Everybody's a nerd these days so it's not just your old neckbeards (who I'm starting to suspect are dying out).
And since cons are attended by everyone these days, it's a pretty penny to make plus all the photos and publicity can't hurt your image. Especially since all cons are these days is just a giant advertisement for movies.
