Monthly Reading for August: Babel-17 by Samuel R. Delany
Ringworld was good. Didn't like Teela but I guess that's part of any ye olde fiction, to have an easy love interest for the protagonist.
Kayden Stewart
I loved Heinlein when I was a little hippie in the '70's, especially Stranger in a Strange Land and Time Enough for Love, but I've been going off him ever since. He got seriously weird about incest in his later books and it creeped me out so much I can only read his earlier stuff now. Feminism helped turn me off his theme of old balding hook-nosed blokes who got all the nookie, as well. "Stranger..." was for me one of the seminal books I've read. A truly remarkable piece of fiction, and though I read some of his other books I noticed that he became somewhat formulaic. Something that Stephen King can be accused of too. Which goes to show you that you should never get too smart/clever/big for decent editing.
Daniel Morris
Which scifi and fantasy authors do I read if I want to improve my prose for my own novels ?
What's the name of the wuxia/xianxia book written by a Westerner that gets mentioned here every now again?
Teela was really a walking plot device. I know that was the entire point if her but it was still very strange when reading. Her progress after the first book seems even more strange but I only read the synopsis of these since ringworld didn't really catch me.
Jace Nelson
What do I read if I just read LOTR and feel like nothing could ever engage me like it did
>Yea Forums's containment chamber I like that. Posters here must be kept away from wagie threads (very popular when buttcoin was crashing), how to read books in public in such a way to pick up girls and the staple of this board, self masturbatory philosophy wank.
Hit. The. Gym. Girls could probably mop the floor with you.
>disliking a group of stories not based on any trait that they have, but rather based on the format in which they were published
Caleb Flores
Heinlein got better again before he died, maybe he realized what he did. Friday is actually pretty good.
Jace Morales
Why so passive-aggressive? That shit (in more ways then one) is disliked due to being badly written fap bait that somehow combines the very worst of litrpgays and chinkshit. Perfect for the brain dead ADD/dyslexic crowd.
Nathan Moore
The Broken Sword
Ian Carter
>Also, fuck sword & sorcery Nice try, bugman.
Christopher Anderson
Where do I get reference as a sci-fi writer ? Google lacks a lot of stuff.
Nice try, Sanderson. Seriously though I just read a story I thought could have been elevated more with some purple prose. It was a good story, but the prose was beyond simple and I kept thinking if someone like CAS or REH had written this it would have came across a lot more dark and horrifying.
Aaron Bennett
>Why so passive-aggressive? Because you clearly haven't read the novels, as evidenced by the second half of your post. Among those 8 books: >Literally not a single fap bait >Literally not a single chinkshit >Literally only 1 LitRPG and one other, which is so fundementally different from other LitRPG's that the label becomes pointless.
I mean its painfully obvious you haven't read more than 1 or at best 2 novels from the chart. SO why the fuck would you keep complaining about it? When I complain about Conan, its cuz I have read Conan. When I complain about Sanderson, its cuz I have read Sanderson. I know this is Yea Forums, and people here are supposed to be contrarian, which is OK. But can you at least not talk out of your ass?
Austin Gray
>Jules Vernes
i love his books! because they were all written before any of this shit was invented (lets say a submarine), so you know, approximately, what it is, but it's still strange enough to feel like it's a futuristic dream.
Christian Thompson
>Implying the Harry Potter fanfics and chink harem webpages he reads are books Get a load of this guy
Nigga what are you doing? Word for word you sound like some butthurt weeb trying to explain how deep the anime with the 2000 year old loli witch or some such is. And getting your panties in a bunch because I am refusing to acknowledge the brilliance of we(e)b novels and wade hip deep into shit. There really is no difference between you and some light novel spaz.
wot? ones that could go 20,000 leagues under the sea?
John Carter
Obviously not but taking an existing invention and extrapolating its functionality linearly is not in of itself particularly creative
Ian Young
He was a man of exquisite taste. A man, one should say, of enchanted mind. Were I to use the wits my good mother gave me, I would not think him to be true to what I see, for what sane man would hold dream to reality? Yet rather would I not be sane than to lend belief to cruel wakefulness.
