I use note cards as book marks, I write notes on them and leave them at the pertinent page, then I grab a fresh note card to keep current position. Then I can easily go back later, read over the note, read over the pertinent section, research or alter the note or transfer it to the notebook or computer if needed, sometimes I just leave them there as a reminder on future rereads and perhaps add more to the card.

Sometimes I do a little doodle on the unlined side.

What part of it sounds expensive? I use everyday stuff that I would not keep otherwise as bookmarks. Greeting cards, cinema tickets, things like that.

I use any ephemera that comes to hand, usually receipts or ticket stubs. I keep my books, so years later when I’m going through an old volume, I find that receipt or whatever and it’s a pleasant little trip down memory lane. “Oh, that was when I ate at that indian place on Columbus ave.” It’s a simple thing, but it’s nice to see relics of ones past self.

I've been using a printed 8.5x11 inch copy of the "The Greatest Show On Earth" Mural that has been folded into 1/3rd the size as a bookmark. I need more bookmarks, I use that one in my anatomy textbook and have nothing for my other books.

People here really use the most random stuff. What's wrong with actually using.. you know, bookmarks? My collection isn't even that large, but I have (just counted) 37 bookmarks from bookdepository, 11 from half price books, 6 from goodwill, and some random singles of smaller bookshops. I can't imagine how someone doesn't have a number of actual bookmarks laying around after even buying just 10 books or so.

I always make a themed book mark for whatever I am reading. Pic related is from a couple months ago. But I just put things from the book on it. And when I'm done with the book, I just slip the book mark into the front cover.

I have this nice laminated bookmark my highschool philosophy teacher gave me as a gift that I use for whatever most of my attention is on. Other than that the used bookstore I frequent gives you this oblong business card whenever you buy books so I have a ton of those floating around that I use.

Leaves are my primary bookmarks. most of my books have a leaf or two in them. Oak leaves are best, nice and sturdy even after drying, maple are worst, very brittle once dry and break apart.

I was using a $50 bill that my sister brought back from the US 10+ years ago. I had somehow gotten it into my mind that the bill was outdated and I couldn't exchange it. But I recently took it to a back and got a nice couple pounds for it.

Now I just use a joker from an old deck of cards.
