Gautama, Siddhārtha. Dislike him. A cheap nihilist, insipid and foolhardy. A pied piper, pathological narcissist and a cloying moralist. Some of his modern disciples are extraordinarily amusing. Nobody takes his claims about remembering past lives seriously.
Majjhima Nikāya. His best work, though an obvious and shameless imitation of Yājñavalkya's "Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad"
Dīgha Nikāya. Dislike it intensely.
Dhammapada. Dislike it intensely. Ghastly rigmarole.

>Buddhist monk of western origin
lol

So what? What's the problem with that?

>"Buddhism is not original, Buddhism is not distinct, there is absolutely nothing original in Buddhism that can't be found in the Upanishads and everything before it, in the various branches of the Vedas"

Fuck I hate these spiritual hippies.

Neither is Christianity, yet Christianity is still the most relatable theology to the nature of being human.
Budhism and Dinduism is literally just if I ignore it hard enough, it won't affect me.

>Minhaj-i-Siraj wrote of this attack:[73]

>Muhammad-i-Bakht-yar, by the force of his intrepidity, threw himself into the postern of the gateway of the place, and they captured the fortress, and acquired great booty. The greater number of the inhabitants of that place were Brahmans, and the whole of those Brahmans had their heads shaven; and they were all slain. There were a great number of books there; and, when all these books came under the observation of the Musalmans, they summoned a number of Hindus (buddhists) that they might give them information respecting the import of those books; but the whole of the Hindus (buddhists) had been killed. On becoming acquainted [with the contents of those books], it was found that the whole of that fortress and city was a college, and in the Hindui tongue, they call a college [مدرسه] Bihar.

>The image, in the chapter on India in Hutchison's Story of the Nations edited by James Meston, depicts the Muslim Turkic general Bakhtiyar Khalji's massacre of Buddhist monks in Bihar, India. Khaliji destroyed the Nalanda and Vikramshila universities during his raids across North Indian plains, massacring many Buddhist and Brahmin scholars.[74]
This passage refers to an attack on a Buddhist monastery (the "Bihar" or Vihara) and its monks (the shaved Brahmans). The exact date of this event is not known with scholarly estimates ranging from 1197 to 1206. While many historians believe that this monastery which was mistaken for a fort was Odantapura, some are of the opinion that it was Nalanda itself.[19] However, considering that these two Mahaviharas were only a few kilometres apart, both very likely befell a similar fate.[75] The other great Mahaviharas of the age such as Vikramshila and later, Jagaddala, also met their ends at the hands of the Turks at around the same time.[76]

Fucking BASED lmao!

Yutthadammo Bikkhu... he's an interesting guy. He's basically what got me into Buddhism, i must have seen dozens and dozens of hours worth of his videos. However I would be wary of looking to him for all your answers for Buddhism. He has certain ideas that I don't completely agree with and I think he can tend to lead people down the wrong path if you're not careful. I'm appreciative of his work, but just be cautious listening to him too much.

It's cultural appropriation

>tfw i'll never live in a world where Europe have been Buddhist for 2000 years and various forms of authentic European buddhism have arisen
>tfw i'll never listen to the chants of European Buddhist spirituality
>tfw i'll never read any great European Buddhist philosophers
>tfw i'll never gaze upon European Buddhist architecture
>tfw i'll never go to the mountains of Switzerland and visit the Dharmic Buddhist kingdom there
why even live? I'm stuck here with nothing but the results of a 2000 year old Christian history

>He has certain ideas that I don't completely agree
Such as?

>"Buddhism is not original, Buddhism is not distinct, there is absolutely nothing original in Buddhism that can't be found in the Upanishads and everything before it, in the various branches of the Vedas"
Where in the Upanishads are the Four Noble Truths, the Three Marks of Existence, the Noble Eightfold Path, the 12 Nidanas/Dependent Origination, and the Five Aggregates?

Not him but he's used the word "eternal" to refer to Nibbāna before which is a big red flag. He also emphasizes meditation almost to the exclusion of studying and comprehending the Dhamma on a textual/conceptual level to his Western students. He's also a hardcore Theravadin, who agrees with the revisionist and fallible Abhidhamma and Visuddhimagga (with such absurd teachings as "mind-moments"...etc).

bait but Buddhism is a universalist religion, and the guy OP linked to trained in Thailand and Sri Lanka for like a decade before moving back to the West to teach.

>it's the "eternal citta" argument again
This is such a tired meme. Citta does not refer to the eternal Atman, it is a casual catch-all word for "mind" with some emphasis on heart (as in "he put his whole heart into it"). The Buddha used casual lay words all the time (ex: sankharas, meaning preparations, which at the time would be used to say "I have prepared a meal for you").

>Nāmarūpa-samudayā cittassa samudayo.
>Nāmarūpa-nirodhā cittassa atthagamo.
>From the origination of name-and-form is the origination of the mind.
>From the cessation of name-and-form is the cessation of the citta (mind).
- SN 47.42
Weird that something supposedly eternal and immutable would both arise with the aggregates and cease with them.

Honestly, that sounds amazing.

Gautama. 'Ate 'im.

No it's not, don't be lazy.

they aren't, it's just some retarded hinduboo talking out of his ass

You're such a fag dude lmao

based

Uhh in what other religions is God born into history to die for our sins?

why live

Before this gets outta hand, reminder that there's 2 Christian threads right now

Good thing Buddhism is a universalist religion.
Read the Milindapanha
Read Nāgārjuna
Read Āryadeva
Read the Pali Canon
Especially read the Majjhima Nikaya and the Sutta Nipata
Read Ven. Kaṭukurunde Ñāṇananda Maha Thera

>Read Nāgārjuna
yikes

Attached: MMK.png (1297x2377, 359K)

Reminder that Buddha was nordic and was reincarnated in Hermann Hesse.

The point is that the Buddha did what the Greeks did and stated that there is no God to worship and that material experience is the only thing that is verifiable.

just live a materialistic life and it won't seem so bad

.

yeah but guy in video is just a jew that hates himself and is too conceited to follow his own religion

Hey fuck you, I was the one who came up with this sort of shitpost. Stop stealing my ideas.

Wow, I can't believe I once fell for the Nagarjuna meme when I first read the mmk.