>Heh, you can't crticize me because you haven't even read 27,000 pages of zoophilia and harem power leveling How about you go someplace where people actually want to discuss the degenerate garbage you've poisoned your mind with
Brody Sanders
I didn't say i liked his books because of how cReAtiVe he was. I said I liked his books because of how strange he makes things appear. how his books defamiliarise things.
Justin Hall
>Literally no harem >Literally no zoophilia >Literally no power leveling See where I may have a problem? You have literally no idea what the chart contains, and probably judge it based on your anecdotal experience with self-insert self-published Randi Darren-esque harem.
You must read in order to post in a reading general.
Blake Rodriguez
The real mindfuck is recognizing that the things you think are so advanced and progressive and modern today are going to look equally as peculiar and possibly creepy as much of Heinlein's stuff does 60 years later.
Easton Reed
This isn't a fanfiction general either, you unbearable faggot. This is why the Saudis throw you guys off buildings
Can you be butthurt no one recognizes how brilliant your fap bait (and by extension you) is somewhere else? No one here wants what you are peddling.
Chase White
It's a pointless argument to make because some people here are so recursively folded in their posing and pretentiousness that they are incapable of seeing quality anywhere other than in some officially-approved aging brick and mortar publisher's catalog. Fact is we're living through a creative explosion that will be discussed for centuries to come. Of course the corollary of the opening up of the publishing world to all comers is that the signal to noise ratio gets massively worse, but since there's very little posturing satisfaction in finding a true gem in the ocean of garbage, it will remain forever beyond them. Meanwhile people who actually make a living actually writing will keep cranking out their disposable garbage as well, and more power to them.
Hudson Rogers
No, but writing about a much better submarine isn't writing about something that doesn't exist. The Nautilus was probably more like a then-modern sub than an interstellar spacecraft is like a modern rocket. And writing about those isn't noteworthy.
Kevin Evans
Alas we are awash in a sea of literary poo, but that's okay because you like the taste. The rest of us are just pretentious for not sharing your tendencies. Nigga is you serious?
Zachary Bailey
>but that's okay Yes, because you can ignore most of the obvious shit by just reading the synopsis, and ignore the rest by dropping it after 10 pages. >The rest of us are just pretentious Ignoring like half of good speculative fiction, and labeling it as "thrash" is quite pretentious, yes.
Logan Ortiz
We told you check the archives, if you continue this it will be spam.
Anthony Jones
I'm not into web serials either and I'm not sure whether I want them on sffg, but I think its pretty juvenile to talk shit based on what seem to be vague feelings.
Don't move the goalposts. How dare you call those turds in thousand chapters speculative fiction? Especially that Harry Potter fanfic. That's weaponized autism. The truth of the matter is that the stuff you are so vehemently defending sucks and the reason why you are defending it with such vigor is that it makes anyone reading it sucks. Namely you in this case. You can wail and gnash your teeth all you want but it's just badly written slop, without any merit what so ever and only spazes like yourself would defend it. You're a brain dead moron for reading it and I will always point that out, not because I am better than you or I think that you'll improve, but because it's funny watching you get all worked up for someone pointing the obvious.
litrpgesque is a trait/genre, not a method of publishing, so no. Method of publishing gives you no deterministic information about the quality/type of the work, but the genre does. That being said I have a problem with a specific trend in litrpg, namely it being mostly terrible. I don't deny, however, that it is possible for a litrpg book to be good. Allright, let's accept that you have the authority to declare those novels terrible without reading them. They still get mostly positive reviews on /sffg/ then discussed in isolation. Wandering Inn has been mentioned at least 10 times this summer that I know of. Every time there was a number of people who professed liking it. Same goes for Mother of Learning and Worth the Candle - they have been mentioned occasionally for years and received positively by people who read them. Hence I conclude that some of the people here derive entertainment from these books. Hence they are fine with a recommendation chart. Of course constructive criticism of the objective value of these works are fine, but a problem arises when people like you start criticizing what others like without even reading those works.
