I loved Heinlein when I was a little hippie in the '70's, especially Stranger in a Strange Land and Time Enough for Love, but I've been going off him ever since. He got seriously weird about incest in his later books and it creeped me out so much I can only read his earlier stuff now. Feminism helped turn me off his theme of old balding hook-nosed blokes who got all the nookie, as well. "Stranger..." was for me one of the seminal books I've read. A truly remarkable piece of fiction, and though I read some of his other books I noticed that he became somewhat formulaic. Something that Stephen King can be accused of too. Which goes to show you that you should never get too smart/clever/big for decent editing.

litrpgesque is a trait/genre, not a method of publishing, so no. Method of publishing gives you no deterministic information about the quality/type of the work, but the genre does. That being said I have a problem with a specific trend in litrpg, namely it being mostly terrible. I don't deny, however, that it is possible for a litrpg book to be good. Allright, let's accept that you have the authority to declare those novels terrible without reading them. They still get mostly positive reviews on /sffg/ then discussed in isolation. Wandering Inn has been mentioned at least 10 times this summer that I know of. Every time there was a number of people who professed liking it. Same goes for Mother of Learning and Worth the Candle - they have been mentioned occasionally for years and received positively by people who read them. Hence I conclude that some of the people here derive entertainment from these books. Hence they are fine with a recommendation chart. Of course constructive criticism of the objective value of these works are fine, but a problem arises when people like you start criticizing what others like without even reading those works.

He barley interacts with anyone and just think "analytically" about what he needs to do which is usually inane shit like git gud. I wouldn't call him a boring or incompetent writer but what I've read of his has always struck me as extremely cynical in intent. Codex Alera feels like a fantasy series put together by a think tank trying to make the "next big fantasy series".
Four different protagonists of varying age and gender for maximum demographic coverage. Equal page counts given to each protagonist regardless of actual narrative weight. Simple supporting characters, with broad and easy to understand personalities, that exist solely to help or oppose the protagonists. Very simple plots that always, always end with a big battle at the end that involves most of the protagonists. Fast, Dan Brown-style pacing with few long stretches of dialogue or introspection and very frequent scene transitions. Magic that is omnipresent and almost exclusively manifests in ways that would make cool special effects for the desired film adaptation. Just enough edginess to seem "real", but not edginess made so omnipresent that it can't be ignored by the squeamish (or edited out of the adaptation).
I feel strange about the series because I don't like it, and I don't like its cynical attitude either, but I still respect the efficiency and focus with which it approaches that cynical attitude. It's like I'm looking in on a bunch of scientists at Frito-Lay congratulating each other on developing a new even more addictive form of Doritos. I can't say Jim Butcher doesn't know what he's doing or doesn't do it well.

I can understand the concern that Butcher writes commercially. Certainly he focuses on long series of low fantasy that are easy to get into and does a lot of dresden merchandizing. However, it's not like he's just dropping quality to produce more content more easily. The dude is commercial, but he he's able to have a large fan base in spite of commercial content because he's fucking good at it.

I'm in the process of trying to transform my style from YA to something edible. (S King level, or something ANYTHING not YA) I told myself I'd take a break from writing to read and learn, but I feel the urge to write every day, and if I don't, I feel like I've missed a quota or failed a goal outright. Any suggestions of what to read and pull from to mend my style on the go? What I want to write is a small scifi paperback. Nothing too complex for a first book. I learned the hard way to not make a first attempt too complex for my tiny new-author brain.

that was the story he's told. It's funny, I went into it expecting a pokemon story but found that the pokemon idea fell apart halfway through the first book. I actually ended up deciding to show him up with my writing, but then realized the reason he made the furies basically stands instead of pokemon was because it's really hard to avoid cringe with animal companions unless you make them part of the background
honestly, the least cringey pokemon stuff I've seen have been in YA books like Eragon and The Underland Chronicles. Even then the "pokemon" are really just big talking animals or dragons. I think I'm definitely going to have to end up following Suzanne Collins' example, which I'm already doing in more ways than one

More adult themes, generally snappy dialogue and a focus on prose and literary quality over hard science and magical systems, though those can still be present. Guys like Roger Zelazny, Michael Moorcock, William Gibson, some of Jack Vance's stuff. Imagine Nabokov writing S&S and you'd be close.

The closest example I can give you is the digimon anime, where the isekai is weird, there's all monsters and only a handful of humans who have to bond to monsters out of necessity, and despite the silliness everyone's in serious danger and barely managing to survive. The main differences are that most monsters used as companions aren't really all that intelligent, and most of the characters learn to harness their own magic that they don't need a pet to use

If your framework is too rigid you'll just end up painting yourself into a corner. I wasn't talking about actually dyslexic people but about the Yea Forums version of it (like autism). Now I feel kinda bad, but it'll pass. As for writing, I am sure it's possible with all the recording options out there and a good editor. I used to work with a dyslexic sys admin. He couldn't read his own PowerShell cmdlets so he had to send them to others to verify the syntax. Most of the time it was okay. You can't do worse than litrpg anyway.

True, but I don't know if I'd call it filler -- maybe author just legitimately wanted to tell the story of how his succubus waifu massaged him into polygamy. From the structure, the monsters and fighting were the filler and the bathing and romance the main course. Was awful either way but I wish they had a label for it.
