The book to end all other books
The book to end all other books
I've read it. It's mostly repeated pessimistic shit and 'thing-in-itself' phrases over and over gain. I advise anyone who wants to read it (not like there's a big public for Schopenhauer) to skip all of that garbage and consider reading the parts about aesthetics, art and/or ethics at most.
mainlander
If Schope ever had sex he would have written "The World as Chill and Recreation" instead.
Instead he was an incel loser who pushed women down stairs
retards
>pessimistic shit
WAHHHH IT'S NOT POSITIVE GO GET EM SON FEEL GOOD BULLSHIT THAT MAKES ME FEEL LIKE THERE'S A SOLUTION AND A GAME TO WIN SO IT'S BAD!!!!
>ad hominem
You can't deny it, Schopenhauer is an irrelevant philosopher generally speaking.
>World as Chill and Recreation
Audible kek. But I love the book so kys
>Schopenhauer is an irrelevant philosopher generally speaking
Not because he's wrong, but because most people are plebs who don't like any philosophy that isn't optimistic, like you.
Tell me one thing you loved about it.
the cover
He himself may be irrelevant. But he heavily influenced Nietzsche, Wagner, Freud, Hesse and many more
>he influenced a bunch of other irrelevant people
If you really think they are irrelevant, especially Nietzsche and Freud you are beyond retarded
Tell me which of their ideas are relevant and why so.
Nietzsche completely changed philosophy and you cannont name one philosopher of the 20th century who did not discuss his ideas. He also basically was the first existentialist.
Jung basically founded modern psychology, his Psychoanalysis is still used today.
Without Wagner Hitler would not have been so autistic
Also Schope made Buddhism viable in western society
>my feelings got hurt and no ad-hominens are gonna change that!
faggot
go back.
I asked which of their ideas are relevant in themselves, not why you consider the writers themselves are relevant based on arbitrary criteria and historical influence.
You didn't mention Jung in the post I quoted, did you mean to say Freud?
didn't he contract a STD?
Yes I meant Freud.
All his ideas of Psychoanalysis still are relevant today.
The idea of Schope that ambition and will can be the cause of suffering was a new and influencing idea to western society.
The idea of Schope that world also will, expanding German idealism.
This heavily influenced Nietzsche whos idea of the will to power was a now better formulated archetype of human progression.
The idea of the human soul having many aspects based on instincts, ideal and so on was an idea formulated by Freud that heavily influenced who we looked at the human psyche.
The idea of the Übermensch by Neech influenced many people and societies, for good or for worse.
he had sex and 2 kids
The entire book. And Volume II. There isn’t a chapter in it that isn’t useful
He influenced Neitszche, Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein. As well as Mainlander, Schrodinger and Wagner. Darwin basically got his idea of Evolution from tge Chapter “Life of the Species” in volume 2, and Einsteins relativity is built off Kant and Schopenhauers views on soace and time not being fixed quantities. Anyone who says “Schopenhauer isnt relevant” is the kind of pop-philosophy idiot who only watches chrash course philosophy which doesn’t include Schopie because he said mean things about women. These people then read Jordan Peterson books who is relevant because his book is on the top 10 national bestsellers, like the idiot in this thread
He had plenty of sex. Just not with his oneitis.
Source on that?
Although that translation has a glaring error in the title itself.
Re-presentation is inaccurate, because the idea isn't "represented'—it is presented.
Represent definition: to present to the mind; place clearly before or picture to the mind
Yeah it actually makes perfect sense
When plebs read philosophy
But Schoppy means the initial image, its presentation, not what our minds represent to ourselves upon seeing the presentation.
i can always tell when someone hasn't read Schopenhauer, they just repeat cliches about him and can't even sum up a single idea of his in their own words.
Prove you read the book and explain what "Ideas" are, in the Schopenhauerian sense of the word.
only pleb brainlets think schopenhauer is pessimistic.
how important is understanding the critique of reason before i read this shit?
i'm reading it currently. It's god tier, it's like someone took all my current ideas about the world, and developed them with a mind that's 100x as advanced as my own.