Ryder Roberts
It's not a book but all this talk of web serials reminded me of 17776, which is a short web comic/novel/HTML5 about football in the future. I highly recommend it
Roadmarks by Zelanzy is really fun. Also "A Lonesome Night in October" is great to read for Halloween. Every chapter is a day in October so you can follow along with it day by day throughout the month
Leo Clark
Star trwk voyagers are realky good
Camden Reed
what the fuck is a web novel
Austin Wright
>Roadmarks by Zelanzy is really fun. Also "A Lonesome Night in October" is great to read for Halloween. Every chapter is a day in October so you can follow along with it day by day throughout the month I'll put those on the list and keep Lonesome Night in October for Halloween.
Are you and the guy posting the web serial chart going to be partaking in the monthly reading this month?
Caleb Watson
Can /sffg/ rate the premise of my fantasy novel I am currently working on? Premise is this.
>Royal Blacksmith kills crown prince of Renaissance-era kingdom (Baldur) after years of frustration >Flees to another kingdom (Belfrie) which is melting pot of races, more late medieval in technology >Three years later, unlikely group of adventurers are hired as bounty hunters by Baldur special forces to capture the Blacksmith, alive >The guy who is apparently head of special forces is actually the Blacksmiths best friend >Group goes through a whole bunch of shit to eventually get the dwarf, a few twists along the way including one of the party members actually being a demon summoned by a blood pact made by king of Baldur to kill the Blacksmith >When party returns Blacksmith to Baldur special forces, they are betrayed, fight ensues >Best friend of Blacksmith is killed, Blacksmith is injured >Party ends up contacting King of Baldur themselves to claim the bounty >King of Baldur comes to Belfrie, executes the Blacksmith himself >Epilogues of what each party member did with the vast wealth they received, some pursue noble causes, some not so much.
Obviously a lot of details are missing there but that's the basics of it. I'm currently 20k words in but have a full scaffold and structure that I am following.
Brayden Diaz
Children of Hurin
Zachary Gray
You posted this exact shit a few threads ago. Fuck off. We might indulge you aspiring authors now and again, but this general was made for the consumption of finished works. Not shit that only exists in your head.
People who shit on Jemisin don't understand she doesn't shield anyone from the penis. Everyone gets fucked.
Nicholas Gomez
Does the dickgirl get fucked?
Noah Gutierrez
>consumption Oh no
Hudson Wilson
Kids, dickgirl, grannies, everyone gets dicked.
Parker Perez
Ok, but why would I read her when Bakker does the same thing but better, and doesn’t beat me over the head with their racial “equality” message.
Juan Martinez
Don't forget the incest.
Jaxon Morris
Why do you think that somehow makes her work good? Are you just easily impressed by writing about sex?
Isaac Lee
>Are you just easily impressed by writing about sex? Yes.
David Long
what's the best gish necromancer?
Landon Edwards
Oh, fair enough.
Carter Bennett
>gish Greatest International Scavenger Hunt?
Carter Ward
Correction, the drawfag is a jap, I got him mixed up with another artist with a similar style that actually is chinese.
He makes neither manga nor anime, just a lot of really nice cyberpunk artwork.
Hunter Taylor
never create anything original only consume things that have been approved by the (((publisher))) good goyum
Christian Thomas
Publishing Houses are dead. Long live Amazon.
Josiah Smith
how dare you ruin my genius commentary on the tendencies of publisher houses by pointing out the fact self-publishing is more viable than it has ever been curse you
Nathan Peterson
No, Bakker just tries to sounds ten thousand times smarter than he really is
Jack Barnes
At least Bakker is interesting and not “minority women fixes problems whitey makes”. Jemisin is a hack. I don’t know how people unironically like her.
>I don’t know how people don't unironically like “whitey men fixes problems minority makes” >hail hydra and all that
Colton Cooper
>So if you’re using Cthulhu, are you an H.P. Lovecraft fan?
