AND EMILY I SAW YOU LAST NIGHT BY THE RIVER

I like her brapper if you comprehend my implied notion

They are. Dylan is a hack imho, and Cohen is a master of a very different style to hers.

have one on me is good

Hey.
Music is discussed on Yea Forums you kno' ?

>Dylan is a hack imho,
Why

lyrics are writing retard

He's a kike, what the fuck do you even mean?

tfw she married a new york jew

FUCK

Why does being a Jew mean his lyrics are hackery? Be specific now, I know you've thought about this a great deal.

Lyrics aren't literature you mongoloid.
If the only requirement was being written, your birth certificate would be literature .

Yea Forums is for the discussion of literature, specifically books (fiction & non-fiction), short stories, poetry, creative writing, etc.

>discussion of literature, specifically books (fiction & non-fiction)
Not lyrics
>short stories
Not Lyrics
>poetry
Not lyrics
>creative writing
That's a stretch .

Music lyrics beling more on mu than here no matter how you look at it.

>Bob Dylan lyric taken from Billboard article of his most beautiful lyrics, written right after he won the lit nobel.
People tell me it's a sin
To know and feel too much within
I still believe she was my twin
But I lost the ring
She was born in spring
But I was born too late
Blame it on a simple twist of fate

>Joanna Newsom lyrics
And they will recognize
All the lines of your face
In the face of the daughter, of the daughter, of my daughter
And darling we will be fine
But what was yours and mine
Appears to me a sandcastle that the gibbering wave takes
But if it's all just the same
Then will you say my name
Say my name in the morning so that I know when the wave breaks
I wasn't born of a whistle
Or milked from a thistle at twilight
No, I was all horns and thorns
Sprung out fully formed, knock-kneed and upright
So enough of this terror we deserve to know light
And grow evermore lighter and lighter
You would have seen me through
But I could not undo that desire

Thanks for posting a bunch of lyrics. Do you gave anything to say about them or did you post them for no reason?

the people on Yea Forums dont read though

>Dylan: Great lyrics with interesting use of rhyming couplets
>Newsom: Second-rate poetry set to music so it seems more interesting than it actually is

Of course not they listen to music.
Sound and spoken words.
Lyrics on their own are mediocre poetry at best.
As I said it's not worth discussing lyrics here in my opinion.

>Joanna Newsom lyrics
I killed my dinner with karate -
kick 'em in the face, taste the body;
shallow work is the work that I do.

>Bob Dylan
Darkness at the break of noon
Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child's balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying
Pointed threats, they bluff with scorn
Suicide remarks are torn
From the fool's gold mouthpiece
The hollow horn plays wasted words
Proves to warn that he not busy being born
Is busy dying

>Lyrics on their own are mediocre poetry
wait so your admitting they are literature

>Of course not they listen to music.
but they couldn't critique lyrics in the context of poetry

It's alright ma is one if the very few lyrics that work just as well on the page as set to music. Extremely impressive

You forgot "at best".
See the irony in my statement.

Of course not, they are not meant to, lyrics are sung and they go with music.
Nobody would read lyrics on their own, it isn't worth it.
Lyrics have any value only in the context of the song.
For this reason they should be discussed on mu

Yea Forums doesn't talk about lyrics. They hardly talk about music.
Vapid critique.
Newsoms lyrics have always been whimsical. Dylan is a good lyricist, but I think he's an extremely mediocre songwriter and it pisses me off that he won the nobel literature prize. So many more deserving people than that fuck.

Neither does lit if that's your point.
We barely discuss legit poetry anymore, I can't see how anybody would care about music lyrics.
Even if we discussed it in the context of the song that would be offtopic.

My only point was that Yea Forums is a garbage board. However I will also say that I definitely don't agree that lyrics can't be poetry. Not all lyrics are poetry but some certainly are. I mean just look at and the Bob Dylan lyrics posted and tell me they aren't. Most people agree that literature is not bound to the written form, and if it was you would have to exclude The Odyssey (among other things) from the discussion of literature because its original form was a performance, told by a person over a couple days. Writing it down was an afterthought.

