I think the time period in which the average person was commonly a book reader was not normative. Prior to the modern era standards of literacy among the lower classes were too low, and in the modern era there was only a brief span where such people were sufficiently literate and did not have more advanced technological escapism available. Things are returning to normal in a way.
People are so lazy now because of smartphones, apps, and tablets Do you honestly expect them to have enough willpower to read a book when they could just listen to the audiobook and claimed they've read it?
Reading is necessarily an act of the will. Watching a movie, listening to music, etc. are not, as they only require passive participation.

how much energy you spend thinking about what you're consuming depends entirely on the movie or book itself and the person consuming it, not the medium itself.
I said "necessarily" because I am aware that film can be actively engaged with. But reading a book, at the base level, requires consciously deciphering what you are reading. It's not the same as just watching movement and hearing sounds.