>Oh, hell no. This is deliberately a chance for me to kind of mess with the Lovecraft legacy. He was a notorious racist and horrible human being. So this is a chance for me to have the “chattering” hordes—that’s what he called the horrifying brown people of New York that terrified him. This is a chance for me to basically have them kick the ass of his creation. So I’m looking forward to having some fun with that.
Every book she writes is the same thing.
Luke Cook
I never liked lovecraft in the first place and never understood how you dirty freaks who are afraid of water and bathing can find the shit he writes scary
>What are you currently reading? This free anthology I got for signing up to a newsletter. It's actually been pretty based so far aside from one story that was pretty meh that featured the dreaded 'man with tits' female warrior. Otherwise it's been enjoyable pulp-tier fantasy.
Imagine boasting about writing a lame book for petty reasons.
Cameron Cooper
But das racis'. It's hilarious to watch it from the sidelines. That woman has a chip on her shoulder regarding whites the size of Texas. Only in America...
Leo Edwards
Protest fiction is the lowest form of fiction because you're not even trying to entertain readers; it's just the writer wanting everyone to know how bitter they are about something.
Cooper Ortiz
Wow that looks bad.
Nicholas Williams
Kek
Angel Watson
So does your face. >REKT
William Robinson
Say that to my face and not online S&S DYEL, see what happens.
It's all he has in this world, user. He never actually talks about books; just cries.
Cameron Bennett
>Recommend books featuring space exploration and adventure. So, what is it /sffg/?
Nathan Sanders
Hey /sffg/ I've been wondering where the idea of "unwitting doppelgangers" (my own term) began. And by that I mean a doppelganger who shares memories of the person they are imitating, but who was "created" by some other force and do not initially know why they were created or possibly even that they are a doppelganger.
The oldest I can think of is Solaris from 1961.
Don't know about any more until Lisa in Silent Hill (1999) and Maria in Silent Hill 2 (2001).
And then not again until Channel Zero: No-end house (2017) and Twin Peaks: The Return (2017).
>Every chapter is a day in October Yep, been saving that one for Octember all year. Meant to do it last year but forgot. Roadmarks was hilarious, but I wouldn't put it in my Zelazny top 5 Unpublishable 11,000 page Larry Stu Harry Potter fanfics and futanari squirrel girl harem >There are stars, stars, scattered stars, blackness all between. They ripple and fold and bend, and they rush toward him, rush by him. Their colors are blazing and pure as angels' eyes. Tbqh user, it sounds like you're just writing your last d&d session or something. Post some and I'll tell you what I think >The white man doesn't spend an inordinate amount of time and resources fixing problems created by minorities I'm very sorry that you're brown, user, but that's the way the world is Antiquated prose aside, a lot of his stories are really good, especially his dream cycle. Not to mention that modern horror wouldn't be anywhere near where it is without his influence and everything you see out there now is derivative of his works in some form.
kek One of the best possible replies to that statement.
Ryder Miller
Formerly smirked
Luis Anderson
>Post some and I'll tell you what I think He posted it here.
Jaxson Garcia
I don't think I've seen anyone really discuss last month's monthly reading really at all. Is it really just some random book that the OP is pushing people to read? There must be a better way.
Eli Allen
There's usually about half a dozen posts in on thread. What better way would you suggest to force people to write something?
Aiden Collins
We only read Sword & Sorcery and Space Opera here.
"A fictitious prose narrative of book length, typically representing character and action with some degree of realism." Sounds like a novel to me.
Kayden Evans
You don't know what "pulp" means.
Tyler Morgan
According to that iffy definition everything is a novel. Sounds like defensive bullshit to me.
Kevin Richardson
Sounds like you need to get over your self, and take a look at what thread you're in.
Isaiah Moore
Sounds like you need to try harder to break into the big leagues Yudkowsky.
Ryan Foster
books 4 - 7 are considered novels, aren't they?
Christian Diaz
I'll give you a hint, homie. It's not the Harry Potter furry porn fanfic thread, so how about you fuck right off to outer Yea Forums and make your own thread cuz that shit doesn't belong here and no one is interested in the deranged shit you stroke your meat to.