Agreed

Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a gypsy queen
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle all dressed in green
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle ’til the moon is blue
Wiggle ’til the moon sees you
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle in your boots and shoes
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, you got nothing to lose
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a swarm of bees
Wiggle on your hands and knees
Wiggle to the front, wiggle to the rear
Wiggle ’til you wiggle right out of here
Wiggle ’til it opens, wiggle ’til it shuts
Wiggle ’til it bites, wiggle ’til it cuts
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a bowl of soup
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a rolling hoop
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a ton of lead
Wiggle—you can raise the dead
Wiggle ’til you’re high, wiggle ’til you’re higher
Wiggle ’til you vomit fire
Wiggle ’til it whispers, wiggle ’til it hums
Wiggle ’til it answers, wiggle ’til it comes
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like satin and silk
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle like a pail of milk
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, rattle and shake
Wiggle like a big fat snake
>Nobel Literature Prize winner Bob Dylan

Retard

Comparing modern music to an epic poem like the Odyssey is ludicrous.
Didn't you grin a bit while writing this ?

The Homeric poems are the collective effort of a Civilization. The stratification of the wit and experience of many poets, later brought together and stitched in a literary monolith .
Modern music and lyrics are uninspired coughs of mediocre individuals.

What, the guy I'm replying to gets to compare Newsoms worst with Dylan's best and I don't get to do the same?
So what you seem to be arguing is that something has to be of high quality to be literature, which I completely disagree with and think that literature becomes a nearly useless term if you exclude things you don't like. Did I not make my point clear with bringing up The Odyssey? I was saying that something does not originally have to take the form of writing to be literature. Oral traditions are part of literature. Lyrics in songs are included in this.

these lyrics are based though

Literature, most generically, is any body of written works.
Its Latin root literatura/litteratura (derived itself from littera: letter or handwriting) was used to refer to all written accounts.

Are lyrics not written?
Based xD

I want to pipe her, Pj Harvey and Patti Smith

She's extremely fucking good

The Odyssey is fucking stupid though

They are not for reading

Shame her voice is of a dying giraffe.

One could make a claim that The Odyssey is not for reading. Or Shakespeare. They are literature regardless.
I jerk off to the squeaks (and her ass). Her music being high quality makes it even better.

Bob Dylan: Worse Than Women

>thread keeps mentioning ass
>NOT 1 pic

Of course it is.
The Odyssey is an epic poem and Shakespeare wrote plays.
Two literary genres.

Music doesn't

tfw Ishiguro's lyrics are better than Dylan's.

>So here you are in this city
>With a shattered heart, it seems
>Though when you arrived you thought you'd have
>The holiday of your dreams
>You'd cry yourself to sleep if you could
>But you've been awake all night
>Well here's something that you need to do
>At the first hint of morning light

>Walk right across the deserted city
>To the Boulevard Amsterdam
>And wait there
>For what the citizens here
>Refer to as the Breakfast Tram

>Climb on board
>You'll soon manage
>To find at the far end of the carriage
>The most wonderful buffet
>There's everything you'd want to eat
>You can take a feast back to your seat
>Whatever you can fit onto your tray
>And the mist on the windows will start to fade
>As the sun climbs higher in the sky
>And you can sit back with your café au lait
>While outside the waking city clatters by
>So things didn't quite meet expectations
>But you're bound to conclude upon reflection
>There's no reason you should give a damn
>Just treat yourself
>To a cinnamon pancake
>Very soon you'll forget your heartache
>When you have breakfast on the morning tram

>It'll be quite quiet when you first get on
>But as that tram keeps moving along
>It'll fill with people starting on their day
>They'll be laughing and joking as they eat
>They'll be passing plates along the seats
>Your night of heartache will soon seem far away
>And even though you're a stranger
>They'll make you feel
>Right at home

>They'll be offering to refill your coffee
>They won't have you sitting there alone
>They've seen many others just like you
>And each one of them has had it happen too
>So just enjoy your scrambled eggs and ham
>Treat yourself
>To a cinnamon pancake
>Very soon you'll forget your heartache
>When you have breakfast on the morning tram

>And even though you're a stranger
>They'll make you feel
>Right at home
>They'll be offering to refill your coffee
>They won't have you sitting there alone
>'Cause they've seen many others just like you
>And each one of them has had it happen too
>So just enjoy your fresh croissant and jam
>And don't neglect the Belgian waffles
>You'll soon forget your troubles
>When you have breakfast on the morning tram

user I would love to spoon feed you in this particular case but unfortunately I am phone posting from work and this IP is banned from posting pictures for some reason. Google Joanna Newsom ass and you'll find what you're looking for.
You're retarded and I'm done trying to explain this to a brick.
>music doesnt
Doesn't what, retard?
Any recommendations? Haven't listened to anything by Ishiguro.

>Any recommendations? Haven't listened to anything by Ishiguro.

