Multiple POVs are only used to pad out the wordcount. Any good story from 1 POV can be told in 60.000-80.000 words.

I don't think there's something necessarily wrong with a book that doesn't cover a lot of plot. I think Titus Groan is the classic example of a fantasy story with almost no uniting plotline, but it works because it instead spends its time developing its world and characters and bouncing them off each other in sequence. It's built like a spiderweb, with a lot of interconnected small interactions instead of one grand design, and that's still compelling because there's a fundamental coherency to the structure. If a story sucks it's not because there isn't enough in the plot, it's because it's written poorly.

I love it when POV changes include the same lines of dialogue.

It really was the market though. The average author had to write one novel and a handful of stories each year, otherwise he would fail to build (or keep) an audience. In such an environment, plot and structure are secondary, and your novel is nothing but a series of random encounters that pile up until they fill 200 pages.

Yeah but this isn't Titus Groan, it's a pure action book the author just spends way too long on each action sequence.

Like them going through this castle thing takes 3 days in story but one of them is only relevant as the characters wasting time, has 2 instances of character revelation/development and about 3 mini setpieces and it takes fucking forever to go through.

Just looking quickly at the book it spans from chapters 32 to 45 which is 125 pages of the book version for something a decent author would cover in maybe 40-50 pages.

It's either underedited or deliberately being kept long to be marketed as an epic fantasy lol

It's good and pays off amazingly but I can't guarantee you'll make it that far.
You need to know that the protagonist is an utter malcontent going in and accept that or you won't make it through

Yes. They are more successful or less, but once you've caught the Vance voice -- a wry mannered wink, maybe -- you'll see it in much of his work. It's playful. Lyonesse is great because it's fairy tale more than high fantasy. Planet of Adventure was fun due to tone and a series of setups and payoffs more than any depth or plot. Araminta Station the same but elevated due to the delightful addition of its passive-aggressive sub-race, the Yips.

I think Yea Forums probably has the highest concentration of potential Vance fans you're going to find. I'm saying this to comment on him rather than on Yea Forums, if that makes sense. But tldr if you like Cugel you're likely to find something to enjoy in his other works.

It's superbly rich and superbly derivative at the same time. Like someone who tried to do a knockoff and was too creative. I read it when I was young and still remember many scenes and settings from the first two Chronicles. The Sunbane, Saltheart Foamfollower, the Bloodguard, Nom. Maybe it's just good '70's grit.

Recommend you power through the first one. From there decide. The unique elements grow through the series rather than being lazied out as is usually the case. If, having read the first you want more of that you'll get it. If you don't then safely drop.

Say what you will about Mark Lawrence or grimderp or whatever, the protagonists are basically a carbon copy of Cugel teamed up with your typical s&s barbarian. weakness is a big theme of the story, especially for the main character who's the weakest person in his group. I was considering making the villain someone who takes advantage of people's insecurity and sense of powerlessness and uses it to direct their anger to his purposes. It's only when the MC realizes he's been lied to that he turns against it.

The thing was, it actually worked as political commentary, but it fucked with the tone I wanted for my setting. Maybe I could change that though.

The whole deal with the villains in the setting is there's a handfull of factions at war and the villains of the story are actually the weakest faction, but the most unstable and dangerous. I'm wondering how I can play on this to keep the villain I want and the villain I need

It's my favorite fantasy series of all time. So unique and boy does it heighten and prolong the tension until it's unbearable and when it finally comes to a head, there's nothing like it. The Gap Cycle (sci-fi) is somewhat in the same vein and highly recommended.

Its not good at all. The author does way too much of this its done with very little art. It's like a treatise on the characters' insecurities and shortcomings. Every page is full of self doubt and mediocrity that everyone is constantly wallowing in. Its a very cool setting, and it should be an enjoyable adventure, but it feels almost like the author is afraid of having fun.

For sexy S&S? If you want a story where the author is clearly putting his fetishes on full display without it being TOO degenerate then check out the Bloodsong series by C. Dean Andersson. I've only read the first book, Warrior Witch of Hel, but a good chunk of the story is dedicated to a female character being chained and tortured throughout the entire novel. Also Quorthon from Bathory dedicated a song to the author so that's kinda neat if you're a fan.

There's also the notorious Conan story Xuthal of the Dusk (The Slithering Shadow) that pretty much created the formula of 'half-naked barbarian with half-naked female companion battling Lovecraftian monster' that you see in countless paintings and drawings. What makes it notorious is an S&M scene involving two ladies that Howard included because he desperately wanted Weird Tales to buy the story and maybe even turn that scene into the cover art (which Weird Tales did kek).

Simulacron-3 by Daniel Galouye. It was loosely adapted for a movie called 13th Floor (worth a watch).
There's also a few YA(ish) novels that are suspiciously similar to Ready Player Gay.
One is The Eye of Minds by James Dashner (the writer of the Maze Runner series). The other is Erebos by Ursula Poznanski.
Unlike Simulacron-3 I have not read these so your mileage may vary.
There's also a boatload of litrpgays based on VR but those are all uniformly horrible and should be avoided.

Started this today, read the first chapter. The way he writes gives me a bit of a headache, but i am really impressed by the picture he paints considering this was PUBLISHED in 1984. He was probably coming up with the ideas for this in the late 70s based on his early work. Personally, i don't find more modern examples of science fiction (and that isn't counting things like star wars or whatever normies consider) as compelling as reading older works from a modern perspective, especially considering how the Internet changed public perceptions on technology and what is possible. I mean, just imagining the world at the time some of these works are written and the ideas they come up with that we take for granted now really boggles my mind. That's why i liked "We" so much, because even though it was written so long ago, the ideas presented in it seem so tangible and "forward thinking" to me. Long tangent for me to simply say "I'm really looking forward to reading more of this," but i just wanted to share a quick thought I'm having while I take a shit lol.

It's pretty interesting to see the perspective of the time. Like you said, the writing is sometimes difficult to follow. It's the kind of book where if you get distracted and lose your place you need to re-read the whole page.

It somewhat suffers from the (I don't know what to call it) effect where you read genre defining literature, but find it fairly standard because even though it was original at the time, chances are you've been exposed to all the works that were in inspired by it and therefore don't find it very unique.

You might also enjoy Star Force. On balance probably not as good, but it has that thing going on where everyone on the same team is not on the same team that brings some spiciness to Undying. But some of the side characters are better, especially Marvin and Hoon. I don't remember exactly but you might need to give it a book or two of breathing room before you can just crunch them down.