It can be whatever you want it to be. Light dark void life spirit blood
Anthony Morgan
COMPOUND ELEMENTS typically in fantasy theres fire, water, earth and wind and other elements are compounds of two or more. also often theres light and darkness.
Ayden Mitchell
so it's fire/water, earth/air, wood/metal, thunder/lightning? seems like sound should be air, but I guess it doesn't need air necessarily to travel
Lincoln Lee
ice, but instead of fire/water and electricity/ice it's fire/ice water/electricity
Lucas Harris
I'm going to take a break from my Doctor Who books. Should I read the next Skullduggery Pleasant (Mortal Coil), or the second Magician book? Yes, I know I read children's stories
I can't believe I managed to finish these. I'm like the farthest thing from a critic but god damn is the writing pants on head retarded.
Lucas Stewart
Because his characters make bad decisions a lot? Or the actual writing itself? Because the prose isn't horrible for what it is
Ian Barnes
Is LitRPG's the way of the future?
Hunter Hall
I never bothered with the second series just the first trilogy but if I remember correctly it pulls a "lol I was training this whole time for months" and "I agreed to a sekrit plan off screen lol". Also a lot of dumb moping.
Well Bakker elves aren’t feminine, but they’re pretty gay.
Aaron Fisher
Should I base my villain on a fantastic mythical creature I made up, or the cunt currently turning my country into a shithole. Either way, the villain will have the same conflict my MC does
Dylan Brown
Elaborate.
Jason Rogers
Should have never went to Fillory.
Carson Gomez
Sand man bad
Ryan Robinson
Too focused on magic systems (world-building), continues the legacy of bloated epic fantasy slogs, and specifically advised writers to not bother writing short stories.
Lucas Collins
I tried to but it's all that feminine meandering emo shit. I think I read Downbelow Station and Cyteen. Maybe some others.
Or are you into the cat girls?
Luis Hill
I will praise him for not falling for the EDGINESS AND NIHILISM MAKES YOUR STORY DEEPER trap and for not ass-ramming odious politics into his books as well.
Cooper Martinez
>continues the legacy of bloated epic fantasy slogs, This is grossly unfair, even if you legitimately dislike him. He may be doing that with his megaseries, but Elantris and Warbreaker both had endings, and all three Mistborn books had endings in themselves. This was revolutionary debloat at the time.
Colton Gomez
>not ass-ramming odious politics into his books as well. I saw someone here, presumably the cosmerefag, ranting that this is no longer true and he started injecting sjw themes into his writing. Is that false?
Benjamin Diaz
>daniel schinhofen I read a lot of trash, but that was something I wasn't able to stomach. That book in particular most of all. I managed to finish one of his other books. He writes terribly. I had never seen such poor dialogue before. Couple that with the absolute trash that is litrpg and you just have something that is completely unreadable.
Michael Morris
What series will be the new popular entry series in 5 years?
Eli Johnson
You're reading that series? Wait till everyone hand holds fluff, and they do a Shakespeare play in the fucking book couldn't drop that shit fast enough. And I heard from others it gets worse.
It was filler. That entire book was filler. I'm looking to see if he pulls this shit in his binding words book. The play that is, he already had book two fillered up.
Aiden Sanders

I actually enjoyed all the orbital rocketry 101 stuff

What is the fantasy/sci-fi equivalent of the Sharpe series?
Well lads, I finally had therapy. It only took me one session to realize that if my magnum opus doesn't sell the first time around I can always write a sequel
does anyone have a download link for the rabbit who lived? the new waldo rabbit book
Aaron Long
New waldo rabbit and everybody loves large chests audiobooks when?
Justin Morgan
AYYY spoilerionos i know some people hate this interwoven story telling but i really like it. every book makes me more excited about the whole mutliverse thing and because he pushes out a book a month the stories advance at a rapid pace. if you are read this william keep it up. so far the only novel i disliked was remnant. also tell some stories about what happens outside the ship runner is on. could be interesting to see what happens out in the universe with humanity in hiding.
Gotta agree with the autist this one time. That sounds like something taken straight from fanfiction.net or worse places.
