Opinions on Light Novels?

I read this recently and thought it was good. Definitely the best in regards to light novels from Japan, and I wanted to know what Yea Forums thinks about light novels in general and if they are pleb filter. I wouldn’t mind some recommendations either.

Welcome to the NHK

What is the difference between a light novel and a normal novel?

A light novel is a type of Japanese novel that primarily targets teens and young adults. A novel however, is just you standard book that contains a relatively long work of narrative fiction.

I think Light Novels are generally pretty alright. Even the most generic isekai stories are still more interesting than a lot of western YA (Atleast I think so.) Boogiepop, Monogatari, and Toradora are some of the best ones. Nekomogatari (black) in particular is pretty good. That's where Nisio really goes batshit with the meta.

Pluto
Goodnight Punpun
Nausicaä

So it's J-YA?

They're pretty entertaining atleast but it's hard to find a light novel that really sticks to me. Most of the time, I lose interest reading ongoing light novels even if I really like it before. For recommendations, Boogiepop and Kino no Tabi is a good read.

The most iconic light novel, from a Japanese otaku's standpoint, is Zaregoto's 2nd volume. Read these two before you move on to anything else in here. You'll see its influence everywhere.
It's the debut series of Nisioisin.

so a pulp novel then

The average LN is strictly superior to the average Western YA in entertainment factor.
They're also great for bridging the gap between manga and regular novels when learning Japanese.
That being said you'd be pretty dumb to read them expecting wisdom or life changing perspective or whatever

So the best light novel would be on par with something like Harry Potter or The Outsiders?

LNs rely on illustrations to sell dude
Theyll never be good

Much like comics and movies.

I read more of them and VNs a while back than I'd openly admit, mostly because they're usually written in a very simple way that's easy to grasp for someone who's just started reading in japanese.
They're very entertaining but the incestuous and self-referential nature of otaku culture makes it hard not to get a bit tired if you read a lot of them in a row.
based retard

They're terrible. That said I love them because they let my vicariously fill my pathetic desire for a qt anime gf. FUCK ME what do I have to do to get someone with the personality of a qt anime girl I'm so lonely

Yes, exactly this.

I binged Light novel for a year or two, in hindsight the only good one I read was "Overlord".

Overlord is more like a regular fantasy novel to be fair

I read the first one and thought it was a solid 5/10. Is the second notably better?

Jorge Joestar is miles better.

Yeah

someone collate this information into chart form
