People just really, really enjoy the idea of Sonic having a family. It's why so many people like Jules and Bernadette or why the Wachowskis are so beloved even beyond letting Knuckles and Tails be actual characters with proper interactions.

Note that they almost ALWAYS divorce the Underground trio from the rest of Underground. Because people like the cast, not the show itself.
