Light Novels

Is is it just me or do light novels from Japan just suck? Seriously I have read fan fiction that is better than most of the light novels out of Japan. I know there are exceptions but can someone tell me why this is the case.

Because of the over saturation of the market
Because they are the most shamelessly self-indulgent pieces of escapism known to man
Because originality means writing about yet another isekai MC getting stuck in a fantasy world, but this time he has a phone!
There is no fucking standard of quality here

Translations are trash to be fair, do professional ones even exist?

>I know there are exceptions
Can you please name some? I try reading some light novels and they all seem to be quite bad escapism.

Heard Overlord is pretty decent. Yojo Senki is good if you want some nazi stuff. Re: Zero is if you want your MC to really suffer (It is an isekai, but he would be better off being dead)

>That one guy who adds manga and lightnovels to his goodreads

konosuba is good for an LN. By that I mean it's pretty trash but a decent waste of an afternoon. It's all escapism, the japs live single lives of wagecuckery worse than we do.

Their are problems though
Overlord - MC is OPAF and never loses, but it is fun to see how dark it goes even if it dips its toe into edgy territory

Yojo Senki - Same problem as above, but the characters are interesting and it has some decent philosophy.

Re:Zero - It is an isekai, so he is going to get a harem. In fact, all i have listed have a harem of sorts, but that thing is unavoidable with Jap. lit.

This really brings the question is that if there is one change you could make to the LN industry or give a tip to an author what would you?

Lot of shit in Japan sucks. I got introduced to something called a "drama" by some dickhead on Yea Forums called *The Black Devil and the White Prince*. It was worst than anything I've ever seen on the Hallmark channel.
Lot of manga and anime is shit too. This is why I stick mostly to 80's/90's/early 00's stuff. Everything now is a copy of the past.

Get decent quality assurance and, I'm going to get shit for this but, get inspiration from sources outside of the LN industry, stop pandering to otaku. By marketing only to otaku, you are actually killing the industry. You alienate any potential buyers and there's only so many otaku who will be willing to buy the merchandise to keep yourself afloat

Awesome. Thanks for the advice.

thx for recommendations, still, it might be some time before I read any of them, have to rest my brain from the last light novel I read.

Which was that? Out of morbid curiosity.

Otaku/nerds are "the industry." If you stop writing for them, you're no longer writing LNs. That's like saying YA authors would be better writers if they stopped writing for young adults or that romance authors would be better writers if they stopped writing for horny housewives.
If you're insinuating that you want to become a "LN author" yourself - don't. It's a genre created by marketing and has pretty much no meaning outside of Japan. Just be a regular author, like everyone else.

>can someone tell me why this is the case.
You're reading pulp fiction written with the sole intention to make antisocial 14-40 year olds feel like their base desire for companionship, romance, and happiness is fullfilled. There is no nuance to it because the writers themselves are also spastics who have no clue about the real world, and the readers don't want it either because their fantasy world has to be perfect and, beyond minor sufferings of the protagonist which are always swiftly healed by muh waifu, without too much real conflict or any complicated ideas in it beyond "friends are important" and the like.
Good writers have profound ideas and are obviously not interested in writing their own flavour of "baka hentai you saw my pantsu >o

Please say more! I am pretty interested in this subject.

The Rising of the Shield Hero
First LN I ever read was Spice&Wolf which I actually quite enjoyed, but then every LN I tried to read was garbage culminating with The Rising of the Shield Hero, I wouldn't say its the worst one but it is the one that made me stop trying to find anything else I might enjoy in that industry.

Aah. That explains a whole lot. Terrible Motivation. 2D MC. Harem. All of his villains are cackling evil cucks. Any who are not are his friends. He is the best at everything he does. Etc...etc...etc..

Truth be told I never understood the appeal. It is a nice books to fuck around, but there are actual fans to this subpar book.

Pretty much, what I have found is that most light novels are like the japanese equivalent of LITRPG and (I can't believe i'm gonna say this) they are even worse than that.

bungou stray dogs, kino no tabi.
I'm reading 12 kingdoms now, it's supposed to be good but it's honestly not. I'm just reading for best boy (mouse).
Kino no Tabi is legit good. Haven't done the S&W one but I love the anime.
This. It's all so tiresome. The majority of LN/manga/anime are absolute garbage. There's a few diamonds though.
LN is just japan's version of YA. 99% of YA is garbage, but once in a while you get something good even for non-teenagers.

