he is just like the common man. he has no perception beyond his little circle for him all that exists is the daily dripping of signaling hormones (i.e. daily activity like eat, get entertained, sleep, socialize, etc that give a sense of reward) but his subconsciousness is not satisfied and it keeps giving him misery so he copes with it and tries to hide it with passion.
for me i see a man in a pitch black room crying his heart out in front of his existential dread/subconsciousness begging it to leave screaming "look i am passionate, i have a purpose" but it doesn't respond
