Antz usually wins in these debates because nobody feels strongly enough about A Bug's Life to defend it, while Antz is weird enough to have a few odd people champion it. Both are good movies, but despite both being near-identical on the surface, the actual movies could not be more different. I think A Bug's Life is better.

A Bug's Life is all about the plot. It's an old-fashioned Shakespearean epic about class struggles and a band of misfits saving the day. It is a very violent and edgy children's film because the life and death scenarios are treated seriously.

Antz is more about the tone and witty social commentary than having memorable story (or even characters). It's even more violent and edgy because it squarely aims for an adult audience with sexual/dark humor and pop culture references. The breakneck pace and variety of set-pieces makes it feel unpredictable where ABL is familiar. It's a much more "modern" movie.

The reason why I think ABL is the superior, and more memorable film is for three reasons.
1. I think the humor is actually better. A lot of the jokes in Antz are hilarious, but most are straight references. The war scene is a parody of live-action war films. Even Z is just a Woody Allen stand-in. Bug's Life follows the Magnificent/Seven Samurai plot and Lasseter has said a scene was inspired by Miyazaki, but these don't come across as parodies. Moments like "flaming death" and the grim ceremony welcoming the warriors are classic cartoon gags.
2. A Bug's Life has an incredible villain. Hopper is easily the most memorable character in the movie, and is one of the more intimidating Disney villains. The bad guys in Antz are utterly forgettable.
3. A Bug's Life has genuine pathos while Antz attempting to hit for the emotions always fall flat. Flik is a more likable, better developed protagonist. Randy Newman's score is on par with his Toy Story music.

Well Shrek is Dreamworks doing their own thing. There was a time where they basically just took what Pixar was doing

Antz is better because I remember SCENES from it. I remember the PLOT of A Bug's Life. But, I don't remember a single scene. I can tell you the general outline of A Bug's Life, partly because it's just The Magnificent Seven, but I cannot remember a single scene. I couldn't tell you the plot of Antz, but I could rattle off at least five scenes. Might not seem like enough, but it's more than zero.
