It undeniably does, but even most artists/creators (of any kind) have moved across multiple social media platforms to stay relevant, and discoverable. The personal website isn't quite dead, but things such as links out and webrings (to discover more cool shit) seem to be.

Creation is now defined as pure "content" and the vast majority of people have become conditioned to wanting to receive it through an oversaturated feed, and to only give it a second of attention. Beyond that it's inconvenient.

The primary problem is that of size - specifically, that large communities just don't work all that well. Twitter is garbage partly because it's got millions of users. Smaller communities - think pre-social media forums or small Discord servers - are both much more manageable and better suited for actual nuanced discussions.

Back when the Internet was more of a college-to-college thing, newbies to the 'Net would have to basically lurk moar to learn how things worked and not fuck up. Because it was a yearly thing with a manageable number of newcomers, things were okay on the Internet. But then came Eternal September - i.e., September 1993, when AOL began offering USENET service to its customers. Without a cap to the influx of new users (which the freshmen influx naturally provided), the culture could not integate the large amount of new users. All of the AOL newcomers overwhelmed the existing culture, which basically fucked it up for everyone.

Capitalism, dumbass tech bros, and government surveillance don't help improve things, to be sure. But the primary problem with the Internet is that it's just too goddamn big in too many goddamn places for anyone to do a goddamn thing about making it better.

(We should all go back to BBS forums and GeoCities sites. Or whatever the Indie Web/modern web equivalent of that is these days, anyway.)

I just miss small communities. I remember having niche forums for certain interests and games, were the regulars all knew each other. There was a respect and understanding of where people were coming from because you'd seen so many of their posts you were willing to hear them out. I've gone back and visited them in the last year or so, and of course they're all dead - everyone moved to Discord or Reddit.

The problem with the concentration of discussion happening in a handful of massive platforms isn't just how homogenized the conversation framework becomes, but how 'social media-y' it is. Every comment and reply has a score next to it that tells you how popular it is, and that just wrecks the whole point of it for me.

What /should/ happen is that we should realise that the massive platforms have gone to the dogs and seek something out, but that just isn't happening for whatever reason. No marketing budget for people like us, I suppose.

Their interface is horrible, though, you'd better search for posts in a specific date range, then choose some boards, and alter the search to get meaningful selection.

I found out what to do. Just go to the groups page signed into a google account, type "before:YYYY/MM/DD" followed by a search term, and there you have it. For some reason though all results would stop loading after 29 or 30 posts, which is probably due to google's fucked up search program. Anyways, I went through a few and they're just what you would expect. Lots of signatures, university or corporation addresses, and just general hobbyists. The average reply length is also way longer, so that the vast majority of posts were at least a few sentences long. It wasn't my first time through the archive but it's neat to revisit it. I just hope google sorts it out.

The memetic culture of Yea Forums has progressed through several stages, which I will outline. My memory is a bit too jumbled to give precise dates, so you'll just have to fill those in on your own.
1. Sincere -- original stage. Memes are used because they are funny, with no deeper meaning. Not much to say about this, other than to stress the "no deeper meaning" aspect (no political meaning either). Examples: over 9000, pool's closed, longcat. Most memes from this period are dead and would probably appear "cringey" to modern posters.
2. Ironic. Memes are used to express a joke that is not the image itself. Memes are a way of communicating jokes in some sort of meta context. Example: ">my face when / >mfw". This isn't showing a funny image reflecting the poster's reaction to something, but is an image in which the reaction itself is the joke. Other examples: ishgddt/shiggy diggy, trollface. I find this stage hard to explain in hindsight and I think modern users would find it difficult and alienating. Personally, this was my most enjoyable period of using this site.
3. Post-ironic. The true downfall begins at this point. Memes are no longer taking place in a meta context, but are images used to express a sincere feeling, albeit in an ironic way. The previous ">my face when" is corrupted to ">that feel when/>tfw" and now expresses something the user actually feels. ">tfw no gf" is a literal lament about not having a girlfriend, but expressed as if it were a joke. Politics also enters in at this point. You can notice a difference here, as even with the previous political jokes about Ron Paul, these were still Stage 2, utilizing a doomsday scenario to make a meta joke (and thus it wasn't obnoxious and was still funny); the new Stage 3 political humor is based around sincerely advocating some political viewpoint. I don't think I really need to give examples of this as it is still ongoing.

I recently entered to civfanatics(a 20+ years civilization forum) and it was pretty active. GOTM is still active and the two mods i used to play are still being developed(one is a mod of a mod of a mod of a mod at this point, he has a road map to understand what the thing is).

Since the internet's earliest days, it was clear that a unique form of communication, that went beyond the gross-simplification that "electronic mail" or "instant messaging" implied, allowed people, namely with above-average IQs (being the ones to understand and have the income for the technology, etc) to present an idealised form of not only themselves, but of the topics that they discussed.
Looking at the news groups from the early 90s, you will see that for all the obnoxious, proto-forum, imageboard or BBS language which some falsely ascribe to Yea Forums, you will notice a pure, discussion of whatever topic the groups where concerned with.
Disguised in sometimes polemic language or the inane hierarchies of moderation within forums (fuck the mods), what largely existed was a realm, a symposium where the "elites" of the digital world came together to discuss what was completely implausible or outright stigmatised within the real world.
This gave way to an (without irony) euphoric feeling to those who now had the power to discuss, create and curate what was important to them.
Most lurkers will hopefully at least remember the tail-end of this period, the beginnings of broadband, the breakthrough of p2p into the mainstream, niche forums, newgrounds, of course Yea Forums and a handful of other sites that allowed a subculture that was never actually hidden but was only found by those who were less-than sociable in the real world.
Then as we know, with broadband video streaming sites, social media, and the growing commercial interests amazon ebay etc, it was all but certain that young girls and old people would come and allow the internet to be commercialised and cannabalised by the same nerds who once had a paradise,a symposium, where episodes of start trek were described scene for scene or ridiculous songs about chuck norris and batman were animated.
