>There is a strange idea abroad that in every subject the ancient books should be read only by the professionals, and that the amateur should content himself with the modern books. Thus I have found as a tutor in English Literature that if the average student wants to find out something about Platonism, the very last thing he thinks of doing is to take a translation of Plato off the library shelf and read the Symposium. He would rather read some dreary modern book ten times as long, all about “isms” and influences and only once in twelve pages telling him what Plato actually said.

>The error is rather an amiable one, for it springs from humility. The student is half afraid to meet one of the great philosophers face to face. He feels himself inadequate and thinks he will not understand him. But if he only knew, the great man, just because of his greatness, is much more intelligible than his modern commentator.

>The simplest student will be able to understand, if not all, yet a very great deal of what Plato said; but hardly anyone can understand some modern books on Platonism. It has always therefore been one of my main endeavours as a teacher to persuade the young that firsthand knowledge is not only more worth acquiring than secondhand knowledge, but is usually much easier and more delightful to acquire.

What do you mean by this? The woman in this image seems to keep her body in shape, and I believe it is safe to say that those who keep their bodies fit are the only ones who can appreciate literature.

The real question to ask is why she pissed herself uwu

Poetry was a subject in German schools until the late 19th century until they realized that it was a skill that cannot be learned but was innate.
My guess is they were right and the same thing goes for telling stories/writing.
On the other hand I think appreciating is something anyone can do.

god i wish that were me

Who wrote that?

no

>jezebel poster

I want to be that stain on her pants

No, just an English speaker. If it's hard, get a dictionary and take your time

She looks like she's on a strict cake and ice cream regimen.

believe me, it's not that great

reminder that CS Lewis read every single work of English literature from the medieval and Renaissance periods and was the preeminent expert on 16th century brit lit during his academic career

Obviously not

have sex, then you will understand

You're right about cake bro

Absolutely not.

Don't do it in a vacuum though. Meet other writers. Share your work. Use MOOCs to learn about lit.

She seems ... thirsty

There are 4 people. The girl is standing, the foremost guy is being held up by the girl, and the other legs on the ground belong to another guy who is helping the girl keep the foremost guy off the groun. The kid in the back is not showing his legs

George Saunders is one of my favorite contemporary authors. He has a BS from the Colorado School of Mines.

comfy

I'm going to be an english major because I couldn't get into film school and don't want to do anything else with my life. probably going to spend 4 years hiding in my room reading Celine, not very different from what I would do without a degree but with less wageslavery desu, I got in by spewing bullshit about Beckett and Kafka non-stop verbal diarrhea something like 20min to the prof and I sucked her cock vigorously licking her shaft up and down as I jerked off all the writers she liked hehe I don't even like Beckett hehe the other day I was talking to some beautiful girls at my job and I was making them laugh etc when they asked me what I was majoring in I told them and I sensed their pussies grow dry as the Sahara desert hehe

Just read and write as much as you can. Writing is like body building, anyone can do it, but your inheritance only gets you so far.

>those who keep their bodies fit are the only ones who can appreciate literature.
How do you explain H.Bloom then?

>couldn't get into film school
What? Don't they just take anyone who pays? Unless you were trying to get into AFI or some shit

No one cares that you did/didn't go to study literature academically dude, have some self-respect

based

There are three people, the girl is holding the guy and the back and the foremost guy is leaning over his body.

Haha what if you woke up one morning and you were transformed into her panties