So far as I know he's only written lyrics for a few Stacey Kent songs. Her album "Breakfast on the Morning Tram" has three of them ("Ice Hotel," "Wish I Could Go Traveling Again," "So Romantic," and the title track).

It's an enjoyable listen, though desu Samba Saravah and La Saison des Pluies are the best tracks on the album.

(FWIW, I just like to shit on Dylan's Nobel by pointing out that Ishiguro has also written lyrics).

>has three of them
four*

Have sex.

Music doesn' belong to literature you spastic.
I'm the one who tried his hardest to reason with you silly shit.
What do you even know human mulligan?
I'd have an easier time explain algebra to a corn cob.
Lyrics are not literature.
Lyrics are a part of music

Literature is written words meant to be read by people.

Lyrics are sung and go with music.
Nobody reads lyrics on their own.
It's a big waste of time reading them kind of like trying to explain you things.

>Music doesn' belong to literature you spastic.

That's not at all what he's saying, retard. kys.

>Only Skin
Stay with me for awhile
That’s an awfully real gun
I know life will lay you down
As the lightning has lately done
Failing this, failing this
Follow me, my sweetest friend
To see what you anointed
In pointing your gun there
Lay it down! Nice and slow!
There is nowhere to go

>North Country Blues
I lived by the window as he talked to himself
This silence of tongues it was building
'Till one morning's wake, the bed it was bare
And I was left alone with three children
The summer is gone, the ground's turning cold
The stores one by one they're all folding
My children will go as soon as they grow
Well, there ain't nothing here now to hold them

A lot of the best dylan songs are him singing as someone else. Joanna's best seems to be playing herself. i find both pretty kino. though anything can get overplayed

audio not having oral storytelling in there somewhere or even radio plays

CHILDREN please lets unremember the past and repeat it

Yet another thread full of retards who don't know poetry is supposed to be sung.

How will I show off what a pseud I am if I listen to Yea Forumscore shit?

>...that the meteorite is a source of the light
>and the meteor's just what we see
>and the meteoroid is a stone that's devoid

i really like that for some reason

No they don't.
Yea Forums is for the discussion of music and Yea Forums is for the discussion of words.

Reminder

Attached: newsomandjoyce.png (640x1146, 1.41M)

Her voice is like a piss-poor font ruining any remote chance of me enjoying literary content. A vile affront to my ears, akin to those horrible musicians whose hits have been injected into television series over the past six years.

bumn

this comparison doesn't make any sense

I'm a huge fan of Joanna Newsom and Leonard Cohen. In fact, I listened to some songs off of her Divers album today.

I'm finding it difficult to say that Cohen or Newsom is better than the other; but they are both better lyricists than Bob Dylan.

Are her lyrics really that good? yes. her first album seems intellectual for the sake of being intellectual (aka: pretentious), but I don't get that vibe from her later works. Here's an expert from her song Baby Birch:

We take a walk along the dirty lake
Hear the goose cussing
At me over her eggs
You poor little cousin
I don't want your dregs
A little baby fussing over my legs
There is a blacksmith
And there is a shepard
And there is a butcher boy
And there is a barber cutting away at my only joy
I saw a rabbit as slick as a knife
And as pale as a candlestick
And I had thought it would be harder to do
But I caught her and skinned her quick
Held her there kicking and mewling
Upended unspooling unsung and blue
Told her "wherever you go
Little runaway bunny I will find you"
And then she ran
As they're liable to do
Be at peace baby birch
And be gone
Be at peace baby birch
And be gone

yes, in the sense that Divers is her worst and Finn is also his worst, but also no, in the sense that Ys is her best but Portrait is not his best

and now here's the lyrics to Cohen's Joan of Arc:

Now the flames they followed joan of arc
As she came riding through the dark;
No moon to keep her armour bright,
No man to get her through this very smoky night.
She said, I'm tired of the war,
I want the kind of work I had before,
A wedding dress or something white
To wear upon my swollen appetite.

Well, I'm glad to hear you talk this way,
You know I've watched you riding every day
And something in me yearns to win
Such a cold and lonesome heroine.
And who are you? she sternly spoke
To the one beneath the smoke.
Why, I'm fire, he replied,
And I love your solitude, I love your pride.

Then fire, make your body cold,
I'm going to give you mine to hold,
Saying this she climbed inside
To be his one, to be his only bride.
And deep into his fiery heart
He took the dust of joan of arc,
And high above the wedding guests
He hung the ashes of her wedding dress.

