Do any of you use writing programs? If so, got any recommendations? Nothing too fancy, just something that functions well. Also, what's your experience with them?

No. But when I was young I used Scrivener and it was wonderful. Nothing extraneous, all very useful and thoughtful tools that are accessible.

Google docs/Word

I learned you can use styles to make a navigation menu in word to emulate scrivener. What other features does it have so I can make word do it’s fuckin job?

Well I’m not a web designer so excuse my noobery, but Scrivener does lots of things that Word couldn’t possibly emulate, because Word is all centered on a single page with ribbon options. Scrivener is a package program with depth, meaning it navigates more like a website than Word (again, best way I can put it). They’re not similar at all.

Notepad++ because I am not a mongoloid

So then something like onenote can do things scriv does?

I’d never heard of it, but with a cursory glance I’m leaning towards no. It looks like onenote has a couple nonwriting related cutesy features like drawing, but not the actual heft or literary focus of Scrivener.
Here’s a break down of what Scrivener does literatureandlatte.com/scrivener/features?os=Windows

notepad.exe

LaTeX is unbeatable once you know how to "program" it.

Otherwise, just use any notepad because it does the job and launches faster than any fancy program.

Vim

What do you do in a word processor other than straight up writing your story? Wouldn’t you just use a notebook for notes before you type?

The only good excuse to avoid notepads is when you have a lot of footnotes to insert (because you're writing non-fiction), and you want to do it right now because it's a chore to do it later.

Groff on linux

I use Typora for most of my writing which is usually for todo-lists or condensed versions of study books so I can recap things faster. I've also used VS Code/ Notepad depending on the task and if it's really simple then they are sufficient. For a good writing experience try either LibreOffice/Google Docs/Word/Scrivener/Ulysses but do know that the last three are paid for products and are only worth it if you're doing some serious writing i.e. for a living.

What's the launch time of Scrivener? Is it slow like LibreOffice and the likes?

>People suggesting spyware and non-free software.
Absolutely disgusting.

>spyware
?

google docs. someone stole my pc once and i lost every single one of my short stories i made in word; not happening again

also, you can write anytime w/ your phone and it'll still be saved to the cloud. comfiest shit ever

>Implying google and its products are not the ultimate botnet.

About that, you can just use github to store your files remotely or some cloud provider that isn't Google/Microsoft, even Apple is rather secure compared to those two. But yeah learn how to preserve your files and make them desktop independent ASAP it's a mild inconvenience at first, but you'll be glad you did it.

You're right, I didn't see Google Docs mentioned desu

Writemonkey is nice, it uses markdown so it's decent at organizing a text as well.