Sebastian Morales
>Blurb and all promotional material: "After BAD THING happens..." >200 pages into book >bad thing hasn't happened yet and isn't even foreshadowed
beginning to hate how many publishers do this, it's unavoidable unless you literally just pick books based on covers/titles
Daniel Gonzalez
I had this with a novel I'm making but decided to make the "bad thing happen" into it's own full length novel instead so people aren't being cockteased by it happening at the last 1/10th of the book.
Nathan Hill
Where do I start with Theodore Sturgeon?
Robert Smith
Probably at a lake with a good sturdy fishing rod.
Colton Collins
Why are you like this?
Nicholas Nelson
Teach a man to catch a Sturgeon, and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to make artisanal caviar from a Sturgeon that is sold at prices to exploit class consciences and he'll eat for a lifetime from its sales.
Logan Rivera
Hi i have read lotr trilogy and hobbit. I really liked reading these books especially the travelling parts you know going out forests, mountains. Any reccomendations ? sorry for shitty english.
>>dyslexic crowd I'm actually dyslexic and even I am begging for more quality in litrpg. That being said, some litrpg is "kinda" good, in a YA kinda way. PS. Is it possible to become a writer being dyslexic?, I was told to write and read a lot.
Carson Jones
Just get a good editor who will correct your words. You will probably have to pay a lot though.
Dominic Gomez
>asks if something is possible >doesn't do a basic search on it that would give all the answers he could ever want and instead hopes for a few words from a random user will provide everything he needs. This is your actual problem
Reading Sufficiently Advanced Magic and it has some cool ideas but good god the MC is boring. He barley interacts with anyone and just think "analytically" about what he needs to do which is usually inane shit like git gud. He has no voice at all, but then when he DOES finally talk to someone he just randomly gets all sarcastic and snarky and they just go "oh MC when will your snark ever end" and it's just this WTF 180.
Plus what's the deal with every magic school book that wants to pretend to be a smarter more high brow attempt at Harry Potter just have the MC make dozens of lists of tasks he has to do rather than explore and in depth mechanics.
Zachary Cook
Because Rowe is a hack. Just wait until the protag out of nowhere becomes gay in the last ten pages of the book with 0 foreshadowing. This protag genuinely reads like he’s autistic.
Connor Murphy
The first book of The Magicians explored and went in-depth with its mechanics, but then that all fell away rather quickly.
Brayden Ramirez
>You read webnovels >Other people are autistic That's o big ol' YIKES
Jason Jackson
Bought three /sffg/ related books today. I wound up getting Magician by Feist, The Black Cloud by Hoyle, and Space Merchants by Pohl and Kornbluth. Which one should I read first?
Kayden Hernandez
>want to read something else to get a break from Desolate Era >not that interested in the other few titles I have on my Kindle right now in regards to xianxia/litRPG >go back to DE because I'm still only 34% through it AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I don't discuss politics. Don't drag me into this.
Did you buy them new? The only difference between buying used and piracy is that it doesn't benefit parasites. Buying books from dead authors only serves to enrich the publisher, especially if it's public domain. Why support that?
Juan Morgan
I think there's just a few very determined prolific spammers, such as yourself, pushing these sorts of titles.
Also, I found the specificity of what is read even within that to be amusing.
Sebastian Diaz
I got them used.
Aiden Perry
>these sorts of titles I'm not even following this conversation and have no idea what you're discussing. Nobody reads most of the things I have been reading recently anyhow and don't post much in these threads. I think you're trying to create a convenient narrative for yourself, broski
Austin Baker
Cosmerefag reads gookshit. Color me surprised. Please see
Lincoln Murphy
Don’t worry Cosmerefag, Uncrowned sometime before Halloween. Probably early October.
What kind of Fantasy makes the most money right now? Is it still Grimdark?
William Turner
litrpg's and ecchi romance novels
Logan Walker
Strong independent female assassin/thief
Austin Edwards
Romance Fantasy since Romance is a hell of a lot more popular than Fantasy.