It was deep into his fiery heart
He took the dust of joan of arc,
And then she clearly understood
If he was fire, oh then she must be wood.
I saw her wince, I saw her cry,
I saw the glory in her eye.
Myself I long for love and light,
But must it come so cruel, and oh so bright?

Divers is amazing.

Anyone else loving the new Weyes Blood album? I like the theme of Nolstalgia in a bunch of the songs. Very Fisheresque

Attached: 1231.jpg (1200x953, 165K)

>>>/rym/

I get that people like this cultureless yank's babyvoice to jerk off to, but why pretend it's good music?

Whats wrong with a music rating site? I'm sure a lot of your favourite albums are on there too

People like different things I guess

they voted the Weyes Blood album to #1 of 2019 BEFORE it was even out, based completely on a low quality leak

Take the stick out of your ass. Several musicians write better stuff than things that are discussed daily here.

Well if that's what rym users want then whatever. You don't have to let it effect what you think of the actual album

Divers is the most accessible though

joannanewsombookclub.tumblr.com/post/151842278362/4-joanna-newsoms-albums-as-a-joycean-tetralogy

The link kind of breaks down at Divers/FW, as Divers is her most accessible, and FW is the polar opposite. She literally quotes from the ending of FW though, so that's pretty obvious.

That's not what I said at all

You are completely deluded the best musician doesn't even come close to the worst musician

gay as hell

good post

PHIL ANSELMO'S LYRICS ARE OBJECTIVELY THE BEST LYRICS.

>you bleeding heart,
>but kill me first
>before it starts,
>yes my cock is getting hard,
>we are born different after all

>I'm shedding skin, changing within, I'm falling in.
>Through swollen eyes, I dreamed you died, caught inside.
>I'm shedding skin, spreading thin, severed stem.
>I created the end, I'm killing a friend. I'm shedding my skin.

>It's storming broken glass, corpses left in piles
>Ungracious bludgeonmnet that breaks the earth for miles

How does Joanna even compare? Loolee i paint cloudy teehee on the windowsill with your lala blanket ooohh lol!!11

Thanks for the input, Reddit.

Joanna Newsom is genuinely my favourite vocalist by a mile

There’s a light in the wings
Hits the system of strings
From the side, where they swing —
See the wires, the wires, the wires
And the articulation in our elbows and knees
Makes us buckle;
And we couple in endless increase
As the audience admires
And the little white dove
Made with love, made with love;
Made with glue, and a glove, and some pliers
Swings a low sickle arc, from its perch in the dark:
Settle down, settle down, my desire

And the moment I slept
I was swept up in a terrible tremor
Though no longer bereft
How I shook! And I couldn't remember
And then the furthermost shake drove a murthering stake in
And cleft me right down through my center
And I shouldn't say so
But I knew that it was then, or never

Attached: 72708285-4D19-4617-95AC-884E6B727F9B.jpg (900x719, 143K)

And then the slow lip of fire moves
Across the prairie with precision
While, somewhere, with your pliers and glue
You make your first incision
And in a moment of almost-unbearable vision
Doubled over with the hunger of lions
Hold me close, cooed the dove
Who was stuffed, now, with sawdust and diamonds

How has nobody mentioned that she was in Inherent Vice

Until the night is over
Hold on!
Hold on!
Hold your horses back from the fickle dawn
I have got some business out at the edge of town
Candy weighing both of my pockets down
'Til I can hardly stay afloat, from the weight of them
And knowing how the common-folk condemn
What it is I do, to you, to keep you warm
Being a woman, being a woman
But always up the mountainside you're clambering
Groping blindly, hungry for anything
Picking through your pocket linings, well, what is this?
Scrap of sassafras, eh Sisyphus?
I see the blossoms broke and wet after the rain
Little sister, he will be back again
I have washed a thousand spiders down the drain
Spiders ghosts hang soaked and dangelin'
Silently from all the blooming cherry trees
In tiny nooses, safe from everyone
Nothing but a nuisance gone now, dead and done
Be a woman, be a woman
I got you fren

BRB posting superior lyricist

Thick as Thieves

Remember how it all began, the apple and the fall of man? (Adam and Eve)

The price we paid, so the people say.
(Author doesn't buy it)

Down a path of shame it led us; dared to bite the hand that fed us.
(G*d supposedly gave us all but man dared to defy him; also refers to forbidden fruit)

The fairy tale, the moral end,
(again author's skepticism)

the wheel of fortune never turns again.
(Bible says we'll never have that chance again)

The worst of it has come and gone in the chaos of millennium, in the falling out of the doomsday crowd. Their last retreat is moving slow; they burn their bridges as they go.

