I've had The Knight sitting in my bathroom unread for close to a year now. How is it? BotNS was too much for me, I'm too stupid.

wtf is that tiny BOTNS?

Don't be. He left you a titanic legacy of work, and he heard the Voice, so that if you embrace salvation, the day will come when you can bow to him and thank him yourself.

I am a Christian my friend

Well there you go then. "I will cease to grieve for thee henceforth, Belacqua."

Time itself is a thing, so it seems to me, that stands solidly like a fence of iron palings with its endless row of years; and we flow past like Gyoll, on our way to a sea from which we shall return only as rain.

>not a catholic
no salvation pour vous!

Is that Dr. Robotnik?

The Knight manages to be both more accessible and about as profound as BotNS.

Orthod*x my friend

The Knight is pretty good, although paced very unevenly.

I just finished Urth of the New Sun. What exactly were the undines? I remember the story of the seeds thrown into the sea, so they were aliens? Why did they want to stop the New Sun? Did the hierodiules or whatever know about them? Was Baldanders an alien? What was the deal with the "second" severian that was alluded to? Do the Long Sun/Short Sun expand on the lore of the universe/Urth? Are they a completely different story or do they connect to severian?

It's been a while since I've read it, but if you remember the male sailor who tried to kill Sev in Urth, he explicitly stated that he wanted to prevent the coming of the New Sun because it would kill all existing life on Earth. That extinction-level event is partially responsible for the dominance of new lifeforms, like the Green Man in Saltus. The magicians in Sword likely wanted to prevent it for the same reason, and I assume Abaia and Erebus are no different.

About the second Sev, it could be one of two things: one, he died halfway through Urth (when he was in the robot armor); two, there was a first, "failed" Sev before the events of Shadow [see the end of Citadel]. The undines are the slaves/wives of Abaia, who is himself an ET. I think Baldy was a human who was in service to Abaia, and so grew to abnormal proportions.

Did sonic finally win or something

why do you store books in your bathroom??

Is Long Sun any good? I've nearly finished Urth and I'm still craving more Sun.

He was a senior editor on the staff of the journal Plant Engineering for many years[8] before retiring to write full-time, but his most famous professional engineering achievement is a contribution to the machine used to make Pringles potato chips.[9]
very based

true

I've almost gone through the whole Wizard Knight and I think that it's less accessible than BotNS. The surface story is easier to follow but there's waaayyy more dialogue which consists largely of the characters throwing vague questions and answers at each other. The way everything in the book is built around concept of chivalry and power structures took some time to get used to but is actually cool once you get it, it's kinda like a samurai movie with their honor-to-the-point-of-stubborness characters. The fantastical stuff is really cool when it happens and Wolfe's vague style really works there, but these moments are not as common as in BotNS.

I love "The Sailor Who Sailed After The Sun".

For a moment I thought that was the Pole Chudes guy.

Long Sun is more surface level than New Sun or Short Sun, but the main character still suffers from weird ass dreams/hallucinations. It's not as good as Sun, but it leads into Short Sun which is close in quality to New Sun in my opinion.

When one of them swims up the river she says that they swam across the stars or something like that so yeah they are aliens. Their plan was to enslave all of humanity similar to how the Ascians were. Very clear Lovecraft influence. It doesn't seem clear that they actually wanted to stop the new sun from coming since one of them saves Severian from drowning in the beginning of Shadow.
The hieros knew for sure.
Baldanders was a human who used some sort of method to keep his body producing growth hormone for his entire life. This in theory should slow down his aging process. He also added gills since he knew his body would eventually become too heavy to support its own weight on land.
Severian uses his time travel powers to influence his own past to ensure the new sun comes.
Long Sun and Short Sun are related to New Sun, but don't go in expecting answers. They only provide more questions.

guy in the back looks so happy