Christian Mitchell

Nathaniel Wilson
Thank god. FUCK GRIMDARK
Chase Brown
>FUCK GRIMDARK This nigga gets it. It would have been nice if Horror Fantasy had caught on like certain S&S stories instead of gay ass grimderp.
Christian Reyes
I wouldn't call him a boring or incompetent writer but what I've read of his has always struck me as extremely cynical in intent. Codex Alera feels like a fantasy series put together by a think tank trying to make the "next big fantasy series".
Four different protagonists of varying age and gender for maximum demographic coverage. Equal page counts given to each protagonist regardless of actual narrative weight. Simple supporting characters, with broad and easy to understand personalities, that exist solely to help or oppose the protagonists. Very simple plots that always, always end with a big battle at the end that involves most of the protagonists. Fast, Dan Brown-style pacing with few long stretches of dialogue or introspection and very frequent scene transitions. Magic that is omnipresent and almost exclusively manifests in ways that would make cool special effects for the desired film adaptation. Just enough edginess to seem "real", but not edginess made so omnipresent that it can't be ignored by the squeamish (or edited out of the adaptation).
I feel strange about the series because I don't like it, and I don't like its cynical attitude either, but I still respect the efficiency and focus with which it approaches that cynical attitude. It's like I'm looking in on a bunch of scientists at Frito-Lay congratulating each other on developing a new even more addictive form of Doritos. I can't say Jim Butcher doesn't know what he's doing or doesn't do it well.
>Just enough edginess to seem "real", He writes like a 12 year old. As if he tries to be edgy but doesn't yet know what actual edgy things are.
Dominic Price
I wouldn’t call anything in any Butcher book particularly edgy
Kevin Allen
Should I read Ender's Game? Does it set a good example for writing in general?
Parker Hall
I can understand the concern that Butcher writes commercially. Certainly he focuses on long series of low fantasy that are easy to get into and does a lot of dresden merchandizing. However, it's not like he's just dropping quality to produce more content more easily. The dude is commercial, but he he's able to have a large fan base in spite of commercial content because he's fucking good at it.
Jose Evans
At what point are there too many sequels in a series ? I've been busy making an outline of a long storyline I had in mind but I'm currently up to volume 12 now. Do I need to dial it back and merge novels together ?
Benjamin Robinson
ender's game is pretty damn good. Just a heads up though, Card is kind of a closet pedarest
Owen Davis
You can write as much as you want, as long as the desire of the MC(s) is fullfilled in the last book and they overcame their weakness(or didn't if you write a tragedy)
Grayson Cox
Damn. Oh well, I can ignore the pedo shit if he's good at writing.
Justin Diaz
Grimdark and S&S are both pretty based when in the right hands. The real King, however, is, was, and always will be New Wave.
/sffg/, do you think it's wrong to "engineer" a book for maximum memorability?
Xavier Kelly
>Codex Alera written by a think tank I haven't read it, but I heard he wrote it because a friend of his bet him that he couldn't write a believable story combining Pokemon and Roman legions.
Gabriel Ramirez
I'm in the process of trying to transform my style from YA to something edible. (S King level, or something ANYTHING not YA) I told myself I'd take a break from writing to read and learn, but I feel the urge to write every day, and if I don't, I feel like I've missed a quota or failed a goal outright. Any suggestions of what to read and pull from to mend my style on the go? What I want to write is a small scifi paperback. Nothing too complex for a first book. I learned the hard way to not make a first attempt too complex for my tiny new-author brain.
Right however you want. No one will ever read what you write anyway.
Noah Martinez
define "YA style"
Carson Thompson
that was the story he's told. It's funny, I went into it expecting a pokemon story but found that the pokemon idea fell apart halfway through the first book. I actually ended up deciding to show him up with my writing, but then realized the reason he made the furies basically stands instead of pokemon was because it's really hard to avoid cringe with animal companions unless you make them part of the background
honestly, the least cringey pokemon stuff I've seen have been in YA books like Eragon and The Underland Chronicles. Even then the "pokemon" are really just big talking animals or dragons. I think I'm definitely going to have to end up following Suzanne Collins' example, which I'm already doing in more ways than one
Alexander Sanders
If you want to be an author, learn about story structure first.
