You should know that historically it wasn't considered his greatest work. This idea that The Republic is Plato's great masterpiece is a modern invention.

This + symposium would be a good precursor. As said it's extremely easy to afford only a cursory reading to plato and feel like you have fully understood the text. Having some practice at close reading the dialogical format will only enhance your first reading of Republic.