Not a single LN I've bothered to read warranted the praise they received, on Yea Forums or other places. Things like Haruhi, Bakemonogatari, Index, Log Horizon, Goblin Slayer, etc., are praised to high heavens but let's be honest- the books only justify their existance once they're in the paper recycling bin.
I mentioned this in the last post but what became immediately clear to me is that it's all dumb dumb derivative garbage so obviously aimed at market research approved demographics that the whole "art"form can collectively function as a case study on creative bankrupcy in Japan.
I will concede that anime and manga, of course, struggle with the same shit, however, those are not purely written media, and thus can get away with a lot more crap.

I'm particularly annoyed by the derivative nature of contemporary LNs. Circles that engage in reading LNs generally see parody of the genre as a display of virtuosity by the author but don't realise that since 2006, including 4th wall breaking moments pertaining to anime clichés and whatnot in a story has become so par for the course it's basically a cliché in itself. And don't expect any of these "meta" stories to be profound whatsoever- they have no purpouse beyond their immediate function of pointing out another cliché, so don't expect any commentary on LN story telling in general, for example. That would be too high brow for the average consumer, who, meanwhile, is still busy being impressed by a tsundere character describing herself as a tsundere.

that's some dank anger. the west has the same exact market, but instead of recognizing wank material as wank material, they form cults of smugness around it and call themselves intelligentsia for reading 10 vampire erotica novels a year. the western tumblrina identifying themselves by harry potter house is just a non-self-aware version of a weeb wanking to generic redhead tsundere #451. Look at this sss gridman shit. every day Yea Forums is choked in threads and the only merit is the lead girl has a really short skirt and chubby thighs. and they unironically say things like "girl of the decade." that's what an IQ of 100 will buy you.

Same
If you consider as a light novel, welcome to N.H.K isn't bad.
Anyone has read Suzumiya Haruhi novels? are good? Also, i know there's light novels of Dirty Pair, but i'm not sure about its quality

>the west has the same exact market,
Oh, I'm well aware, but we're speaking about LNs specifically. Don't think I care any more for the "young girl and her two potential boyfriends topple mustache twirling dictator using magic" genre (which, as far as I am aware, is more or less dead now, same for the "my boyfriend is actually a werewolf/zombie/ghost" shit).

>instead of recognizing wank material as wank material, they form cults of smugness around it and call themselves intelligentsia
Interestingly, western consumers of japanese pulp do this too. It's like they all have an intense yearning for something intelectually stimulating but instead of broadening their horizons they instead cling to their usual entertainment and, as you said, build a facade that implies extreme erudition for having consumed and "understood" said entertainment.

I don't know about Yea Forums, haven't been there for ages. It doesn't surprise me that their only criteria for a good character is whether it has a meme design and an agreeable personality.

>Anyone has read Suzumiya Haruhi novels? are good?
Yes. No. Even the author himself doesn't want to touch the series with a ten foot pole- that should say enough.

>Yea Forums
if it makes their dick happy it's "good". it's non-erotic porn.
>YA
moves in trends but leaves behind residual cults. the vampire trend is over but you still have hardcore fans still producing and consuming. then it was the dystopia phase. it's verbal seasonal fashion, not literature. use and discard.

What about Kagerou Daze? It's one of the few light novels that isn't genre fiction.

I quit anime for manga expecting more substance, aside from Berserk and Vinland Saga to somd degree it was mostly shit, some had entertainment value, but nothing more. Now so-yBoys will get mad at this and start ranting on how anime is actually deep and profound and that I've been reading the wrong ones, but I read about ~80 of the more established and critically praised, it was and will be shit. After that I went into WN/LN and usually they were a bit better, but 90% of the plot was escapism. In fact, the plot of all isekkai can be boiled down to this, you have generic loser MC whi wasted his life and opportunities, now he is transferred into another world and has to prove everyone wrong and show he isn't a loser, also he attracts 1D females for no apperent reason and all other male chars are incompetent. There are usually slight variations to make things seem "unique", shit like Overlord or Re:zero, give the story a slighly different spin and suddenly all the retatds go amd call it a superb work of literature that saturates its self from the rest. But it's all just escapism shit. Stop reading it, no you want get a second chance ever in a magical world, but you can have one in this, when? Now, go fix your shit, start small, get in shape and later an education.

The Baccano light novels are as obnoxiously written as any other light novel, but it is funny

The problem with these kinds of things is that their translations (usually fan translations) are so weird that I spend the entire book rewriting each sentence as I read it. Whether it'd be better or not remains to be seen, but at least it'd flow better.

Is the Rurouni Kenshin one bad?

'cause you only listed garbage. If you can't find the readable one's, you're a lost cause. A friendly reminder that most people on Yea Forums have shitty taste in general and it wouldn't suprise me, if they came here too. Well except for kino no tabi/Youjo Senki, no good LN was mentioned

Goblin slayer is good :)
