Is the art of debating dead or was it romanticized all along?

Liberal idea of debate:
>you're not convinced by my screeching or appeals to emotion?
>fine, you're going on ignore.
>i win.

...

Debate is not a rational activity, it's purely persuasion and hypnotism. A debate is always won by deception and misdirection, never by being right. It's a very female activity.

Destiny has singlehandedly saves debating as a medium.

That's really dependent on your audience. If you're surrounded by people that expect actual arguments then behaving that way will just get you ridiculed.

It's been dead since socrates.

"Debating" is more rhetoricians casting out nets to catch the minds of the viewers than anything else. They're structured as "win/loss" arguments when in reality they should always feature both parties coming away with more knowledge on the topic.

This will likely never become commonplace, because we live in a society of spectacle.

Impassioned conversation with fellow humans is one the few remaining joys in my life. Be polite and find a rhythm, and nothing will be more rewarding. It's a true shame that people are generally uncomfortable or defensive in serious conversations. If you find someone who enjoys these conversations and can give and take, don't let him go.

>politics has nothing to do with debate

Our definition of debate is definitely not what it used to be. The word for now should be left to place will clearer winners or victors, like court rooms and such. The idea of victory through outdoing logic is a terrible way to conduct discussion and is only truly bought by children that are learning to think criticall for the first time in their lives.

Debate is merely sophistry and rhetoric and I’ve never respected debate ever. The only respectable form of dialogue is a one on one dialogue preferably through written word

Debate is a flawed concept. It does not measure the validity of ideas, it is a public speaking competition.

Romanticized all along, there's a reason "appeal to cudgel" exists.

Destiny is like a weaker Ben Shapiro from the other end of the political spectrum. And I don't even like Shapiro.

One on one dialogue through speech is best, but the next best thing is through letters and snail mail. Both sides have adequate time to research their topic and write adequate responses to each other.
