Artificial sapience, you mean. But you're mostly correct. We could conceivably make a sapience out of artificial materials, no reason to privilege the organic, but at that point why would we not simply modify ourselves biologically? We have the template already. We would be reinventing what we should be augmenting. As far as AI becoming sapient, that's impossible unless you write willing into it, accompanied by weakness, fault, emotion, etc. and undermine the very point of the tool which is the pure logical intelligence.
