And yet the independent and foreign scene continues strong as ever. Annecy has a lot that looks really good, Ernest & Celestine guys announced a sequel film, Laika says they’re making an adult movie, cool short films releasing every month. Feels good not being interested in mainstream animation anymore, and I don’t mean this as a contrarian thing. The movies/shows have more to offer and it improves your mental health not to get caught up in the daily drama of X kids show runner vs. Y studio executive vs. Z populist awards show. I recommend more people do the same.

As I said in my post, they just announced their next movie is more adult. Promotional art has a gun and blood splatter. I guess they figured if they aren’t gonna make money pandering to the Illumination audience, might as well make whatever they want.

Its a pretty original thing to see in the movie industry, not sure if we have a precedent to compare Laika to. After Missing Link it was crickets, so I assumed they had to completely change things up, but it looks like they’re still going. They have something going on with outreach to animation schools they announced, so maybe that’s helping them stay afloat too. In any case, until the day they make a movie about a sneakers salesman, Nike funding has never had an affect on the quality or subject matter of their work.

They absolutely qualify as independent because they’re able to make more adventurous movies in a medium (stop-motion) that mainstream audiences ignore, and do not have a dedicated studio to back them. They have to go door to door asking for distribution when their latest film flops.

So history has repeated itself.

Anyone who knows anything about Youtube is aware of how batshit insane Viacom is with copyright striking. People reviewing anything under Viacom have to resort to still images because any audio or moving visual WILL get your video taken down. It's a known and popular thing to complain about in the animation reviewer community on Youtube.

Viacom destroyed many YTP channels/videos which really sucks because now if anyone talks about "classic" ytps they think of the more mainstream ones. For example, there was a channel called Marrokiu and he had some of the funniest shit out there. I cant find it but he did a ytp of the Dora the explorer Halloween episode and it was so fucking good. His wiggles ones were pretty good too. I mean, even then he was pretty popular most of the small channels that were making content like him or better had their channels and videos taken down. Look, if you can make it so you don't profit off it, cool but when you attack channels or take down videos that can really fuck people up mentally. I know this sounds like a joke, but I know from experience if you worked really hard on something just for someone tear it down or destroy it(not everyone saved their videos either, YouTube was different and a lot of people considered it to be somewhere where they could not only upload videos but could save instead of just keeping it on their desktops. I just think it's all fucked up to contain copyrighted material. Removing or taking down channels for containing a 30 second clip of a song is nazi like. Just don't allow them to profit it from that and if they do then have them pay the fine or get arrested. Or if the artist themself or whoever's property it was complains then same thing, but if no one complains and Viacom just wants to wave their flaccid 2 incher and play then nothing should happen. It's like destroying art because you drew it with Crayola crayons, like fuck off. The irony of all this is that YTPs are all over the fucking place now(not referring to the new spongebob thing) with no repercussion so I don't know where the fuck their head is at.