Joseph Ward
what differentiates New Wave from other subgenres?
Jose Smith
What subgenre are you aiming for, pokemanon? Sounds like it would be easiest to accomplish in a generic YA setting, but those are boring.
Ask yourself: What is the information I want to convey with this sentence?
Jaxon Lewis
Literally what Fitzgerald did with The Great Gatsby.
Jeremiah Ward
More adult themes, generally snappy dialogue and a focus on prose and literary quality over hard science and magical systems, though those can still be present. Guys like Roger Zelazny, Michael Moorcock, William Gibson, some of Jack Vance's stuff. Imagine Nabokov writing S&S and you'd be close.
Angel Torres
huh. guess my own work falls under new wave.
probably shit new wave tho

Yeah, I am writing YA but I don't think it's going to be generic. If anything, I'm worried that I'm going a bit too off the walls with the concept
The closest example I can give you is the digimon anime, where the isekai is weird, there's all monsters and only a handful of humans who have to bond to monsters out of necessity, and despite the silliness everyone's in serious danger and barely managing to survive. The main differences are that most monsters used as companions aren't really all that intelligent, and most of the characters learn to harness their own magic that they don't need a pet to use
Umm some of those Earthsea books. One of the characters decides to be a mother instead of a wizard

Brando Sandersu. >Probably shit You never know until you try. Just be careful if you're considering publishing. I've thought about posting something here, but they give you the death penalty if you're caught. Don't get too bogged down conceptualizing, user. If your framework is too rigid you'll just end up painting yourself into a corner. You want to be able to deviate if it feels right or interesting, and when that happens all that time and energy spent outlining turns to waste. Trust your muse and take risks. Good things tend to happen.

i am 21k words into my current project and i intend to self-publish
David Morgan
>self-publish how do you intend to reach your audience?
I wasn't talking about actually dyslexic people but about the Yea Forums version of it (like autism). Now I feel kinda bad, but it'll pass. As for writing, I am sure it's possible with all the recording options out there and a good editor. I used to work with a dyslexic sys admin. He couldn't read his own PowerShell cmdlets so he had to send them to others to verify the syntax. Most of the time it was okay. You can't do worse than litrpg anyway.
Aren't you a bit (and I am being generous here) too old to read Dragonlance? It wasn't even all that interesting setting for 2nd edition D&D.
Daniel Baker
Any interesting stories with fantasy MC in modern world? Something similar to the Chinese transmigration cliche except doesn't read like a shitty lvl up litrpg?
I spent a long time conceptualizing, but it all fit into place once I figured the MC out. now basically every cartoonish or anime element of the setting ties in to his insecurities in some way. the pokemon, the big fucking sword, the destined hero stuff. it all leads to the same place. all I need to do is write it
Jacob Baker
I like them... they typically have better plot and char. development Theres only so much 'goddess cheat power' and collecting loli slave girls like they're pokemon that I can take before it gets old
Thomas Johnson
>He doesn't read kino D&D cashgrab novels Your loss.
technically yes but it's a classic so it gets a pass.
Nolan Morgan
Kinda mean stylistically.

Make new thread I'm too retarded to make one.
Parker Long
No. It's just a book that features children.
Dylan Johnson
free thread no bitching
Jackson Richardson
That isn't how it works. Do a search on hypergraphia.

New Wave was just a description of the works that were a reaction against pulp fiction. Calling yourself new wave now is like calling yourself an abolitionist.

Started reading spellmonger and shit is fun Too bad i cant find thaumaturge online and im on my neetbux so cant afford it
Alexander Sullivan
True, but I don't know if I'd call it filler -- maybe author just legitimately wanted to tell the story of how his succubus waifu massaged him into polygamy. From the structure, the monsters and fighting were the filler and the bathing and romance the main course. Was awful either way but I wish they had a label for it.
Adrian Miller
it's on mobilism

It's the style that matters, hombre
