As a scientist at heart (growing up in a religious household) I found very early in my teens that so many things in the Bible simply didn't make any sense, or were physically impossible. I saw no possible mechanism in which any being could know all, see all, and control all. The obvious tall tales of the Bible led me to a consideration of the rest of the doctrine, and I concluded that if some of it was too loony to be true, there was no reason to think that the rest of it was true. Yes, I considered the golden rule to be pretty good, and several of the commandments as well, as good directives for living in harmony with one's neighbors. But there is no room in my world-view for the supernatural (nor any necessity), and that includes religion. My conversion culminated in my reading of the great Richard Dawkins’ “The God Delusion,” solidifying my beliefs. I’ll end with a quote from him:

It's really unfortunate that today the term "atheist" has become synonym for "scientific materialist", when the latter is a philosophical position and not one that anyone has to agree to, regardless of other views they might hold. You can also be atheist while being spiritual, as Buddhists are. I myself believe in many spiritual realities, but have never believed in an "almighty being" or the Judeo-Christian God. I simply hold a different position on the nature of reality, namely that consciousness is the fundamental root of it and that our consciousness is not "biological" in nature, and is eternal as well. There's been some nice work by Ian Stevenson and Jim B Tucker regarding past-life recollections and their correspondence to present-lifetime birthmarks and phobias on a person. Abrahamic religions have really sullied the conversation around these matters, that's for sure. Will take some time for culture to break free from this nonsensical "atheist" versus "christian" binary we see.
Atheist spiritualists are possibly even more cringe than atheist materialists, and I assure you that's a very high bar to clear

Go ask the many atheists who've taken DMT or had NDE's whether they're still scientific materialists afterwards. The overwhelming majority in both cases are not, and acknowledge these as profound spiritual experiences, even without them being spiritual individuals beforehand. Heck, you can take DMT for yourself and see whether you remain convinced in all your previous views - I've read of many people who have no inclination towards spirituality at all, but simply couldn't help but accept the belief that the nature of consciousness is nothing like what modern, materialistic science holds it to be, and that death is not the end of it.
