Almost all of best stories written this millennium are from video games.
Not that video game stories are better than the classics, no no—there's just not any good books.

this

For the game to invent a way of artistically communicating via videogame which was so convincing that an entire genre was spawned only replicating that effect and then this genre began to attract non gamers. Eventually the genre would produce a masterpiece of the type and you'd be set.

Which weirdly means that it would need to be a phone game.

1. It's 'canon', you spastic.
2. Just involving writing doesn't make something eligible to be in the Western canon.

I don't play games, but whenever I hear people who would know a whole lot about it, far more than I at least, discuss Nier Automata, they speak of it in such terms. Haven't played it, so I wouldn't know. But I wonder if that's as close as games have gotten thus far.

God no, it's Taro Yoko's weakest game and you only hear about that one because the main character is half naked, therefore cosplayers are making a profit by cosplaying as her.
Drakengard, Drakengard 3 and NieR are way better.

Convert MYFAROG into a video game. How do board games manage to be so much more masterfully crafted than video games? No collaboration.

>weakest game

What about the mobile shit he has done?

Two words: shit.

Probably would be tough as access to older video games is tough to the point that most people don't play games older than a few years

Not really.

Games from as little as 10 years ago are borderline unplayable now

Depends. Skyrim + mods make the game look like it was released in the future. Even older games like stalker SoC or L4D2 can be made better than most modern day games just by changing textures because the base game & engine still hold up.

the death of harold bloom

Is it still the original game?
That seems more like a folk story that adapts and changes with each generation than a work of art that persists

Computers to plateau so that a video game made in 2100 is still playable in 3100. Or, at least, its source code would have to be 100% free and open source so that it could be ported forward without any issues. This is the biggest hurdle in vidya's way, games made 20 years ago are literally unplayable on modern machines without modification.

Mario is the illiad of vidya

This the high art trilogy of Japan. Each one of these game's stories is generally regarded among the Japanese as being better than any conventional novel released in the 21st century.

I don't think there's any real reason that video game narratives should try to emulate canonical literary modes. In a very naked way, the technology is different--affect and response are necessarily going to function differently. Video games must move towards new modes of expression. The only games I know of off the top of my uneducated head which acknowledge or strive towards this new writing are MGS2 and various obscure pornographic romps.

Novels were originally considered junk entertainment for the poor until they became popular with the rich, after that they were considered high art. The same thing happened with film. The "western cannon" is little more than rich people circle-jerking about what they like.

No idea, mobile games aren't videogames, they are digital, portable slot machines.

Who?

Games like The Undertale and The Deltarunes have already entered the western canon, at least, the latter will after it's release. Games like Resident Evil have entered the canon already too, at least 1-4. Some movies have entered the canon too. Fight Club, 2001 A Space Odyssey, I could go on. Albums like Miles Davis Kind Of Blue and John Coltranes A Love Supreme have also entered the canon. Earthbound is a game in the canon. Earthworm Jim, I never played it, but yet it's in the canon. Take art pieces like Starry Night and the picture of pepe with his fingures in the form of a heart. Those are also in the canon.

It would take a whole lot of money and a talented individual who doesn't care about the market. Such games actually exist. You just don't know them.

this is a great post. i appreciate this poster.
