I must tell you, he can't write good characters but he plays with interesting approaches to scientific ideas, that's kinda the appeal, easy, digestible sci fi.
If you want something a little more deeper I'd recommend you read Arthur C. Clarke instead. Specifically Space Odyssey and Childhood's End.

Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoom/Mars series. His Tarzan series is good too, but the first book is gonna put you off unless you already want to read jungle stuff.
