot and THEN work on the character.
Ayden Morales
Shadow is very good. I am enjoying this a lot.
Isaac Long
I bought The Poppy War recently apparently it has rape of nanking levels of brutality. Opium is used for magic and the main character nuked her womb. It's pretty based.
Cameron Sanchez
The sequel came out this year.

Who /horror/ here?
I want some legitimately spooky books that still affect a comfortable atmosphere. Haunted houses and the like.

The synopsys sounds pretty edgy, on top of being pretty formulaic.
Connor Roberts
What's his hackiest moment in ASOIAF? I'm going with the 3500 mountain clansmen that magically appeared to give stannis a boost
Are there any fantasy series that borrow the idea of "a group of poor people, maybe one of whom can do a little bit of magic, decide they don't want to be poor anymore, and sneak into a hole full of terrifying monsters to steal their shit so they don't have to work on the farm" from old school D&D, without being a direct parody of D&D?
Matthew Diaz
Just go for it, user. Trump makes a fine villain.
Gavin Anderson

Basically this but I make an exception for dwarves. Love those motherfuckers
Undying Mercenaries is modern pulp kino. Based McGill creature fucking all the women and killing the alien scum.
Nolan Stewart
What is it about dwarves that you love ? I personally love fey and elves more
Dominic Myers
I do, if they serve some sort of purpose. Tolkien's Elves and Dwarfs were interesting and especially the elves really helped punch home the "days of fading wonder" effect the books have. I'm really sick of fantasy books were elves are just tree-hugging hippies who live a really long time. Tolkien's elves felt fucking ancient, like their age actually mattered. Hell, even the Elvish word for "year" meant 144 years for us.
Evan Nguyen
It's difficult to put into words. Perhaps it's because metalworking is one of my own hobbies, perhaps it's because the only thing they fear is having too much blood in their alcohol stream, but overall It might be because the idea of a bunch of attack midgets living underground, not giving a fuck about anyone else and digging until they unleash some ancient demon, naturally appeals to me.
Ayden Gomez
>the Elvish word for "year" meant 144 years for us. So a two hundred year old elf slut is actually a 28,800 year old slut?
Asher Bell
Nah, more like when she says she's over 2000 years old and ancient she's really just a horny 16 year old.
Kayden Rogers
This. We all know what those degenerate elf sluts really want. Don't give into heresy.
Easton Harris
I want space battles! Any books with good space battles?
Started this today, read the first chapter. The way he writes gives me a bit of a headache, but i am really impressed by the picture he paints considering this was PUBLISHED in 1984. He was probably coming up with the ideas for this in the late 70s based on his early work. Personally, i don't find more modern examples of science fiction (and that isn't counting things like star wars or whatever normies consider) as compelling as reading older works from a modern perspective, especially considering how the Internet changed public perceptions on technology and what is possible. I mean, just imagining the world at the time some of these works are written and the ideas they come up with that we take for granted now really boggles my mind. That's why i liked "We" so much, because even though it was written so long ago, the ideas presented in it seem so tangible and "forward thinking" to me. Long tangent for me to simply say "I'm really looking forward to reading more of this," but i just wanted to share a quick thought I'm having while I take a shit lol.
Are there any "serious" fantasy featuring elvish cock sluts?

The end of Blood World was especially pulp as fuck.

>she's really just a horny 16 year old. Go on...
Isaiah Scott
It's pretty interesting to see the perspective of the time. Like you said, the writing is sometimes difficult to follow. It's the kind of book where if you get distracted and lose your place you need to re-read the whole page.
It somewhat suffers from the (I don't know what to call it) effect where you read genre defining literature, but find it fairly standard because even though it was original at the time, chances are you've been exposed to all the works that were in inspired by it and therefore don't find it very unique.
Matthew Lee
>chances are you've been exposed to all the works that were in inspired by it and therefore don't find it very unique. I've noticed this trend before. A friend of mine couldn't get into LOTR because it didn't feel that special since he'd been reading generic fantasy for 15 years prior. He's also a pleb, to be fair.
Poppy War is literally "what if Mao was a magical girl and WW2 had magic instead of modern technology" it rules
Connor Ortiz
I honestly like the design of that cover. Simple, clean, but not too plain.
Cooper Richardson
It's an alright cover for a normal scifi book but there's been a lot like it of late and it doesn't actually fit the text at all. I browse the new releases every month and there's about 4 different covers now shared between every new scifi book and 3 for every new fantasy book.
John Garcia
>C.J. Cherryh, author of the Foreigner series This insult against Chanur will not stand!
William Watson
If that is indeed a novel about mechs vs.giant monsters then it's the shittiest cover imaginable since no one would assume that's what the book is about based on the cover.
David Kelly
sci-fi literally fucking sucks
Jordan King
then leave this general bugman
Jordan Sullivan
>lotr is so great >it's the best thing ever >lets dress up as fagdorf and precious >pleb friend is brainlet because he don't like shits of the ring kys you piece of shit
Asher Flores
but sci-fi is literally the complete fucking suck
Gabriel Smith
I've never got into any Cherryh but I honestly gave up on foreigner the moment I realised it was gonna be one of those books with generational timeskips. Just wasn't in the mood for it
Caleb Gonzalez
AHHAHAHAHAHHAA good post

/sffg/, can I get an opinion on this ideological contrast between my mc and my villain
>mc is driven by the need to prove himself, even if it means defying his own nature >bbeg takes this a step further by denouncing the notion of objective strength as a pointless platitude. reality is a grand delusion when nobody can perceive the world objectively. Strength and weakness exist only in the eye of the beholder. It is only the perception of strength that matters >in reality, bbeg's intimidating form is just a facade, and his real body is small enough to step on
There is no need to be like that. All I am pointing out is that you make it sound like boring navel gazing. Put more energy into it.

because some people can't even think with words average iq in the world is 87 and it's getting smaller with each passing moment People literally can't enjoy fictional world and the story conceived in it, unless it's easily digested

I actually like it better when it is just orcs and elves and dwarves because usually the other option is they're just elves by a different name or elves where EVERYTHING IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT!1!! in some dumb attempt to subvert tropes or whatever
Evan Peterson
You might also enjoy Star Force. On balance probably not as good, but it has that thing going on where everyone on the same team is not on the same team that brings some spiciness to Undying. But some of the side characters are better, especially Marvin and Hoon. I don't remember exactly but you might need to give it a book or two of breathing room before you can just crunch them down.
