If you speak English books are literally free to download and you have access to all the great books with a few clicks of a button. Yet people still do not read. No retard everyone in a developed country goes through schooling where they are exposed to literature and encouraged to read. Very few of them actually read in their own free time, saying that it's "boring". Kids have 6 weeks free time all summer to read. Literacy rates are highest they've ever been. Yet very few read. It's IQ, not capitalism.

In this age of distraction, you pick on a group of grub drones in their off season? Their parents both working and raised under the same repressive system, you expect them all to find literature or excel in the sciences or something. Some do, but as I said in some other thread, the system takes them as a commodity and burns them out for profits often enough.

School actively discouraged me from reading by forcing me to read novels I wasn't mature enough to understand yet. I eventually wised up and reread the material years later but at the time it was "This is it? These are the supposed great, fundamental works of U.S. literature? These suck!"
I still don't like The Great Gatsby though, fuck that thing.

They had me read The Taming of the Shrew which imo is one of the shittiest Shakespeare plays. Years later I read Julius Caesar and I love Shakespeare now.

The only book school had me read that I loved was 1984, but that was in my senior year of high school but I already enjoyed reading thanks to genre fiction.

It's not a matter of need, it's a matter of want. People don't read because they lack motivation, not opportunity. Of the 4+ hours a day that they waste in social media or entertainment they do not devote one hour, not even five or ten minutes, to reading or edification. It's because they are offered too much choice and too easy a path to leisure, not too difficult, that they don't read.

That's how the system works. Reading is a burden for society, as it keeps you away from consuming. Why keep yourself busy a week with a book when you can watch dozens of movies instead? Or play videogames or do any other mindless activity. So it is, unironically, capitalism's fault. With this I'm not saying that it would be different if we were commies.
