Diary of a madman, picture by Gogol

Hunger by Knut Hamsun.

just hear to say that I love that album so god damn much

my dairy DESU AAAAAAAAAA

I think it's translated as The Portrait, not "Picture".
And yeah, the Diary is a classic in this regard. Dosto's "Bobok" and "Dream of a Ridiculous Man" are similar and also recommendable.

diary of captain to tera nova expedition, not so much as going mad though you can see how things start off going well and progressively gets worse until everyone is dead, you can see his handwriting decline as the trip goes on as well up to his final entry

men had given up requesting to be left behind to die, one left them all and wandered into the snowy night and was never seen again iirc, so its not farfetched to think some may have gone mad, like that guy probably did, but I dont think the captain describes any of his men using that word, its a good read though

Diary of a Madman by Lu Xun

>Dream of a Ridiculous Man
I've read that, why do you think it's relevant to the thread?

The later books in ASOIAF has a specific main character slowly going mad. You’d have to read thousands of pages to get there and wait 10+ years n hope he finishes them

Roadwork by Richard Bachman. (Turner Overdrive).

All of them when taken together

It's about a ridiculous/insane man. It doesn't have the gradual loss of reason, though.

The gambler probably fits too since he looses his reason true the book.

A Scanner Darkly, Phillip K Dick

The Black Monk by Chekov

Part 4 of Gulliver's Travels sees the main character return and acclimate to society, not at all what you asked for but it's one of the greatest things I've ever read and everyone thinks he's mad so it can count idk
