Up until around 2014 youtube paid by number of clicks, but then sluts known as "reply girls" would make a 30 second vid of themselves in bras without any content and reply to every major video, which would lead to them getting clicks and recommended to everyone even if you weren't a horny 13yo your recommended vids would all be more 30 second vids of sluts in bras replying to vids that you haven't even seen yet. Instead of just disabling this and banning the sluts youtube changed it's whole process of payment for ads and algorithm to a new model of time watched, instead of clicks. This meant that content like animated 3-5 minute videos that take months of time to create now made 0.001% of what they used to earn, since it now favored 20 minute let's plays that could be made in day instead. The old editor and former animator from game grumps made a vid on it but I can't remember what it was called. It explains it better than I did.

That's not going to happen, but I wouldn't say animation in it's current state is bad. We still have a somewhat thriving independent animation scene, and everyone can bitch about it all they want but ultimately an original IP animation like Joel_G or Vivziepop is better than yet another newgrounds alumni's Mario swearing parody animation.

Joel_G, Vivziepop and a few others make narrative animation, if by funny skits you mean Mario but he says fuck it died out, meatcanyon is probably the only major one to still make parody vids. If you mean original skits and not parody, then yes there is channels like Piemations that still make vids.
