Do a trade program at your local community college. They usually run a separate institution that teaches HVAC, drafting, and welding. Alternatively, do the entry level IT prep/certs (you can also pick that up yourself). You either qualify or not, with this type of work. Whereas in any university program you're always palying that interview game, to which even in-demand degrees end up dry with job opportunities.
One area that you can usually get a job in is rental cars, to pay your way through. It's kinda shitty work, but low entry to wash cars and drive. Also, they tend to promote from within, so you can even do it as a career.
