Has any philosopher ever given a reason as to why we shouldn't kill ourselves?

it's pointless to kys as well. it's just a performative martyrdom for yourself.

Churchyard

you laugh at OP, but every day he’s working that mind like Arnold Schwarzenegger, and one day he be flexin

ONE DAY

The point for most people is to end the pain and not have to live out a bleak and miserable existence. I won’t deny there’s an aspect of self-indulgent marytrdom but I think that’s only like 5% of the motivation usually.

Kant and most utilitarians argue against suicide in most instances. Most virtue ethicists argue against suicide except in extremely specific cases.

to argue against suicide requires arguing for an actual value to life, which is worthless is you're already suicidal and don't mind the loss of your life and thus don't value your life. suicide or continuing living are both emotional decisions and hence can't be argued for or against either way. the only reason i'm still alive is because i'm afraid of failing my suicide and ending up vegetated

>the only reason i'm still alive is because i'm afraid of failing my suicide and ending up vegetated
that's a massive cop-out. if you truly wanted to kill yourself you would already be dead.

or vegetated

it wouldn't matter

you can't kill yourself if you're paralyzed and under the supervision of a caregiver 24/7

>Siddhartha
is not a made up word dummy, it's from Herman Hesse novel

I am a utilitarian and I do not argue against suicide

Can I ask you about my specific case? Because I've been considering suicide for a long time, but my philosopher friend says it would be immoral by all three major systems of philosophy. I think he's full of shit but he won't do more than rehash 101 level tropes with me.

Siddhartha himself was a philosopher beyond Hesse's fictional character. Siddhartha Gautama

Siddhartha is a book you pleb and it's pretty good

that's a pretty oddly specific thing to worry about, since there are ways to ensure success

Jesus.