I feel like I literally mentally matured 5-10 years after reading it
Schopenhauer was nothing more than an atomist wrapped in a fancy German language. The only reason as to why he even used terms as 'will' and 'representation' was that his life ended before the advent of physics and biology/neuroscience. If he were to live in our days, he would describe humans as nothing more than 'biochemical puppets' because, I repeat myself, Schopenhauer believed in absolutely no metaphysical plane of 'being'. Feel free to provide any passages that you think imply the idea that Schopenhauer was absolutely not like I describe him to be.
>it's like someone took all my current ideas about the world
can you name a few?
I won't get memed into reading Schopenhauer. Go away.
I'm mostly into his ideas about the will as a sort of subconscious process that drives the world. I've always felt there was some subconscious drive that is making me yearn for some abstract construct inside my mind. It's this abstract drive that has made me move forward at the most important moments in my life.
I also like how he ties it to music, saying that music is a sort of auditory playing out of this will. The sound has no meaning in itself, yet it stirs up this abstract yearning to move forward, to attain something beyond this current reality you find yourself in.
music, since it passes over the
Ideas, is also quite independent of the phenomenal world, positively
ignores it, and, to a certain extent, could still exist even if there
were no world at all, which cannot be said of the other arts. Thus
music is as immediate an objectification and copy of the whole will
as the world itself is, indeed as the Ideas are, the multiplied phenomenon of which constitutes the world of individual things. Therefore music is by no means like the other arts, namely a copy of the
Ideas, but a copy of the will itself, the objectivity of which are the
Ideas. For this reason the effect of music is so very much more
powerful and penetrating than is that of the other arts, for these
others speak only of the shadow, but music of the essence.
However, as it is the same will that objectifies itself both in the
Ideas and in music, though in quite a different way in each, there must be, not indeed an absolutely direct likeness, but yet a parallel,
an analogy, between music and the Ideas, the phenomenon of
which in plurality and in incompleteness is the visible world. The
demonstration of this analogy will make easier, as an illustration, an
understanding of this explanation, which is difficult because of the
obscurity of the subject.
R E T A R D S. Retards.
Instead of throwing around insults like a subhuman would you mind actually supporting your statements?
There is no need for supporting my statement.
Once an user has been deemed as a retard by the community which here is the case, this user's opinions are to be discarded immediately without discussion. We do not ask babies either whether or not they want to sleep now.
So this is the argumentative prowess of Schopenhauer's apostles.
Have sex, incels
the last sentence was not necessary, since it introduces the next part, but whatever, it's still a nice passage
Have sex, incel.
I advise anyone who has read Schopenhauer to never look at Schopenhauer threads on Yea Forums or atleast take them seriously, its very obvious no one here has read shit.
Absolute dogshit.
yep
i really did read at least the second part of the book, on the arts, and music especially. Mostly because I'm a musician, and I love thinking about the metaphysics of musical structure. But I agree many people hop into a discussion without any knowledge on the author and their work
If you are a musician you might adore Florentine Nights by Heine, he magnificently describes Paganini in the first part of the book.
He influenced Nietzsche to completely clown the nihilism presented in his work.
Schopenhauer stated explicitly that atoms do not exist
ya dingus
>The World as Chill and Recreation
kek
>dude nihlism lmao
Kys
But you will get memed into reading “Infinite Jest” right?
never read it but people say he is reasonably self contained and says the same thing a lot in different ways so you end up understanding it without much problem
>transcends nihilism
>love life fully
>nihilist wants you dead
do not post in my thread, faggot
cumtown tier
Just writing to let you know I love you and though it looks like your efforts are wasted here I appreciate that there are some others there who recognize truth. Schopenhauer is great and after all the truth he laid out it is no coincidence that the few great philosophers after him, Nietzsche and Wittgenstein—the former who filled in the work with colors and turned pessimism to optimism, and the latter who recognized something about taking the next leap— came to the conclusions they did.
wut
Now hold on a minute I thought that was Stirner
You're welcome
fixed it
whys it so damn big