The heretic will try to teach the harlot’s child to smile.

(Not sure on this one. Heretic = one who does not buy religion. Also prose)

Wracked again by indecision, should we make that small incision and testify to the bleeding heart inside? We cut, we scratched, we rent, we slashed and when he opened up at last—found a cul-de-sac, deep and black, of smoke and ash.

(bleeding heart = A term, usually critical and politically loaded, for someone who is held to be overly sympathetic to another person's (or group of people's) plight. Someone who is emotionally concerned about a person, idea, or event but still refuses to act. i think maybe she's saying we ready to show everyone we are this "bleeding heart" type)

(i think we know "cul-de-sac as a dead-end road, but it also means the bottom of a bag or an opening or hole. when i looked it up though i found it interesting that another defenition is: any situation in which further progress is impossible. In anatomy it can mean a a saclike cavity, open only at one end.

The wicked king of parody
(God)

is kissing all his enemies on the seventh day of the seventh week.

(refers to Christian Premillennialism and the beliefe that: in the apocalypse, weeks 1-7 retell the biblical history from the creation of humanity to the author’s time of writing (possibly during the Maccabean crisis). However, after the seventh "week", the temporary earthly messianic age begins and occurs for a period of three more “weeks”. After the temporary messianic kingdom, the creation of the new heavens and the new earth occurs.)

The tyrant’s voice is softer now but just for one forgiving hour before the rise of his iron fist again.

(The apocryphal book was apparently an attempt to explain the difficulties associated with the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple to the Jewish people.During one of the visions in the book, Ezra received a revelation from the angel Uriel. The angel explained that prior to the last judgment, the Messiah will come and establish a temporary kingdom lasting 400 years after which all of creation will be obliterated including the Messiah. The Author in this song is perhaps refering to this 400 year period as the "forgiving hour" afterwhich he will rise his "iron fist" and begin destroying all.

I’ve come tonight; I’ve come to know the way we are, see the way we’ll go. I’ve come to measure this, the width of the wide abyss.
(i think she's saying we should take things with a grain of salt as they say and not jump onto every bandwagon that comes along)

I come to you in restless sleep where all your dreams turn bittersweet with voodoo doll philosophies and day-glo holy trinities.

(I believe she is saying we're filled with beliefs which aren't backed by reality)

The crooked raft that leaves the shore ferries drunken souls aboard.
(?? crooked raft would suggest a dangerous trip ahead or ill-planned perhaps for "drunken souls" which may mean the souls (us) are not in our right minds or mislead)
Pilgrims march to Compestela,
(Compestella = ancient Campus Stellae, Eng Compostella 42°52N 8°37W, pop (2000e) 106 000. City in La Coruña province, Galicia, NW Spain, on R Sar; former capital of the Kingdom of Galicia; world-famous place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages (shrine of St James))

visions of their saint in yellow.
(St. James shrine located there)

All follow, deep in trance, all lost in a catatonic dance.

(deliberate movements but without thought; robotic)

Know no future, damn the past: blind, warm, ecstatic, safe at last.
('Ignorance is bliss', to put it quite plainly)

(2/2) the song name is thick as thieves

There are a million rap verses more lyrical than this shit.

what the fuck does this mean

They are pretty cool. One of their songs has a reference to Nick Land unless I am mistaken

bump

It is but you're just bad at introspecting

Down in the green hay,
where monkey and bear usually lay,
they woke from a stable-boy’s cry.
He said: “someone come quick —
the horses got loose, got grass-sick —
they’ll founder! Fain, they’ll die.”

The cloak and dagger dangles
Madams light the candles
In ceremonies of the horsemen
Even the pawn must hold a grudge
Statues made of matchsticks
Crumble into one another
My love winks she does not bother
She knows too much to argue or to judge

Vapid comparison, isn't it?

Rap isn't bad /pol/ immigrant

Movie soundtracks can go on their own but have real significance only in the context of the movie they're in.
Lyrics lose their value considerably without the music, again... it's not worth it reading them on they're own.
If you couldn't listen to the music uou wouldn't bother reading them.

I see how you are getting confused after all it's a similar medium and they share their roots but they're separated.

Form your own opinion, retard. Do you like one better than the other? Great, or do you need to be told which one is "better". Jesus.
He's clearly posting two things thought to be some of their best.

It's pretty commercialized and formulated. If Adorno was alive today it would be his main targer

Individualism is dumb. Tell me what the big Other thinks
