Modern myths

Do you think it's possible for myths and legends to arise in a world as well documented as ours is now? Do you think its possible that in 4000 years or so (assuming humans are still here) humans will have myths about our current times as vivid and interesting as the Greeks and Romans had?

no, and no

Yes.
See: fake news

You think there'll be so much information that it'll be impossible to tell what was accurate and what wasn't?

I'd anyone actually storing all of this information in a systematic way? I mean there's shitloads of TV that has been lost forever because nobody thought to archive it. What about ensuring compatability of file types (although I'm sure some fuck will still be running xp in the year 3892) over hundreds of thousands of years.

When primitive men walk among the ruins of our mega cities and skyscrapers even 1000 years from now they will wonder why we bothered with it all.

Mythology needs a sense of mystery in the world. Our society is so geared towards the scientific mindset now that such a feeling is dead. We like to think we understand more about the world now, yet all it has caused is a depressing feeling of emptiness and isolation in the world.

For instance, the scientific view on reproduction and the naturalistic worldview that comes along with that is unbelievably depressing. It asserts we live to perpetuate our genes, but as soon as you ponder why this is the case you spiral downwards into your existential angst as you suddenly feel incredibly disconnected from the world. This is the curse of people with the intellect to be able to extrapolate and perceive their existence from without themselves. Animals and idiots do not experience this questioning of why they do what they do, they just do.

>Mythology needs a sense of mystery in the world. Our society is so geared towards the scientific mindset now that such a feeling is dead.
i always wonder wether that is the reason tao lin has spiraled from common quirky sperger navelgazing into psychedelics- and conspiracy theory fueled navelgazing

>mythology will be created by crackpots and retards who don't understand how things work

Fucking hell, can you imagine what the myths that chemtrail retards will help to propagate will look like

We have the makings for more myths everyday, and the rate of increase only goes up as more of our data is recorded and archived. History is mythology fuck nut

Nice meme
The preface of Capital was surprisingly entertaining

With blockchain, we may know a priori that information written into the block chain was an historically accurate chain of signifiers, but that's about it.

Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise?

Marvel === Greek mythology

Nobody believes anything with enough sincerity anymore to allow for the spread of contemporary myth.

Well yes, but, I'm talking about the small myths I remember we made up as kids.Myths of bigfoot, ghosts and aliens

Amerikkka was founded on many myths, most of which had deadly consequences for the world.

There are myths right now on a period of time that happened only 75 years ago, I don't think myths are going anywhere user rest assured.

Well people do believe the Jews are behind everything, so...

Nobody takes those people seriously.

Capeshit is everywhere.

Yes. Just to use Yea Forums as an example some girls killed their friend because of slenderman. Skinwalkers are also a /k/x/ invention, the tenuous native american connection came after retards googled the word and came screetching in going WELL AKSHYUALLY and lead to talks about calling them "fleshgaits" or whatever that never stuck and now some 7 years later people talk about muh natives even though some of the first stories took place in australia and they didn't share any characteristics with le epic furry tribal drug witch at all.

Interesting way to only half bait the hook.

Then why have there been so many expulsions?

This. Greek mythology is literally just ancient capeshit

money

Some of the heroic myths might have a superficial resemblance to modern superheroes but otherwise not at all.

The myth of progress is alive and well.

Yes. Ted Kaczynski is a legend.

Myths involving men and gods that are spun to instill virtue in the youth? No, those days are long over. Every single story nowadays is created for the purpose to be a lucrative merchandising opportunity. Virtue can't be bought.

There’ll be plenty of myth making in the next war

There are plenty of myths in modern times. Myth of the dark ages comes to mind.

yes
some modern myths: freedom, democracy, happiness, work, science

this. progress is a myth.

it's alive but it's certainly not well

This is not scientific. It is a purely interpretative statement.
Saying we 'pass out genes' is indeed a common interpretation today, but it is not scientific or unscientific.

An ancient Greek prophecy is being fulfilled before our eyes. Apollo, the god of Science, having formed a palace conspiracy with his half-brother Hermes, god of Politics, and his uncle Plutos, god of Adoney, has emasculated Almighty Zeus with the same curved sickle, laid up at Sicilian Drepana, that Zeus used on his father Cronus. Zeus still remains propped on his throne, but a Regency Council of Three has taken over his powers. In this new anarchical era anything may happen. That the Divine Triumvirate are suspicious of one another, and that their rival ambitions have made them careless of mankind, was proved by the absurd cold war that was (is?) being waged between East and West, with the massive resources of Science, Money, and Politics. They have cut civilization loose from its moorings: familiar coasts of orthodox religion, philosophy, and economics fade in the dusky distance. Crazy new cults are preached, old ones revived; ghosts supposedly laid centuries ago creep out of their graves, not only at dusk but by broad daylight.

Of course. People still unironically believe in the "hard work" meme and the "equality before the law" meme. They're not as cool as the Greek and Roman stuff but just as ridiculous.

It was much more than that. First and foremost it was the recognition of the influence and dominance of the physical world (sun, earth, winds, rains etc.) on our lives.

progress

2000 years from now we will look back on how George Washington fought mecha hitler with a zweihander. History is a joke.
