They didn't want a white guy to be the lead. Yet they didn't bother expanding on Liu Kang and Kung Lao's roles to fill the gap. That would have felt more natural, at least. Even in the 90s movie, Johnny was more the comic relief. Liu Kang defeated the villain, and hooked up with the princess. But no. They didn't think audiences would accept badass martial artists on a mission to save the world and had to shoehorn in some weird family angle with a new OC.

Because Warner's movie division doesn't let them use Batman. If you notice a lot of these series still tease Batman as being around (I guarantee Season 1 will end with something like "Bruce isn't really dead, guys!") so people think they'll get Batman, but they never do.
