It's a mix of genetics and spirituality. Arguably speaking, a non-bender could have some spirit bullshit and become a bender which make it possible for his descendent to become benders without spiritual awakening.
Also Airbender were the only bender-only nation so they killed the entier population so the only way to have more benders would be for some to find the specific air nirvana again and pass it on from there.

But that doesn't really disprove bending being genetic.

It does if they are identical twins cause they are genetically almost the same, as any DNA test would tell you.

You can't force someone toward illumination. And even if you managed it, you just made an ennemie out of a guy who can raise mountains Oma and Shu style.
Also the process is probably impossible to reproduce and lost by the time of the show, just like everyone lose the art of spirit bending despite everyone being a spirit bender before bending the elements.

She gets a lot of flak for being bossy and self-righteous, but I think in most situations she was justified like Toph not being a team player.

The most unreasonable she gets is her anger with Sokka over not wanting to avenge their mother, but it starts making sense from the perspective that Katara feels partially guilty for her mother's death (being the intended target). She wants to unload some of that guilt by killing her mother's killer, and would prefer Sokka to either support her or even get angry with her instead of calm denial.

It's really vague and somewhat contradictory when it comes to how bending is passed along. It's not genetic, that much is clear. Korra made it so that random people became Airbenders when the Spirit Portals were open.
