The problem is that our legal system has so defined capitalism as holding short term profits for shareholders above any other act (ford v dodge) that there is no room for the capitalist system to grow or change that doesn’t destroy the human condition. I think mixing and mastering is a delicate balance for many bands who are unaware of their recorded potential, but if you don’t have a good engineer you’ll never hear what it could be. Most bands though don’t really respect the profession or what those people do. There’s a certain level of innate gift mixed with years of training to make mixing or mastering work right. I think the dissemination of software to the masses has hurt the overall top quality of the industry, but allowed so many more bands to become successful without that barrier to entry. Many of the sound engineers I know are assholes, but there’s an almost autistic quality to their character so it makes sense.
