the love the various characters have for each other is so beautifully written, and purest example is the relation between the protagonist and the girl he 'meets' by seeing her while dwelling in the prison tower of her father, across some expanse in a different building, feeding her birds.
Their love becomes a furtive thing later on because of circumstances beyond their control, but it's just so nicely imagined, and perfectly captures the initial sublime of romantic love.
