Just finished this. It's just a comfy book about the clash between two generations of landed gentry, with the key conflict being the friction between the nihilism of the central character Bazarov and the various other characters of the novel (the romanticism of a middle-aged bachelor, the liberal pretenses of a reform-minded landholder, the love of an equally aloof woman, etc.).
I'd also recommend it. Notes of family orientation solving existential dilemmas smacked of Levin in Anna Karenina. There were funny moments, especially the duel scene. And Bazarov is a good representation of an archetypical nihilist, one who won't allow himself to be a hypocrite.

Good stuff, but these letters are good also - when they get forced to make accommodations against their own previous beliefs after sharing space with one of their subjects. The turnaround is quite honest and humbling.

Thanks, I couldn't view the other link. I'm Johnson fan, so I would totally read the letters. I checked some of his journals out from my university library a little while back. Insightful, but fraught with melancholy.
