Yeah this. It's not just a new reader's entry into Pynchon's catalogue, it was his own. He develops the ideas in TCoL49 in his later, longer books.

It’s about the lack of control that we, everyday citizens, have over our lives. Each character is discontented with their lives in some way, and they all seem to suffer from some version of the same paranoia. Asking what is the point? Who is running the show? Some of the only characters who seem truly happy are The Paranoids, who are perfectly content with following the trends and only desire to be exactly like the popular British musicians. The conspiracy, in the end, is left unsolved. We never get an answer because the powers that be do not need us to know anything
