No Del Toro, and the studio brought in Boyega, who completely missed the appeal of the first film and thought it needed to be more like a Michael Bay Transformers flick. As result, the mechs no longer had any sense of weight and the VFX looked like shit because there was no attempt to rely on CGI-friendly lighting conditions (there's a reason why the major fights in the original happen at night).

$291M gross, and against a pre-marketing budget of roughly $140M. That's actually pretty bad. And since it made most of that money in China, where the studio cut is only 10%, it probably didn't even break even.

Is there any source that Boyega is responsible for the direction of the film? The dudes an actor not a writer or director. Not to mention its not like he has RDJ level of bankability no studio would change the direction of a movie based off what an actor of so little films says.

Boyega was a producer on the movie. As such, he was in a position to influence the direction.

And he did talk in interviews at the time about the changes in direction, I believe.

It was made. And was made by incompetent retards to boot, who managed to completely miss all the points that made the first movie good. Also Boyega.

It didn't just rip off Evangelion any more. The first one barely had anything original, but it didn't need to, because what it had was fun.
Second one wasn't fun because the characters were all shit, and having a bunch of kids running around ruins everything.
